Just a girl and her passport...

There are truly 2 things that give me a true "rush"....The first is standing in an airport w/passport in hand the second is the smell of leather inside a purse store. Oh yeah! Ok, so I love to travel and I love to write (lets not forget shop!).. so this my little corner of cyberspace where I can write about my personal favorite places....destinations I still dream of....bazaars, mercardos, outdoor markets I have visited. I'm still wandering..a Gypsy Girl on the go.... now where's my passport?

Today's agenda was to be a fairly relaxing day as we drove up the hills towards Mt. Batukaru. Our beloved guide picked us up at 9:00 a.m. on the dot and off we went. I have been wanting to visit a silver shop to show Be how the artisans work and design. So Nyoman made a quick stop at Prapen Jewelry just outside of Ubud. Yes, it is a typical tourist spot but I did enjoy watching the creative part of jewelry making. It was very detailed and time consuming to make all the little silver balls and just watching them glue their designs together was fascinating. I kept thinking of my carpal tunnel issue and I know I'd be fired within the first week if I were given the chance to create jewelry! Ha! It ... read more

Early Monday morning, we boarded our flight from Denpasar to Central Java on Lion Air. Finally. The Borobudur. I could almost touch it. Our flight was fairly short and as we landed in Jogja and stepped into another world again. Java is another world so it seemed to me. With Mount Merapi hovering in the distance, the beautiful Call to Prayer sounding off in the background....Bali seemed so "far away" when we landed in Yogyakarta. The humidity was extremely high (as usual) so we decided to check into to our hotel and relax the remainder of the afternoon. We stayed at a decent hotel near the Sultan's Palace. The accommodations were good for the price and the staff were extremely friendly. Apparently, there are lots of students in this city and it's apparent with all the ... read more

Ugh...I lost my last entry! Don't you hate when that happens? Ok, recap....Today Nyoman took us on a tour of the Ubud countryside to show us that rice paddies still exist (Thank goodness!) and that even with all this growth tourism, you can still see that lush landscape. He was right! Not only did we see those gorgeous green fields of grain but I was convinced that not all has really changed too much. Yes, its there's too many stores, too much traffic....but Bali still has it's charm and it still surreal when you get a chance to take it all in. Our goal was Mount Batur and the mother temple. So we started out around 9:30 a.m. Our first stop was at Goa Ganej which is the elephant cave. This place has ruins and an ... read more

Yesterday the festivities were in full swing for the Balinese New Year's Eve festival... starting at 4 a.m. in the morning. I love Bali and I love their traditions....even the ones where you bang the pots in the wee early morning to scare off the evil spirits and wake up slumbering tourists like myself. Before I even opened my eyes, I heard the roosters going and the clanging of pots and drums. I couldn't help but laugh because any other place in the world, this scenario would not have flown so well within any city, village, town. Have I told you I loved Bali? At 7 a.m. I headed down for my cup of coffee and met humidity and the smiling faces of the family members living next door. Staying here in a home stay and ... read more

Good Morning, Bali! I woke up to the sounds of crowing roosters, the faint scent of incense, a feeling of confusion and a full dose of humidity.....I had this funny feeling I had been "here" before. Ah....the roosters crowing at 4 a.m. What an orchestra after sleeping off my jetlag from the night before. Yes, "here" is where I found myself after 16 years of being away. Bali, my first love.... so glad to be back! Going back to one's first love can be a beautiful thing if you're lucky, right? It can also be a depressing thing. To be honest, I felt a huge scense of foreboding. Maybe age has made me such a cynic? Jaded? Blah! After all, 16 years away from Bali was a very very long time. Would my love still be ... read more

Good Morning Bloggers! So yesterday was another gorgeous winter day in Sacramento. With nothing better to do other than making our way to H Street for crepes at Crepe Escapes, we decided to get on the road and make our way down to the Freeport/Clarksburg area to check out the Old Sugar Mill Wineries. I had read an article last year about a wine and chocolate event held at a place called "The Old Sugar Mill" - now the location name was enough to get my curiousity up to explore and research but now throw some wine and chocolate into the mix and I was intrigued. Now I'm not a big wine lover or "winophile" as I dub those who seem to never get enough of the bottled stuff. But I do appreciate a nice glass ... read more

Day - October 26th - My Last Night in Bangkok Thai Phrases I should have learned before I got on the MRT (Subway station): 1)Kor-toht-kha. Phom dichan kit wah phom dichan long-taang English translation: Excuse me, I think I’m lost! 2) Kor yah gae-bpuat noi kha? English translation: Can I have a painkiller? What I couldn’t find the guidebook but really really really needed to know today was: “Where in the hell is the exit out of this chaotic market? I think I’m going to faint! Help!” Ok, before I jump into my lovely shopping trip today at the famous Chatuchak market. I need to tell ya that I completely missed my flight from Phuket to Bangkok yesterday after because I, like a dumbass, read the departure time on my flight itinerary wrong! The departure time ... read more

Day ??? - I think it’s irrelevant by now but its Monsoon Saturday for me! I’m sitting here inside my room with the sliding doors wide open and I’m listening to the rain which has been non-stop for hours. I woke up at 5 a.m. again because the downpour was so loud and my stupid cellphone kept vibrating on the nightstand next to me. So I was up before the Sun….again. But it was nice to hear the rainfall and the birds sing so early in the morning. The view from my room is very beautiful - though it doesn’t overlook the beach - I have this view of the mountain and the misty fog that sits on top of it every morning. The hillside is completely dark green and all I see are palm trees ... read more

Day - Oh my, I have totally forgotten! But let me title this: Wat Chalong, A Wonderful Friend and The Fortune Teller Ok, so where do I even begin? I woke up early (because that’s what I do when I don’t have to work! - how ironic, huh?) at 5:30 a.m. I went to bed fairly early last night because after 6 p.m., this resort gets very dark outside and it’s easy to wind down and fall asleep. My room has a balcony that overlooks this beautiful lagoon, but the pool shuts down at 6 p.m. and then there’s silence. Mim picked me up at 11 a.m. and the moment we met, we just talked each other’s ear off! She is such a beautiful person! It was a friendship at first sight! I was so happy ... read more

I arrived in Phuket yesterday after a quick flight from Chaing Mai. The weather was overcast and it was obvious that it was raining off and on. Phuket’s airport is about 45 minutes from downtown Patong. I was able to get a metered taxi for 400 bahts which was cheaper than the other independent taxis who will approach you the moment you leave the airport. I recommend the metered taxis and as you leave the entrance of the airport, they have a sign and a small line to your right as you’re walking out. I researched a few - ok, a gazillion hotels - in the area of Patong Beach. Originally, I was planning on staying in Krabi but it was low-season and I figured I could deal with the crowds in Patong. I was right, ... read more
