After Ireland, we flew to Scotland and I showed my parents and sister around Edinburgh for a day and went to the castle again. The next day, we drove to Inverness, stopping at Cawdor Castle along the way. After Inverness, we drove through the Highlands, stopping at Loch Ness and Eileen Donan castle before crossing over to the Isle of Skye. I had travelled a similar route on my Highlands tour but I saw a lot that I didn’t see last time and also didn’t see stuff I did see last time so it was good I did both. As I explained last time I want to the Highlands, there is breathtaking landscape of towering mountains, often over lakes or the ocean. Waterfalls can be spotted throughout the Highlands, even as you drive along the road. ... read more

Europe » Ireland June 12th 2011

This was Ireland in a nutshell: Kilkenny->Rock of Cashel->Ring of Kerry->Dingle Penninsula->Cliffs of Moher->Dublin After meeting my parents at the airport, we went to Kilkenny where we saw a castle. Rock of Cashel is the sight of the earliest church and monastery, set up high on a rock. Ring of Kerry is basically a loop of really scenic sights. The general scenery in Ireland is green cliffs and hills towering over an ocean that is as blue and clear as the Caribbean. We were in rural Ireland so we saw a lot of sheeps and cows and stone walls marking agricultural plots. We also saw stone forts from the Bronze and Iron age (BC and early AD), and were able to climb atop them since there were impressively built stairs all the way up to the ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Midlothian » Edinburgh May 25th 2011

This will be my last entry before I leave for my two-week Ireland/Scotland trip before returning home on June 11th. Last Friday, I went on a Literary Pub Tour. The tour consisted of two actor/tour guides arguing back and forth over what Edinburgh's literary world had been about: Enlightenment/academia vs saloons, drinking, sex and the life of the common man. In the end, it was decided that it was both. Honestly, I was a little disappointed by this tour. It didn't tell me anything I hadn't already gathered by living here these past few months. For tourists who are having a short visit, it's a good idea but it really didn't go too much in depth with information. This past Friday, after I finished my last test (!), I went to the People's Museum which displays ... read more

Last week, I took a bus to Cramond, a small seaside village on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The area by the harbor extends into a park. On one end, you can walk along the sea and see the boats while grabbing some homemade ice cream, and on the other you can walk along the river through woods and greenery to see a waterfall. I did both. It was nice to be outside of the city and near the ocean once again on such a beautiful day. What is unique about Cramond is its tidal island. When the tide is out, you can walk from the village to the small uninhabited island. I decided to wait for the tide to turn and was lucky because I was able to cross an hour before the posted time, though ... read more

Last week, I hiked Arthur’s Seat as well as various other hill/rock formation things in Holyrood Park which begins at the foot of the palace. The rock formation on Arthur’s Seat is from the same volcano as the one the castle sits on. From the top of the hill and from the other hills I climbed, you can see a panoramic view of the city and a bit of the ocean. I say hill, but they are each pretty steep and large. Arthur’s Seat takes around 45 minutes to climb. The park was nice because you are surrounded by hilly greenery and flowers. It is sort of like the Highlands of Edinburgh (a very small version of the Highlands). Last weekend, there was a Celidh street festival. It was under a tent with Celtic and Scotland ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam April 19th 2011

Right outside Amsterdam, we stopped at a farm that made both cheese and clogs. We were given demonstrations on how to make both and then were given different types of cheese to taste. Afterwards, we relaxed a bit with the cows and the dog outside before heading in to the city (and also stopping at a windmill tuned into a house). That night, we wandered through the Red Light District. For those of you who don't know, prostitution is legal in the Netherlands. The Red Light District is where prostitutes stand in the window to solicit themselves. If the red light is on, it means she is available. If it is off, it means she occupied. They are allowed to negotiate with the men (or sometimes women) on the price and adjust it for each person. ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin April 19th 2011

On our way to Berlin, we stopped at the old Saxony capital of Dresden for lunch. Dresden was greatly impacted by the WWII bombing...Uh, there's not much to say about it besides old. So yeah, moving right along... Dan gave us a driving tour of Berlin. We saw the Soviet memorial, the Holocaust memorial, the Reichstag, the Bradensburg gate, and of course the Berlin Wall and more. We saw the mural part of the wall as well as the part that is less well-perserved and gives you an idea of what it looked like way back when. There are holes in it as a result of people chipping away at it when it was announced that it would come down. For the sake of preservation, a wired gate was put around it to prevent people from ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague April 18th 2011

As mentioned in my last entry, I really loved Prague! It wins the award of "cities that I knew nothing about beforehand but fell in love with immediately upon arrival" category. We arrived there in the late afternoon and were given a walking tour. The city has so many cool quirks. For example, on the hour, the figures of the clock tower move. There are also interesting statues such as two men peeing into a tub of water, and there is a super narrow alleyway that requires a traffic light for one-way-at-a-time walking. On the most famous bridge of the city, there is an engraving of a knight (or soldier?) petting a dog. It goes along with a story that is at least partially true. I have forgotten the names of the characters so I will ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg April 18th 2011

Salzburg was the low part of my journey. After over a week of long days and being sleep deprived, I was starting to feel sick. On the way to Salzburg, I was trying hard to not throw up. Originally, I was going to do the optional driving Sound of Music tour (Salzburg was the setting for the movie) but I had to cancel since the bus on the way over was adding to my nausea due to motion sickness and continuing on a bus for the rest of the day didn't sound appealing. In the end, it was a good thing I canceled because the ones who went on the tour had a horrible time because the guide was awful so I ended up saving money and time by not going. I felt okay enough to ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 17th 2011

On the way to Venice, we stopped at Verona to see Juliet's balcony. There is a rumor that "Juliet" (there's a legend of a real Romeo and Juliet that inspired the story) lived in that house and in the 1930s, a balcony was built to satisfy tourist needs. It also may have been the basis for the balcony in the 1930s movie (or maybe the other way around). In any case, the balcony overlooks a tiny courtyard and there is a statue of Juliet beneath it. Somehow, it become a tradition to rub the breast of Juliet's statue because it would give you good luck in your love life. As a result, the said breast has become a different color from the rest of her body. We all took turns rubbing it and taking pictures. Dan ... read more
