La Trois Roses - La Petite Pierre After last nights escapades, it was time for a quieter day! However, I bought a wireless mouse yesterday in the supermarket, and when I opened it, it had obviously been used and returned as damaged, as it certainly didn't work. Therefore after breakfast we had to return to the shop to exchange it, plus find a garage who might be able to replace both dipped headlights. The supermarket was relatively easy to sort out, I had practiced what I needed to say and managed to exchange the mouse. Fortunately the guy who came to speak to me, spoke good English so in addition, I was able to explain the problem. As for the garage, I had tried to get replacement bulbs in the supermarket, which they had, but trying ... read more

La Trois Roses - La Petite Pierre After sleeping in, it was up for breakfast and way. Today we have been to Colmar to complete a visit started back in 2002, when it was suggested we visit the Unterlinden Museum, sadly on that occasion it was shut for renovation. This time it was open and had some superb medieval exhibits including the Issenheim Altar by Grűnwald, a truly stupendous piece of work. The rest of the day was spent in Colmar, looking around the old part of the town, doing some shopping and having a great day. Lunch was taken in a small restaurant, sitting outside, eating some very nice food and generally ‘people’ watching. A fascinating hour. On the way back we popped into a supermarket and purchased some wine and various other bits. On ... read more

Enroute - Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Germany, France Well we crept away from Breg at about 03:10 this morning and headed to the motorway at Udine in Italy, then into Austria, Germany and finally France. The journey was relatively uneventful, the heating started to go after about 2 hours of driving (a sign before that the water was about to run out), however the water level was all right and after a 30 min break the heating resumed. We therefore stopped every 150 miles or so from then on to have a half hour break and to check the water. We arrived in La Petite Pierre about 15:30 and booked into a very nice country hotel in the centre of the village. We have good room with a balcony overlooking a wooded valley, where the leaves are ... read more

T K Breg - Brda Hills Last day here in Breg and the Brda Hills, so not too much travelling today. After a leisurely breakfast, one egg appeared this morning, so we left it for Saška and Annabel to have; we went for a drive around the various little villages nearby. The weather was perfect, not to hot, but beautiful sun and clear blue skies. The harvest is still going strong, with all the little tractors trundling along with the trailers full of grapes. We ended up in the town of Dobrovo, which has a castle and in the basement a wine cellar, with tasting. I went a little mad, and have ended up with 18 bottles of very nice red and white wine; I just hope they taste as good when we get them home! ... read more

T K Breg - Brda Hills No eggs for breakfast, which was a bit strange, however we made ourselves bread and pršut and copious amounts of tea and coffee. We resorted to boiling our little kettle upstairs on top of a wood burning stove (not lighted) using the portable gas stove, as sadly, the electric hob takes an age to boil anything. When Saška arrived, we learnt that the chickens had gone off the lay, as the weather had turned cold. After another long chat, we decided to go to Postojnska Jama (Postojna Caves) and then see what happened after that. The trip there was not too stressful baring the fact that the SatNav decided to route us via a motorway, which we didn’t realise until we were on it. So a quick stop at the ... read more

T K Breg - Brda Hills The day started slightly overcast but bright, with the promise of sun later. Breakfast was delivered to the downstairs kitchen at 8am. We are sharing the kitchen with a lovely lady called Saška, who is a chemist/pharmacist and director of a company manufacturing and exporting herbal products. She lives in Portoro, right down in the south west of Slovenia, on the Istrian peninsula. She’s in the middle of a week’s holiday, with her black American Spaniel, Annabel, who is about 6 months old. Her English is good and we had a long conversation on what she did, the state of Slovenia at present etc. It was really interesting, her family have two farms/small holding, where they have olive trees, which they harvest in Nov/Dec and they’ve won prizes for its ... read more

T K Breg - Brda Hills We had supper last night back in Breg, it was very good. We had the normal soup, followed by a vegetable lasagne and then homemade raspberry ice-cream and a ‘cake’, which was also very good. Breakfast this morning we took at the vineyard, it was offered in Breg but it was a bit of a trek to go back. We felt s little uncomfortable, as it was quite a posh venue, with a number of ‘painted’ Italian ladies and their gentlemen! Having just spent the last week on a proper working farm, it was a bit of a shock. Breakfast was typically continental and substantial, but for €14 each, it needed to be. On checking out, the receptionist encouraged us to return and gave us price lists etc, but I ... read more

Enroute Logarska Dolina - Breg, Brda Got up early and packed before breakfast. Breakfast was as normal. I managed to ask whether I could buy some elodec and how much, somehow I managed to purchase one at 600gm and a 1.5kg, they are vacuum packed and frozen, so I’m hoping they’ll make it back to UK. I’ll have to find somewhere cool to store them whilst further south. After saying our farewell’s, we headed towards Austria and after a really exciting uphill climb, Jeremy Clarkson would have been proud, we re-entered Slovenia and headed downhill towards Kranj and then Bled. We put in the SatNav not to go on motorways or toll roads, as you now have to buy a Vignette to travel on the major motorways in Slovenia. The outcome was to take us through ... read more

Logarska Dolina - T K Perk Today started slightly overcast, but looked as if it might clear up later on. At breakfast we said goodbye to Stephanie, Daniel and Gabriela, who were flying back to Stanstead this afternoon and thence onwards to Shrewsbury. With the mist beginning to clear we set out for our expedition to Matkov Kot Škaf. The walk for the first two hours is basically all downhill on forestry tracks. We met the farmer from Matk, this time he was herding a flock of sheep from a lower pasture up to the fields around his farm. This time we were able to wish him ‘good day’, which seemed to please. We passed yet another farm on our journey downhill and finally made it to the valley bottom and the dried out riverbed. There ... read more

Logarska Dolina - T K Perk Awoke really early and struggled to go back to sleep, Clare also couldn’t sleep, and decided to turn the bathroom light on so she could read a book, the only problem was that she had to round the wrong way in bed so she could get the light. All this meant, when I did wake, I was welcomed with a pair of feet! Apparently she did this so she wouldn’t waken me! This morning was somewhat overcast and misty. The original plan had been to walk up Matkov Kot to Matkov škaf, which is a snow tub, not totally sure what one of these is, but it all revolves around snow melt water scouring out a hole which can measure 20m x 20m. However we shall not find out today ... read more
