Without much rest, Dain and I woke before sunrise to meet a group of people hiking to Glacier Torre. Our guide moved us quickly to meet Matis and Luis, who would be taking us on the Glacier for ice trekking. Now that the sun was up the snow stopped falling and the scenery was just beautiful. We crossed a fast moving, glacier fed river onto some steep terrain then over a small waterfall and back down. With the speed that Dain and I had developed from our Nalhua Huapi hiking, this group was frustrating and slow for us. We managed to make it to the Glacier and fixed on our feet a very fun set of crampons. The hiking on the Glacier was a key highlight of the trip for me. I love the crevices and ... read more

What luck we had on this bus ride. Dain completely jinxed the entire operation. As soon as he sat down on the bus he sarcastically crossed himself, by the time we were in El Bolson the bus had broke down. The passengers waited together and here we met our actuary friends from England, Chloe and Phil. As well as some students, not unlike ourselves, from California, Tasha and Morgan. While the bus was getting a belt replaced we all went out to lunch to a restaurant that serves trout ravioli and Argentinian famous ice cream! Another 6-8 hours of an unpaved road led us to the town Perito Moreno. We stayed the night here and almost missed our bus the following morning because we abandoned our pick-up point in sacrifice for some delicious pastries. After chasing ... read more

Dain lives to be 25....barely! On this day we attempted to declare ourselves a tourist day of just exploring town and relaxing, maybe go for a picnic by the lake. What it turned into was a wild goose hunt to get things booked and running errands. We were both quite tired from our day and went back to the hosteria for card games and wine. Later, when I was packing and Dain was showering, the electricity suddenly snapped off and a single, very loud swear word came from Dain. Apparently the poorly designed bathroom in this room had a metal box for the bathroom fan above the shower head. When Dain went to set his razor down on the fan it electrocuted him and shorted the lights, tv, etc. It took Dain a minute to come ... read more

By far this was the most challenging and most rewarding hike I have accomplished in my very immature trekking experience. From Lake Ilon we descened quickly back to the trail head, Pampa Linda, and took a recovery break to refill water bottles, snack on granola and get out of the sun. Before long we were heading up to the 'Cloud Pass' hike. It was more popular than the very steep Lake Ilon. At the first stopping point Dain and I were easily distracted by a nearby waterfall, (cascada.) We dropped our packs and shimmied on up to see this site. It was a fun side show, but my legs got scraped and bloodied by all the sharp vegetation overgrown onto the path. Dain tried his best to find a path to get closer and closer to ... read more

We caught a bus from Bariloche to Pampa Linda in Nahuel Huapi National Park, where we would stay for a short 2 nights and 3 days. The kind lady at the information desk helped Dain and I pick out and narrow down the hiking options. Naturally, Dain refused to believe that all the hiking in the park could not be accomplished in 3 days. Eventually, the park people convinced him it wasn´t a good idea. Already, we wished we had budgeted more time for this portion of our trip. The two hikes we completed are called Laguna Ilon and Passe de los Nubes (Cloud Pass.) The most difficult was up to Laguna Ilon. The new 35 pounds of weight on my back was, duh, surprisingly heavy. The steepness speaks for itself on any topographic map, although ... read more

A long and bumpy bus ride, that started out 3 hours late, finally dropped us off in the town of Bariloche. Both green in the face with bus sickness, Dain and I found our way to the Centro Civico of the town. In this plaza my favorite feature of the town exsits. Usually, there are several great, fluffy St. Bernard dogs sitting pretty with their puppies. Of course, the owners charge a great amount of pesos for pictures with the adorable couple and the vast Lake Nauhuel Huapi set as the background. With much resistance I did not succumb to a photo with the dogs...but I did pet them until the owners shooed me away! More great features of this town include the DELICIOUS chocolate, fondue, free music in the Plaza and in the parks and ... read more

Arriving in Buenos Aires in a timely manner with all luggage intact was success enough for us, but we also mangaged to reserve a room at the V & S Hostel by phone! The jet lag and culture shock moving from winter climate to hot and humid middle of summer climate quickly left us and we utilized our feet for a 2 day self-guided walking tour of the city. We weren´t brave enough to try the bus or subway system, but still got really far. We observed some things about the city as we adjusted to this foreign place. Shops, restaurants, cafés close for siesta or just call it a day around 3pm. The dripping ontop of our heads and shoulders is not a sprinkling of rain, but the leaking air conditioners hanging outside of windows ... read more
