We flew into Cairns and made our way up to Port Douglas where we spent the next four nights. The climate was noticeably more humid in this tropical region and the weather constantly fluctuated between rain and sun, but remained very hot throughout. We arrived around 9pm, so had to wander down the road in the dark to find a convenience store to buy dinner. On the way there, there were numerous rustles coming from the bushes which kept making Mark jump into Hazel's arms in a cartoon fashion. We saw a few toads, but nothing more theatening and were glad of the Shell torch Joanna had donated to light the way. We discovered later, whilst on our Daintree tour, that Crocodiles are actually rare in the town and that the nocturnal snakes are likely to ... read more

We have to apologise in this blog for getting overexcited with our photos and videos, again! We have a new toy in the shape of an underwater camera and we took so many photos that we managed to use up the whole battery in the space of a day. Count yourselves lucky we didn't upload the full 300 shots and eight videos!! We have spent the last few days staying in Airlie Beach, which is the mainland base for visiting the Whitsunday Islands. We were pretty disappointed when we arrived on Thursday morning to discover that it was forecast to rain for the next four days but, armed with a hard-drive full of films and episodes of Mad Men, we settled in to wait for our planned sailing trip, which we'd booked for Saturday and Sunday. ... read more

This next leg of our adventure involves the central east coast of Australia, using Brisbane as a hub. As the country is so massive, our plan to try and tackle the enormous distances involved includes flying up the east coast, taking a coach trip up the middle - after some more flying to get there - and then driving up and down the west coast, using Perth as another hub. It feels like a bit of an epic journey, and in hindsight we're covering off 4 out of 5 states and ignoring Adelaide/South Australia, but it was the best route we could come up with at the time! To kick off, we flew from Melbourne to Brisbane on Tiger Airways and made our way to a random industrial estate near the airport to pick up a ... read more

We arrived back at Sydney airport and were greeted by Jan and Alek who were very kindly putting us up again for the following 5 days. We had some much needed R&R, washed all of our horrible backpacker clothes and relaxed. We generally spent the mornings planning the next part of our trip, the afternoons down on Bondi Beach soaking up some rays and the evenings eating all sorts of proper food which we'd been missing, including Indian curry, a BBQ and Alek's famous spinach pie. It was all delicious and set us up nicely to begin our tour of Australia. We flew from Sydney to Melbourne Airport and picked up a Hire Car from Avis (a Kia - "oooo, nice wheels" I hear you say!). There was a little excitment when picking up the car ... read more

Sadly this will be our final blog from New Zealand, as we are about to fly from Auckland, back to Sydney, to start our tour around Australia. This is a bit of a mammoth blog with lots of photos and even video links. (Appologies!) Our final leg back up New Zealand started at Kaikoura, where we stayed in a nice little hostel called "Fish Tank". As you can probably imagine it was all themed around sealife, including the paintings on the walls and even ceilings - the ceiling of the kitchen was like looking out through the top of a fish tank. There was also a large balcony area overlooking the Kaikoura high street and beach, which was just outside our room, so we ate most of our meals out there which was great. Kaikoura means ... read more

Leaving Queenstown behind us, we are now heading north back up the south island and our next stop was Lake Tekapo. Our first break of the day was at a supermarket, where the driver encouraged us to buy food for the next couple of days, as we were off to 'wup-wup' (aka the middle of nowhere). We also stopped off at a Salmon Farm - not sure why, but the Japanese tourists did seem to enjoy feeding the fish! - where we splashed out on some salmon fillets for our dinner. Our final breaks on the day's bus journey were Twizel (gateway to Mt Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand) and then lake Pukaki for views across to Mt Cook. Lake Tekapo is renowned for star gazing, as it's in the middle of nowhere, with ... read more

Our journey from Fox Glacier to Lake Wanaka was a fairly long one, so the day was broken up with plenty of photo stops (some more exciting than others!) and plenty of sand flies. After leaving lake Matheson, which was a definite high point, we headed further south via Knights Point (where we spotted a dolphin pod out to sea) and then the Blue Pools. At the end of a scenic drive around Lake Hawea we arrived in Wanaka mid afternoon. We checked into our hostel (Matterhorn Backpackers) and were informed by the owner that we were priviledged to have our own block in the "love shack". This turned out to be the garden shed in the middle of the vegetable patch (I kid you not), with "LOVE HACK" on the wooden door (S had been ... read more

We left Nelson first thing in the morning and headed towards the west coast. We stopped at a place called Cape Foulwind (named by Cpt Cook after his ship was blown off course here) to see the Fur Seal colony. We managed to spot a couple of pups, but I think we arrived around feeding time, so all the mothers had gone out fishing. We continued south down the coast and our lunch stop was at the "famous"? Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. We had a picnic in the sunshine and had a quick walk to see the rocks before getting back on the coach. They are formed by the erosion of limestone layers in the rock (did I mention I got an A for GCSE Geography?) I had to explain to Hazel that they look like stacks ... read more

We set off from Wellington bright and early and jumped on the Interislander ferry. The crossing was very calm which came as a surprise given the stories we had heard from previous trips. The ferry pulls around the headland from Wellington and crosses the sea fairly quickly. The next two hours are spent navigating through the Marlborough Sounds before pulling into a pretty little town called Picton. We had some great views when crossing as the water was really still and the sun was shining. We even saw a couple of dolphins pass by. Once we had reclaimed our rucksacks (yes - on a ferry in NZ you have to check-in your luggage) we found our Magic Bus waiting just outside the ferry office and set off for Nelson. The scenery had become endless fields of ... read more

We've spent the last couple of days mooching around Wellington, getting a city fix before we head on to the South Island and all of its scenery and national parks. There aren't a huge amount of 'must-see' places here, so we've...been up to the view point at Mount Victoria, gone for coffee at a trendy little cafe (Raglan Roast), taken a picnic up the cable car to the botanic gardens, been to the cinema (cheap night here is Tuesday, so we saw Django last night), wandered round the national museum, Te Papa, and strolled along the waterfront trying to see if we could gatecrash our way into the Pinot Noir convention (the answer is no, unfortunately). On the way here, we also stopped off in the town of Taihape, which is apparently the home of the ... read more
