After our trip to Hue we took a morning bus down to Hoi An. It wasn't the comfy sleeper bus but it was a comfortable ride for $5. We were again dropped at a nice little guesthouse and we agreed on a room for about $18 that included a breakfast the next morning. We dropped our bags and decided to take advantage of the free bikes to ride the mile or so into old town and get some lunch. After lunch we made it back to the guesthouse and decided to rent a moto and hit the beach and then drive up to Marble Mountain. The beach was beautiful and the water was relaxing and cool. We didn't have much time to hang out at the beach because we wanted some time at Marble Mountain. Driving ... read more

Even though we are back home I wanted to finish up the last few entries from our travels. We spent the last 10 nights in 10 different locations so access to the internet and time to work were at a premium. Thanks for following along on this journey. After Halong Bay we headed back to Hanoi for a few hours before catching a flight to DaNang. By the time we arrived at our hotel and made arrangements for the following day, there wasn't any time left to explore DaNang. We caught a sleeper bus to Hue early Thursday morning for the three hour trip north to the city of Hue. The sleeper bus was a great way to travel. For less than $5 each we had comfortable reclining seats and a great view of the countryside. ... read more

After spending a night in the jungle on a thin mat on a wooden platform and the following night in the Bangkok airport, we decided to treat ourselves in Hanoi. I used my hilton points and got us a room at the Hilton Opera Hotel in Hanoi. It was a refreshing treat and we were able to get rested and ready for our trip to Halong Bay. We did manage to get out and see the city before we left. Actually more of it than we planned. We were directionally challenged and set off without a map. Our hotel looked very close to all of the sights we wanted to see and we figured there was no way we'd get lost. After an hour or so of walking through busy streets avoiding motos and bicycles and ... read more

Chiang Mai was a bit disappointing for us overall. We both had such high expectations and it didn't quite live up to them. It is a charming city and once again the people were very friendly. The Old City is surrounded by a moat and an expansive brick wall. Much of the original wall remains intact and there were a few temples inside but most of the Old City looked like the rest of the city. There were some really great markets we walked through each day. One was a flower market with 40+ stalls selling all sorts of flowers and arrangements. There was a problem with the original trek that we booked and we had to go a day later than planned. That left us with a free day to explore the city. Our guesthouse ... read more

Our time in Bangkok was pretty relaxed. We found a hostel shortly after getting dropped of the minibus from the Cambodian border. It wasn't much of a rom but the price and location were right. We were about a block off of Khao San Road which is the well known backpacker spot in the city. The atmosphere was hectic late at night but we avoided staying out to late. The street is filled with street vendors, shops and bars. World Cup is everywhere so we watched a match or two and listened to a Thai singer play guitar and sing American folk/rock/pop rather well. During the day we visited our fair share of temples and found ourselves in a bit of a scam. Our first morning out in Bangkok we intended to visit some of the ... read more

Wednesday morning we had a few hours to see some final sights in Phnom Penh. Our first visit was to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. There aren't many pictures to share as the inside of the temples were off limit to cameras. The architecture was stunning and we saw an impressive collection of gold and silver statues, mainly of Buddha. The floor in the Silver Pagoda was cover with silver tiles. The bus ride to Siem Reap was uneventful, long but rather comfortable. We found our lodging and had a decent night's rest at the Golden Mango. Our travel from the bus stop to the hotel gave us our first taste of the extreme poverty outside the tourist areas of the country. Enormous piles of garbage were pushed into the center of the street. Many ... read more

We arrived in HCMC late on Sunday night and found a taxi to take us to our hotel. Because of our late arrival the hotel sold our room to someone else. They then led us through couple of different alleys and to a different hotel. It worked out okay although the room was not very nice. After finally getting to sleep on Sunday we woke early Monday morning to find transport to Cambodia. We ended up getting on a pretty nice coach bus with a/c. The a/c is huge because it's about 95 during the day here. The ride was comfortable and rather scenic. The border crossing was a hassle because our passports kept getting moved to the bottom of the pile. We arrived in Phnom Penh around 3PM and were met with a horde of ... read more
