I think my favorite part of this leg of the journey was Orvieto given that I had already been to Rome. Orvieto is a small village on a hilltop in Umbria. You have to take a tram up to get there and then you still have to walk up a hill in order to get to the top. From the top you can see a great view of the countryside and further down, you can stand along an old fortress to get another view. We walked up to the top to see the view and get a little information about the village from Dan (our tour guide's name) before we dispersed and wandered around. We walked downhill which was lined with shops and restaurants and cute alleyways with plants dangling from the balconies. We windowshopped and ... read more

Onwards to Florence! Again, the view was pretty scenic as we travelled through the Italian countryside (we went through Tuscany at one point but I can't remember if it was to Florence or from Florence or both). Appropriately, we watched Eurotrip on the way and it was cool to see all those places and realize we were going to most of them if we had not already been. The first stop was Pisa where we could fulfill our tourist dreams of posing next to the tower as if we were trying to hold it up (for FB users, see profile pic). Then we continued on to Florence and got there in the evening. We had lasagna for dinner and then partied the night away. What was really cool about the hostel was that we could go ... read more

Europe » Switzerland April 16th 2011

We left Paris early the next day to head to the Swiss Alps. As you can imagine, it was a pretty scenic ride which made the length of it more bareable. We arrived at our campsite in the evening. I say campsite but we had cabins with electricity and heating and so forth. The only inconvenience was that we had to walk to the communal bathrooms. We were staying in a tiny town called Lauterbrunnen, a town that made Geneseo look like a city. It was a pretty adorable place though with mountains all around it and waterfalls that you could spot from main street. We had a traditional Swiss dinner, with cheese fondu as our appetizer and sausage (which was surprisingly good given that I don't usually like it) as our main course. Given that ... read more

Onwards to the Continent! On day 1 of the trip, I woke up super early to meet my fellow tour members downstairs for breakfast. We then boarded a bus to Dover where we said goodbye to the famous white cliffs and sailed across the channel to Calais, France where we took another bus to Paris. It was pretty exhausting but we were rewarded that evening with a delicious inclusive dinner at which I tried escargot for the first time and discovered that it was actually quite tasty. Dinner was followed up by a night tour around the "city of lights." We saw the Moulin Rouge building and famous sites such as the Louve and the Arc de la concorde and of course the Eiffel Tower! Our tour guide continuously proved to us, not only that night ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » London April 15th 2011

I guess now is a good a time as any to start blogging about my epic trip. For those of you who do not have facebook, you will have to wait until the next time you see me to see the pics (or ask for a cd or something). There are just too many (2000 to be exact) and this website is not exactly user-friendly when it comes to pictures. So London... As you may or may not know, I did London in two parts-before and after the trip. I'm going to go a little out of order here and write about both parts in one entry. I took the overnight bus from Edinburgh on the night of March 24th and actually managed to sleep a good amount considering. After dropping my luggage (which consisted of ... read more

I am basically writing this to say I won't be writing for at least 3 weeks. I leave for my spring break trip tomorrow night. I haven't been posting recently because I was buried in three 10-page papers and an oral presentation from the beginning of March till Monday. Because of this, I also haven't really done much in terms of exploring Scotland :( It's been a pretty sucky month but at least the last few days of it will be good. I did go out for St. Patty's day and that was a blast! I went to an Irish bar and danced to some live Irish music (as well as Sweet Home Alabama, don't ask me how that happened) then went to the bar at the student union (tried my first tequilla shot, not as ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome March 1st 2011

This weekend I accomplished my dream of going to Italy...Well, I won't consider the goal fully accomplished until I see Florence and Venice etc. over spring break. Friday, I landed in Rome around 9:00 Italy time and took a bus to the Freedom Traveller's hostel. If anyone is planning on going to Italy and doesn't want to pay a fortune for a hotel room, I highly recommend going there. The next day, I met up with Marissa and her friend Liz at breakfast. We found Jill, who was staying at another hostel close by. She was chilling on our hostel's computer, apparently sneaking the free wi-fi. For anyone who is confused at how I know these people and how we ended up in Europe at the same time, Marissa and Jill went on the Mississippi trip ... read more

If anyone is keeping track of my life, you will know that I just came back from a 3-day Highlands trip with some friends yesterday night. And it was AWESOME. So taking it from the top... Friday, I had to wake up super early to meet at the Haggis Adventures office. Given that I'm pretty sure I have bronchitis, I only got like three hours of sleep since the coughing kept me up. Stupid. Of course, I had to be sick for this trip and probably for Rome next weekend (meeting a couple people from my Mississippi trip which I was also sick for. There's a theme here). But okay, now that I got the venting out of the way....From the very beginning, our tour guide, Tony, was hilarious. Throughout the trip, he was very informative ... read more

I went underground Wednesday to see what people lived like in the 17th century. Now before y'all start jumping to conclusions, let me just clarify. No, they did not live underground. Yeah, I was disappointed too. They lived in narrow closings with really tall buildings to fit the overcrowding population. Eventually, the city built over the ground floor of the closes and they were forgotten for years until they were uncovered again in the 20th century and one was eventually made into a tourist attraction called the Mary King's close (she lived in the close). Although the closes were open to the skies way back when, the really tall buildings prevented the majority of sunlight from reaching the ground floor, so the dim lighting inside the current underground close is a pretty accurate representation of what ... read more

So Sunday, I had my first pub quiz experience. It was just me and Ada on a team and we lost...badly. But hey, it was hard! Especially when some of the questions were British knowledge. Anyway, t'was fun. Tuesday, we went to the Burns Supper and it was set up all nice and fancy. There was a band playing traditional Scottish music and a bag-piper. Haggis, tats, and neeps were served for dinner and cranachan (berries and creme) with a little short cake for dessert. (side note: I promised myself I wouldn't look up what haggis was until I left Scotland but a couple days ago, Colleen decided that instead of just asking me whether I had haggis or not, she should post a wikipedia link on my facebook wall with a description of what haggis ... read more
