Starting an adventure aboard the Black Penny leaving from Newry, Ireland sailing through Gibraltar, stopover in Malta and down through the Suez Canel, the Red Sea and hopefully to Sri Lanka

The weather, winds and sea all cooperated to get the Black Penny out to the Irish Sea and around to Kinkeel. There is quite a bit of building going on on the Ireland side as they are expanding facilities to take on large container ships. The harbor seals were bobbing up and down and fascinating to watch. When we entered the Kinkeel Harbor there were at least a dozen seals cruising for hand outs from the fishing vessels. Although I had decided that the Black Penny was not going to take me across blue water, I enjoyed the day on the water with her and wish her the best of luck (and a new owner!)... read more

Gerry is our 2nd Capt. He is 83 year old retired fishing captain, living near Kinkeel Harbor with his wife Lorraine. Thick, heavy brogue, gray beard, runny eyes and wearing "Dutchman sailor shoes" (We'd recognize them as the forefathers of Dansko clogs), he definitely is a character. A storyteller with absolutely facinating stories, I was glad to have had the pleasure of meeting him. Difficult to understand at times but sat on the bow with me as we cruised down the canal, out the lock and out into the Irish sea, he kept his hands busy repairing ropes with expert hands. From explaining, the material of the ropes to pointing out the harbor seals he was a pleasure to spend the day with. The evening before, he had agreed to accompanying us as far as Cadiz, ... read more

The highlight of my first 2 days in Newry was getting to know Bruno. He had already been in this mess for two days and although pleasant to Peter, you could see frustration there. (He was very annoyed about not being able to take a hot shower). Bruno had worked the oil fields in Eastern Africa for 10 years and had been saving for a promised trip like this for a while. He had made a lot of sacrifices at home to come and now felt lied to and manipulated. Peter babbled on and on about what a great solution Bruno had come up with for the hot water problem but when asked to find someone to re-thread a pipe, Peter couldn't produced them. We sat together until late the first night talking about what we ... read more

AWOL - The kingpin of the trip is MIA. As the first day ended and the next began, there was no signs of Tom. Peter was beginning to get frantic. Peter was late getting to the boat and when he arrived at 1pm, Bruno had jumped ship and Tom had not appeared. So we went on a Tom hunt. Peter described Tom as a hippie, flower child, wannabe recording artist in his late 50's with long gray hair. He lived on a boat in Carlington, Ireland that had been remodelled into a recording studio. We went off down the road to Carlington to try and see if Tom was on his boat. It was a great ride and there was no noticeable difference from Northern Ireland to Ireland except the signs were not in English and ... read more

What a piece of junk. That was all I could think of. The boat had potential but other than the obvious need of cleaning, paint and varnish, it was a mess with junk. Scraps of wood, cans of paint, coils of wires, junk, junk, junk everywhere. I was speakless. Peter introduced me to Bruno and took us across the street to the Quayside Mall for lunch. I had soup as I had lost my appetite. Peter was babbling on to Bruno about getting the hot water repaired and talking about getting the boat up the coast to the Kilkeer Harbor to have the drive shaft repaired. Bruno was concerned that the departure date was pushed back too far. He had landed in Dublin and didn't realize that he needed a visa to come into the United ... read more

The trip was off to a fairly dull start as the original plane had to be left in Newark do to a "check engine light" on that they couldn't determine the cause. It was obviously electrical as we sat on the plane for two hours with the light and air going on and off but finally de-planed waited another 2 hours and set off across the Atlantic to Belfast, only 3 hours late. I was greeted with special name sign by the Director of this cruise (I will not refer to him as Captain as later blogs will explain). Cheery sort of chap, very gregarious and excited to "get on our way". But.....first the good and the bad news....the bad news was that one of the drive shafts had over heated on the sea trial and ... read more
