CABTATW Vol.II - Europe

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence July 29th 2010

We awoke a little later than we would have liked at 7:50, as we had to checkout of one hostel and into another. We dumped our bags and went to Cafe Degli Innocate where we got a small sandwich, pastry, coffee and orange juice for only 3.80 - an orange juice alone should have cost us 4 Euro. We then headed straight for Santa Maria Del Fiore (The Duomo) as we expected queues, and got there at 9:35 where we got in line and waited 25 minutes for it to open. We had no idea of the enterance fee but predicted between 15-20 Euro for both of us. As it turned out it was free, which was brilliant, but we were met by a man who seemed to regard Clare as some form of prostitute as ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Siena July 28th 2010

After waking up at about 09:00 and having two cups of coffee, we headed down the street to a small cafe on the corner of Via Nazionale and had croissants filled with what appeared to be marmalade, and another coffee. Refreshed, we then headed for Santa Maria Novella station and checked the departures board for the next train to Siena - 11:10. It was 10:55 and we were never going to make it in that queue and we weren't sure if we needed reservations or not. I suspected not as it would be a regional train to Siena, but just in case, Clare took her position in the queue and i dashed over to the platform to find out if our interrail passes would cover us. A nice Italian chap replied in the affirmative and i ... read more

We arrived at Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station at 06:18 to good solid Italian sunshine, after trying to sleep through a horrendous thunder storm all night. Clare got pretty scared at one point as she thought the lightning hit the train but I was far too drowsy and oblivious to notice. We grabbed a map and instantly headed for the hostel, negotiating our way through the narrow streets and early morning traffic. We waited an age to get into the building and then another to get into the hostel, only to be told that we would have to relocate to a different building. When we found this one we were told our room wasn't yet ready and that we would have to come back at 14:00 - the notion of spending an entire morning in ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich July 25th 2010

We awoke to disappointment yet again this morning as there were no croissants or pastries but on our way to the station we finally got our hands on some Belgian chocolate, which was delightful. We got our tickets to Munich and had to make two changes at Brussels and Frankfurt, where we got on our first ICE train, which despite German notority for precision, got us into Munich a whole twenty three minutes late. All in all the days travelling would consume almost ten hours, the greatest entertainment during which came from when I made Clare try a Snickers that she said she wouldnt like but I thought she would and she almost threw up - we didnt arrive in Munich until 19:23. Once we were settled in our fairly nice room in what was mostly ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Antwerp Province » Antwerp July 22nd 2010

Today got off to a slightly disappointing start as there were no croissants or pastries for breakfast! Things perked up, however, as we walked along the riverside to the train station, bound for Antwerp. As we neared the station Clare decided we were in the wrong place but I disagreed - it turned out I was right. However, my victory was short lived when I realised that the Interrail tickets required to get reduced reservation fees (or even fares free of charge) were not in my bag and I had left them back at the Hostel...1-1. Instead of trapesing all the way back to the Bauhaus we reluctantly forked out the 30 Euro charge for two returns, paid the grumpy man, and continued with a large dint in our daily budget. After leaving the very grand ... read more

On the train to London after Clare's graduation we immediately ran into a spot of bother. Some lunatic had pinched our seat and showed us a ticket that should have seen him on the 07:07 train from Edinburgh to Peterborough. Clare stood her ground and the crettin eventually moved, having apparently refused to do so when asked by a Chinese couple earlier on. The trip got more eventfull when a smelly Yorkshireman got on at York with two turtles no less, which he popped on the table infront of me. We arrived at Kings Cross and headed across the road to St. Pancras where we waited in utter discomfort for five hours until we were able to get on the Eurostar to Paris. On arrival we crossed the road from Gare du Nord to McDonalds and ... read more
