Europe September 22nd 2008

This morning we took a water taxi to the monastery located on an island just off Punat, We had to wait for the return and the skipper coaxed us into drinking some of the local firewater! The monastery dates back to the 12th century. It is currently habitated by the Franciscan monks. We then went to the town of Krk - a fishing seaport with lots of tourists. Dates back to Roman days and also is a medieval walled town. Wandered through the streets which had the usual tourist souvenir shops and had coffee at an outdoor cafe on the water. Tomorrow we are off to Zadar on the Dalmation Coast.... read more

Travelled from Ljubljana to Rijeka. Rijeka is a very old port town close to the border with Slovenia. Experienced a market and saw a few older buildings. Scenery became very interesting after Rijeka. Villages on the sea and the hillsides. Our destination is Punat today which is partway down the coast of Croatia on KrK island. The hotel dates back to the 1850's and was once a Bishop's residence and has been converted to a very nice hotel with restaurant. It is walking distance to the village which is a destination point for people with yachts. There were at least 500 berths in the Marina by the hotel. We visited the town of Vrbnik which was very old and picturesque. Built on a hillside with narrow walkways leading to an old church. Stopped for a glass ... read more

Europe » Slovenia September 20th 2008

Arrived yesterday pm without any complications. However, to drive on their main roads you have to buy a 6 month sticker (about $60). Staying at a large Casino Hotel. Took the shuttle into town center for a short walk around and dinner at a suggested restaurant in the old town. Walked along the river. Seems we have hit festival days with street musicians, etc. Very picturesque. Today we went back into town for the open air market along the river and then climbed to the castle. Did some more walking around town and walked back to the hotel - about 4 K. City is a combination of old and new because some was destroyed in previous wars. People seem relaxed and friendly and speak English as a second language. Supposedly the avergae Slovenian lives in a ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Transdanubia » Lake Balaton September 18th 2008

This posting is a day late due to technical difficulties which were solved by a friendly computer store which restored my Windows. Today we drove from Budapest to Heviz which is a resort town on Lake Balaton. There is a 4 hectare hot spring/lake and Europeans travel here for therapeutic reasons. Very picturesque town but still lots of tourists even though the temperature continues to be cool. Hotel is very nice with a view of the valley and easy walking distance to local sights. Had dinner at a restaurant complete with Hungarian musicians and dancers. Tomorrow we travel to Ljubljana in Slovenia. Drivers here are VERY aggressive. Not that unusual to be passed by vehicles travelling at 200kph estimated.... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest » Buda September 17th 2008

The weather is again cool. Apparently record setting for here at this time. At least there was no rain. We walked from the hotel over the chain bridge (the suspension links look like a bicycle chain) and then walked up to the castle and the village which is located at the top and guess what we found - a Hilton Hotel. We watched the changing of the guard at what we think was the Imperial residence. We then walked back over the bridge to Pest and the hotel. There are so many wonderful old buildings just waiting to be renovated which is a major challenge since most of them have walls 1 - 2 feet thick. One of the pictures shows the same building structure part of which has beeen renovated and is very nice. There ... read more

Budapest is a city of contrasts. There are many grand old buildings. Some of them are in very nice condition. Others are in a state of disrepair. The size and grandeur of the buildings is awesome. We spent the entire day walking through Pest seeing old buildings, a large market, and the Holocaust Museum. We have enjoyed some of the typical Hungarian cuisine. The day has been overcast with a little rain at times but the temperature is definitely cooler. Tomorrow we will visit Buda which is on the other side of the river where the castle is located.... read more

The GPS got us from Prague to Telc accurately. We had to purchase a sticker to drive on the autoroutes which do not have speed limits. Weather has turned cold and rainy. What happened to summer? We bought a scarf and fleece. Telc is a magical Medieval town with a well preserved castle. The pension is very nice and is located on the village square. Our room is again on the top! floor. We are getting used to carrying luggage - no elevator. Had french onion soup imitation - they use garlic instead of onion - very good. Did a castle tour - guide only spoke Czech but had an English handout. Tomorrow we probably drive through Austria to get to Budapest where we have a room booked at a downtown 4 star hotel whatever that ... read more

Long Day. Hiked up the hill through the Little Quarter to the castle and cathedral. The castle is in fact a town in itself dating back to prior to 1300. It is reputed to be the largest castle in Europe. Crowds of tourists and tour groups are oppressive. People everywhere. Walked across the Charles Bridge the oldest bridge in Prague with towers at either end. Most streets and sidewalks are cobblestone. Weather has been good but cooler today. Feels like fall. Tomorrow we start to head south to Telc another UNESCO heritage sight.... read more

Spent the day sightseeing. The hotel is 10 minutes and 5 underground stops to the center off town. Saw the old Jewish Quarter, Old Town and New Town. Lots of wonderful old buidings and wall to wall tourists. Lots of outdoor cafes. Cars and people share the streets. Amazing people don't get run over. Weather has been suny and overcast but still quite pleasant. Most impressed with the architecture and amazing condition of many of the old buildings. Lot of places do not take credit cards. Went into sn ultra modern shopping mall contained with the old Palladium building. Tomorrow the castle.... read more

Only took us 5 hours to find the hotel. Driving in Prague is an experience ............. Will be sight seeing for the net two days or more. Ate at a very nice Italian restaurant. Smoking is definitely not frowned upon here, Cough - cough. Traffic in Prague beats Montreal or wherever. Try driving withoout signs and even those you find you can't read and the GPS sucks. Took us way out of town had to buy paper maps to ffind hotel. Few people speak English so it is definitely as foreign country. Lots to laugh about if we survive, tomorrow the subway or trams if pickpockets don't get us first. Attached photo is the hotel - 4 floors walkup no elevator and metro goes past window. ? stars. Tomorrow should be saner. The car is in ... read more
