Geo: -11.7813, 32.3328Okay so we are now focused on heading towards the Tanzanian border, we did not want to backtrack to Lusaka or into Malawie thus I was happy to receive a dodgy hand drawn map of a track heading north in our preferred direction. Rumour had it we could get to the border no problems.Well to cut a fairly long story short its now four days later and we have popped out the other side. In summary the Shorty has not been out of 4WD the whole time, being completely lost is now a normal state of mind, the track did pass through a large number of villages, including right through a school yard, the Shorty parting the kids like Moses across the water, crossed two airstrips, covered some of the most knarly bull dust ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228Once again the road maps helped us out!!! Not..headed into Chipata and then the turn off to South Luangwa Nation Park.. at least this time there was a road however it had corrugations like I had never seen before.. I could only get the Shorty up to 50Km/hr above that the back end wanted to swap with the front.. less than 50 and my eye's could not focus.. not so bad only lasted for 110km's..Arrived and decided to stay at a place called Track & trails.. nice place.. green grass swimming pool with a view over looking the Luangwa River only higher up this time.. Even as I write this blog I can hear the Lions roar just across the river.. crazy..The river is great for viewing the Hippo's and an Elephant wandered by ... read more

Geo: -15.1093, 30.2069In the morning we packed and went swiftly.. we thought we would get to Lusaka (the Capital) about midday and planned to eat lunch at a place called Ghandi's.. very nice Indian thalli's and Chai.. stocked up with food and fuel and headed out..It was approaching 5:00pm, through what felt like the middle of now where, just about resided ourselves to camping in the scrub somewhere and Lisa noticed a dodgy sign to a place to camp. We followed a dirt track winding through villages, waving to all the kids along the way thinking if there is a camp down here we are going to be amazed. Well amazed we were, as we were greeted with the most creative camp site called Bridge Camp, run by an English couple, complete with bar and swimming ... read more

Geo: -15.8636, 27.7872Heading to Lusaka now and the road is being replaced (thanks very much to the Chinese Government) thus numerous detours which made a long trip even longer.. we came across a place called Moorings Camp and it is great in the middle of nowhere green grass and a happy array of puppy dogs. Interestingly there turned out to be a number of these farms where you can kind of camp on the front lawn of the farm house, very nice but a bit on the smelly side. We think they were farming pigs. ... read more

Geo: -17.8573, 25.8429Irony is the only word I can think of.. when in the Okavango Delta there was too much water around thus the animals were dispersed.. arrive at the Falls and the water levels were down and the falls were not at their best.. never mind Africa is all about timing.. with reduced water levels the Zam side is not as exciting as the Zim side.. we discovered this after parting with $20USD to enter and then a long hot walk to see some distant mist.. the area is definitely worth a look however we did not have it in us to walk back and get the temporary Zam exit permit and the Zim entry to look at the Zim side.. sometimes the African heat just sucks it out of you.. back to the Waterfront ... read more

Geo: -17.8117, 25.2031We awoke in the Kwai camp to another thunderstorm. I just got the tent down and it pored with rain, nice one.During the night were awoken from a peaceful slumber by the sounds of Elephants eating very close.. as there was distant lightning i decided to keep my eyes open and wait for a flash to see where it was.. good grief less than 20mtrs away.. Lisa asked what did you see, i carefully replied 'not much i think it is not close to us at all'.. closing my eye i returned to sleep.. The Leopard also visited during the night however it just passed through. Anyway.. the rain came in not enough to effect the river levels just enough to moisten the mud and make the sand very tractable.. excellent..We jump started the ... read more

Geo: -19.0933, 22.4451Raining again, very strange weather for this time of the year normally very hot and little water. The delta is still full thus the animals are not concentrated around the water holes..Camp packed we head off having a great time wandering the various tracks the rain has made the sand easy to drive.. come across the 1st river crossing on our way to bridge 3.. I stop to check it out and another chap on the other side is also having a look.. we both wade to the middle and find it is about 2mm short of the male critical zone.. his vehicle is a petrol version of a RAV with low range thrown in.. I get the WD40 out and spray his critical components and whish him luck.. If ya get stuck I ... read more

Geo: -19.1542, 23.7703The morning we awoke to a thunder storm.. yep it was raining and the lightening was so bright it hurt your eye's even with them being closed, then the thunder came.. on my God.. the biggest bangs I have even heard..Off we head.. we had read a note in the dunny that said we could follow the Kwai Community Road direct to the North Gate entrance to the Okavango delta National Park.. seems straight forward… We seem hell bent on finding the only dam roads that nearly deliver.. this time we could see the sign on the other side of a water crossing.. I waded out until I was half way up my thighs.. now I am not a real woose.. however when wading into a delta stream and things start to swim by ... read more

Geo: -19.6, 23.7833First real experience of camping without any fences separating them from us. After sun down Lisa and I headed to the toilet to get some water for washing up, I heard a rustling in the grass behind and went ti investigate.. no lions only a dam big brown coloured snake approx 2.5mtrs long heading our way probably because it could smell the water.. no worries Lisa grabbed a bigger torch and in true Oze style we scared the thing off.Feeling victorious we retuned to camp sad down to enjoy a cup of tea.. all of a sudden we heard big grass crunching noises coming from the bush.. Lisa flew towards the car and exclaimed 'Darren get in the car its something big'.. Yep she was right however I was somewhat more controlled and with ... read more
