Day 1 - Up nice and early for our flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Arriving very early at the International Airport, but soon find ourselves being herded to check in, then onto a plane headed to Pakse - Lao 6.30am departure, it seems a little strange as our plane is not due to leave until 8:15am and meant to be a direct flight. When we asked we are told the flight had been cancelled. We will now have to wait 4 hrs in transit at Pakse, something we were trying to avoid. One thing we have learned while traveling is to only believe half of what you see and are told. Go with the flow, it all works out in the end. Pakse Airport, our transit stop we will be our last touch with Lao soil. ... read more

Our 10 am VIP bus to Vientiane finally leaves 10.45am it's suppose to take only 3hrs, the road is very rough, the bus speedo os not working, the odd speed sign suggest 30km, the other instrument lights are flickering on and off. Just imagine traveling on 50mts of tar then 100mts of red rocky dirt road all the way, and takes 6 hrs instead! Not only the bus is rattling so are our teeth and wobbly bits. It must be hard for the people living on the road edge in small villages much of what I can see through our dust covered window is also covered in thickly in red dust. This is the main road from Vang Vieng to Vientiane. The Vientiane bus depot is about 10 mins from town and requires separate transportation into ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang March 5th 2012

Our flight number for Luang Prabang is now calling us to the boarding gate, 8.30pm departure. We pass through 2 main gates down a few flight of stairs and boarded a shuttle bus. Looking towards the tarmac we see one small lonely Lao plane, surely this can not be for us!!! it's less than 100mts away! Finally the shuttle bus moves. It seems so funny as we pull up along side that exact plane. All aboard, it's not long before we're in the air, 1 hr 30mins, dinner and drinks provided. I'm so glade we took this option, I'm starting to get calluses on my bum. A tuk tuk delivers us to our next hotel, family owned. This is in the old section of town, there is a 11.30pm night curfew, no drinking or drunken behavior ... read more

An early start today, as we head to Halong Bay for a cruise around the bay on a junk. Still overcast and drizzlly, not very promising, but still hope to capture the beauty of Halong Bay and relax, as it's been go, go, go. Our lift has not turned up, could they have possibly forgotten???? A quick phone call confirms that yes they had and are now on there way. Climbing aboard a mini bus we can see it's going to be a tight squeeze. All our luggage has to come to as we will be moving onto our next country after the cruise (Oh so Squeeze!!!!!). We have finally arrived at Halong Bay port, all the junks are either returning from an overnight cruise or reloading with new travellers. The weather has not improved that ... read more

It"s 11:45 pm touch down at Hanoi Airport, so very deserted as we are the last flight in for the night. Our hotel transfer is surpose to be waiting for us, but is no where to be found. An airport security personal comes to our aid, he promptly rings the hotel, telling them to get someone to us pronto, eventually sleepy eyed taxii driver turns up finally. The temperture has dropped, a slight coldness in the air, damp roads and the streets are quite. After checking into our room, its straight to bed. The beds have been a interesting mix of hard, harder and concrete hard with the odd coil spring bed that is more like sleeping on raw wire coils. Most of the time we are so tired that all of the above are gratefully ... read more

Leaving Hoi An for Hue on the midday seater bus, and guss what? Its almost empty so we are all able to take up 2 seats as they can be a little bit squeezy, As we head further north the weather is getting cooler and it looks like we will need to buy some jackets. Our trip to Hue has gone quickly and the sceanery has changed from beaches, sand and some mountains to very steep winding roads carved in the side of mountains covered in mist, small villages, rice farms and water buffulos. Arrival time 6pm, just enough time to have a quick look around and purchase 3 warm jackets. Our hotel is stituated 70 metres in from the well known Vietnamese Perfume River (perfumed Hmmm...????) we quickly find out what is to see and ... read more

All aboard the night bus, we now head to Hoi An a 12hr overnight journey up the east coast heading north, as it grows darker the coastline becomes a sea of bright dots in their thousands, these are the fishing boats with powerful lights shinning over the water to attract the squid and other sea life for their nightly catch, as the bus bounces along the night becomes day and the country side is changing, you now see more rice fields that stretch for miles, all very lush and dotted throughout the fields you see plastic raincoat scarecrows. Nha Trang is well known for its pristine beaches, many beautiful islands and coral reefs providing an opportunity to go diving and swimming. Nha Trang is also a magnet for young backpackers who partake in one of the many booze party cruisers that weaves between the many islands. Looking out from the main beach you can see Seafood farms in the middle of the bay and mini fishing villages. Fisherman row the round shaped boats called "Conical" out to their seafood section to tend the catch. Nha Trang is known for it's excellent seafood variety. Once again we hire 3 scooters to investigate some of the main tourist attractions that can be seen around Nha Trang; The Pe Nagar Towers standing tall with it's square red baked bricks and pyramid topped apex, are situated on the ... read more
