Africa » Tanzania » North » Serengeti National Park October 19th 2009

Geo: -2.4492, 34.5932It has taken us several days to pluck up the courage to tackle the Crater and the Serengeti National Parks. Both of these spots are World Heritage Sites which translates to more Tanzanian bureaucracy then either Darren or I could stomach. The list of Rules and regulations make these two like Boot Camp. Permits to entry are issued for a 24 hour period which results in Safari Operators charging around the parks (particularly the Serengeti) in a completely uncontrolled manner on roads that are hazardous to say the least. If they are fortunate enough to come upon one of the big cats stalking prey and making a kill this is prime watching for the hordes of tourists in the back of the vehicles. Trouble is this event takes at least an hour and then ... read more

Geo: -3.2077, 35.4628Bugger.. we must learn to ask is this camp site going to invaded by overland trucks heavily laden with tourists.. once again we had the place to ourselves until about 4:00pm then 2 loads bumped in. The upside is Lisa and I orientate our seats to watch the tent erecting sceptical. Good for a laugh, pity we did not buy popcorn... read more

Geo: -3.36, 36.67We pulled into a camp site called Snake Park and intended to see if we could couple up with a Safari group to reduce our entrance fees into the Serengeti. To keep a long story short we have decided to hang around a few days to do domestics and then drive ourself through the Serengeti and attempt a remote border crossing into Kenya by Lake Victoria.. Easy.. will let you know how we went later.Funny thing we bumped into a couple of SAfricans with an interesting story,, Basically one Saturday they were watching Rugby and then dropped into the Outdoor Warehouse, which seemed strange to us!! There they saw a kayak and a map of Africa.. well!! They decided to buy the kayak and paddle all of the great lakes in Africa. Went home ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » North » Tarangire National Park October 15th 2009

Geo: -4.46143, 36.0681Wow what a contrast, lush green around Mt Kilimangaro has turned into a dry dusty barren landscape begging for rain. Even the Massi doods seem disheartened. Earlier we meet some SAfricans who were returning from the area we are now in. They indicated the Taragiri NP had a high concentration of animals around what is left of the Tarangire River (end of the dry season). So again off we went with no real idea of what to expect.. enough time had lapsed from our last bush camping experiences so that Lisa's memory of being in the tent had faded. We paid the entry fees and headed in for an afternoon safari drive, sure enough there are heaps of animals here, Elephants, Giraffe & Ostraiges. Come 6pm when we are no longer permitted to drive ... read more

Geo: -8.30873, 33.4863Okay so we have successfully negotiated the Zambia/Tanzania border crossing. Both were not without significant frustrations. We were primed by other Tourists that the Tanzanian go slow strategy was a plan to elicit bribes so we were prepared for the worst. We were not prepared for the arrogance, aggression and pig headedness of the officials. Darren sent me packing to mind the car as I was definitely going to kill someone. The really frustrating thing is the agents (present at every border crossing), for some reason they assume we "Muzungu" (?? Derogatory term for a white person) are incredibly stupid and need help to fill out the arrivals form. Gosh I only have two degrees hence I really feel I need someone to point out where I need to write my name. I did ... read more

Geo: -11.2, 31.75By now we were running out of most stuff, food, cigs and batteries for the tent fan so temper(s) were a bit frayed. Finally hit the bitumen and were both very pleased. Especially Darren found some cigarettes. Resigning our selves to a night in a border town we made hast in the direction of Tanzania.. Lisa wins hands down for seeing signs of great places to stay.. We turned left at a sign saying camping and hot showers, internet and a hot spring.. well the thought that crossed my mind was what the hell do we want with a hot spring.. well I am happy to report we have found the new location of VEHTEC head office.. Pack your bags fellas (Peter Faggoter you are more than welcome to relocate as well).. there is ... read more
