We wake early. Most people would think that you would get to sleep in on holidays, but this is not the case when you are partnered with an energetic travel companion like I am. Tea is important, the black leaf variety, essential ritual for the start to the day. Guess what? English tea is very hard to procure in China. I am sitting in my room, looking at the view through my open window. Typing these words, I realise how lucky I am. The world really is a small place these days. We are catching a bus at 11.30 back to Guilin, than another to Yangshou. Pretty uneventful really, wrong bus caught to Guilin, than wrong ticket bought to Yangshou. Anyone who has travelled with me knows the story. It always has a happy ending. Yangshou ... read more

Guilin

Head for some breakfast near the train station, attacked by the usual hawkers, we purchase some poncho’s because it is raining at the moment. The guest house where we are staying is picking us up. So no drama with transport this time. We drive out of Guilin and head north towards Long Sheng. Our abode is at Tiantou Zu, a small village, about 100 people, nestled in the mountains. After about 2.5 hour drive we arrive after the usual ‘dodge the bus, truck, car, motorbike’ experience. The locals drive a bit crazier in the rural areas. Now the easy part – a 40 minute walk to our destination, straight up. Kathy (of course) has booked the highest accommodation on the terraces. Wish she could settle for second best sometimes. The local ladies offer to carry our ... read more

With tickets in hand and confidence at a high we catch a Taxi for Guangzhou Railway Station. The driver speaks a rudimentary form of English. He and Kathy merrily converse along the way as he weaves in and out of traffic like a hare in front of headlights. At the end neither was much the wiser but both seemed pleased with their success in Chinese and Australian diplomacy. Twenty Two Yuan for the Twenty minute ride. About Three Dollars Australian. The cheapest, cleanest and most efficient ride I have ever experienced in the world. We purchase some noodles out the front from the local vendors. Hot water is supplied in the carriages. We pass through the security with the other thousands of travellers. How any one is apprehended I don’t know, it is just a mass ... read more

Arrived at Guilin

Day one nearly over it has been a long 36 hours. Have ticked nearly all the boxes first day. Lack of sleep on night flight. Seat plus TV didn't work. The spirit of Australia Huh! Managed bus to Guangzhou pronounced Guang Joe. Managed to purchase train ticket to Guilin tommorrow. Nobody and I repeat nobody speaks english in China. The train station is more like mayhem crossed over kaos with 1000 people lined up to buy a ticket. Someone breaks from the crowd and believe it or not helps us through our dilema. Backpacking it is something you have to do before you die. I love holidys. Have included some photos from our cruise up the pearl river. Absolutely awesome.( I hate those two words) Anyway back in Asia have had the most beautiful $2 dollar ... read more
