Middle East » Turkey August 26th 2013

Geo: 41.0245, 28.9881It has come to my attention that very often some of my plans, although well thought out beforehand, never come to fruition. This has been another city where my list of possibilities was greater than the list of accomplishments. Yesterday, our first day in Istanbul after disembarking the train, we spent the morning with the pharmacy and recuperation of our energy stockpiles. I had pre-purchased tickets to the Topkapi Palace prior to leaving home for about $60. This way we don't stand in any lines. The plan was to go there, Blue Mosque and the underground Basilica Cistern on that day. Because the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays, we would do that on Monday prior to boarding the ship. We did see the Blue Mosque and the Cistern Sunday and walked around since ... read more

Geo: 41.0245, 28.9881It's 1am and the train makes another stop at a desolate, seemingly abandoned station in the middle of nowhere. The sudden braking action of the aging train squealing in the darkness awakens me and I venture out into the hallway hoping to see a sign on a station to give an idea of our location. No luck. The guy next door is up too and we converse in a mixture of English and Spanish. He is from Mexico. He has traveled by train in Europe before but his first time in Eastern Europe and he's not impressed. It's certainly not like France, Switzerland or Germany. He says on his return from Istanbul he will fly. I understand. We talk for for 45 minutes and part ways. Mom is asleep and I return it bed. ... read more

Geo: 44.4479, 26.09795:30am came pretty quickly. We were packed already so we got dressed, loaded up and down to the taxis stand for a trip to the train station. At the taxi line, all the cars were tiny and as I asked each one, they appeared disinterested in dealing with our luggage. Finally, a guy pulls up and puts one case in the trunk, one in the back seat with me and Mom rides up front. Problem solved. Like I said before, in this area the people have a hard time dealing with any challenges and prefer to ignore them.We got to the station and bought our reservations for 6 leu, that $2. The train was on time and we arrived in Bucuresti by 10am as planned, just less than 3 hours. Following the directions of ... read more

Geo: 45.66, 25.61Sleeping on a train, or trying to, is a whole new experience for us. We get settled in and I lay there for an hour before I start to get used to the crickets-clack, the rocking and all the other sounds trains make. But we dozed off until about 2am when the Hungarian police boarded the train to greet us. Passports please. We had them now. We're in bed with our cabin door open while they compare our faces with those on the passport. Can you see the difference? The one in the passport is "smiling". Then, "What is the purpose of your visit?". Just like the movies. So these guys finally leave the train after wasting a half hour of good sleep time and we finally get back to sleep when the train ... read more

Geo: 47.4984, 19.0408We were up about 8 and went for our free breakfast. Got more free fruit, Angie. Mom packed up all our stuff and we walked around a little. Then we checked out, put our luggage into storage and checked out some more parts of the town. We arranged for a taxi to the train station at 2:30 but we returned to the hotel around 2. At 2:30 the taxi showed up right at the door so we didn't have to wheel luggage two blocks on cobblestones. He took us right to the train station for €10 plus 5 more for savings us all the walking. He has a special permit to enter the pedestrian only areas. We're at the station about an hour early and I check the train board. Our train to Budapest was ... read more

Geo: 48.1484, 17.1073We slept in a little this morning but not Queenie style, and went down to our free breakfast. Mom packed our stuff. That's a job. Check out from the Stephanplatz was 11am. We took the cab to Wien HBF, the main station in Vienna. It's huge and under total construction. Our train into Slovakia leaves at 12:21pm and we're there 45 minutes early. No first class on this one. We're traveling legal now with our passports in Mom's neck pouch underneath her clothes. We shouldn't have to access them anyway. The 1 hour train ride is uneventful. I called the hotel to arrange a limo (actually a cab) to meet us at the Bratislava train station for €10 or $13. The train arrived on time at 1:27pm but the station is old with no elevators ... read more

Geo: 48.22, 16.37The hotel we're staying at is great. We got stuck in a suite since we had to add an extra night but it was nice last night. Ya, $300 nice! We had another free breakfast this morning and then walked about 6 blocks down to the US Consulate to replace our stolen passports. Since my passport was the only thing of mine that was taken, I still had my ID, copy of our passports, wallet, etc. Mom has lost all of her stuff so it's harder for her. We had to stop first downstairs to get our passport pictures and spend 48€. Then to the 4th floor for our 9:30 appointment. We were early so we got in quickly. We had to fill out paperwork, submit our passport copies, police report and $270. By ... read more

Geo: 48.22, 16.37It's still raining today. We got our free breakfast. I called the US Consulate in Vienna, Austria as soon as they opened. They made an appointment for us tomorrow at 9:30am. Bring our paperwork too. OK. Now we have a plan. I called the Hotel Stephanplatz and asked if they had a room available Monday night. We were already booked on Tuesday but we needed to get to Austria right away. They had a room but, unfortunately it was a suite. We had to miss our activities in Salzburg, the salt mines tour and Mozart concert. We were fortunate to be able to continue in Germany but we needed to get the passport issue behind us.So we never went to Salzburg but spent an extra day in Fussen and an extra day in Vienna. ... read more

Geo: 47.5714, 10.7017This morning we had our free breakfast and caught a bus at 8:30am to get to the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. Let's just call them N and H for short. H is the castle of the parents and N is the one that the son built later. It's also the castle Disney used to help create "Sleeping Beauty Castle". Mom liked the fact that I had reserved our tickets online and so we walked right to the front and got our tickets, first to H, then N.. Mom picked out a carriage and off we went to the castle. What we found was that we were going to the wrong castle so we had to complete our ride to the castle, then back down again, then up to the H castle. We were now ... read more

Geo: 47.5714, 10.7017So we left Lucerne in the morning for a 4 hour train ride. The first leg to Zurich was uneventful. We had quite a walk to get to the next train taking us from Zurich to Buchloe, Germany. We boarded the first class car and Mom went to get settled into our assigned seats while I strapped our luggage in the storage area. This discourages people from easily taking luggage from this unattended area. I finished and met her in the car and she was telling me about some man that ran onto the train, asking her questions in Romanian that she didn't understand. She asked me if I could help him but he was already gone. As I was sitting down she started to panic, saying her "fanny pack" was missing and she ... read more
