Europe » Greece » Ionian Islands » Corfu » Corfu Town September 15th 2013

Geo: 39.6178, 19.9196So we went to the island of Corfu. We got there at the usual time of around 8am and they started disembarking soon after. We had no official tour set up for this port so we just took the ship shuttle offered and went to the town. The bus dropped us off right next to an old fort sitting on a point offering some sort of protection to the town in days past. You could walk all the way to the top for a great vantage point of the town but Mom said no to that. So I was content to wander about the lower portion, taking pictures of walls, coastline and massive architectural structures from unique angles to add interest to much of what we had seen in places before. I put Karen ... read more

Geo: 42.4441, 18.7816With a quick breakfast , just cereal and coffee for me and eggs and oatmeal for Mom, we headed out at 8 am on the tender for a tour of Kotor and Budva in the country of Montenegro. This country along with Serbia and Croatia all used to be part of the old country of Yugoslavia. Our tour begins with a half hour drive to the old town of Budva, right on the Mediterranean. It's an old walled city dating back over a thousand years. We arrived by bus, then entered the city with our guide who walked with us, explaining historic sights as we went, for about 15 minutes. Then we walked the city on our own for about 45 minutes before heading back to meet the bus. Mom helped some older lady ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik September 13th 2013

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948We had no plans for this port when we arrived at noon. We took a bus shuttle that HAL offered to get us to the old town. We walked around after the 2 1/2 mile bus trip when I noticed a bunch of people walking through this big stone archway. We headed that way and as soon as we got to the inside, we found a whole town inside the walls. No vehicles, just walking streets. The buildings were very old and beautiful. We found out that much of the town was damaged in the 1991 Serbian war but had been repaired over the last 20 years. Mom walked though the town, checking out the sites and stores. Their style of jewelry was not to her liking. Everything was shaped like balls or owls. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice September 12th 2013

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384Well, I said she wouldn't want to return to the town today. Her knee was still bothering her. We had some breakfast and went onto the pier for a little free wifi. It wasn't long before the ship left at 2pm on its way to Croatia. We sat up in the Crows Nest bar on the 10th deck and watched as we sailed out of the Venice harbor out into the Mediterranean. Mom checked out the ship store when it opened but didn't buy anything. We watched a movie on TV, went for dinner ( more of a snack) and checked out the 8pm show. It was a magician show that was pretty good. Funny too. Back to the room ready for Dubrovnik tomorrow.... read more

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384We arrived in Venice in the morning and after breakfast, we headed out about 9:30am to the old town. We bought a ticket good for unlimited use on the public vaporetto and boarded it right at the harbor. It's about 25 minutes to St Marc Square, sort of the center of things. Once off the water taxi, we worked our way into the city, burrowing our way through the streets and alleys, over the arched bridges spanning various canals and attempting to avoid the hoards of people swarming the city too. We checked out areas loaded with fancy shops like Prada, Armani, Gucci, Bvlgari and Vendi. Tennis shoes for $2500? Leather belt for $400? Purses $5000? I tried to purchase a few of these but we ran out of time. Outside the shops on ... read more

Geo: 39.0742, 21.8243Today we slept in a little longer and got up to breakfast around 9. We returned to the stateroom. Mom cleaned up stuff while I watched TV. Then we went to a special invitational champagne luncheon held by the captain and received a nice gift. Then we attended a presentation on Holland America cruises. After that it was up to the Crows Nest bar for a couple of smoothies and Internet. We listened to a real good singer and guitar player for a while, went to buffet dinner, 8pm show and back to our room. Mom stopped at the ship shop and returned a bracelet she bought a year ago that had a missing a stone and they gave her a new one -guaranteed forever.... read more

Geo: 37.65, 21.3167Katakolon is a small town on the coast very near where the Olympics first began over 2000 years ago. It's about a 45 minute drive out to the site to see the ruins. Mom is getting tired of ruins. She says that if you want to see something ruined, check out my knee. Our next stop is Venice so in order to let her leg rested up, we skipped the history lesson and stayed in town where she just walked the 3 blocks of the Main Street. We arrived in this port later than usual, at 10am and we had to leave by 4:30pm so we didn't have a lot of time anyway. There were some nice shops to see and Mom liked that. Quite a few dress and clothes shops and the usual jewelry. ... read more

Geo: 36.4044, 25.3959We had heard that Santorini was a very nice place to visit. When we were coming into the port, we could see the houses up on top of the cliff above the coast. Most of them were white. We were told that before paint, they coated the houses with lime to weatherproof them and that was white in color. Now they just paint them white. There are only three ways to get from the pier to the city up on top: walk up a winding staircase, ride donkeys up the staircase or take an aerial tram. We were with a private tour group of 15 of us and we took the tram. Mom was not messing with those donkeys. The tram ride was short and fun for €4 each way. At the top, we met ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens September 7th 2013

Geo: 37.9792, 23.7166Today we had no plans locked in for today. I had put together a day where we take the train/tram to the Plaka area of Athens known for its winding, cobblestone streets inviting travelers into its shops and restaurants. We had walked thought the area last night after the restaurant. People were out on the narrow streets eating outside and the shops were all open. I thought Mom would like to go there to check out the Greek stores but her leg was sore from all the stair climbing the past few days. Although it was warm today, in the high 70s, there was a few drops of rain. Mom probably needed the break so we stayed aboard the ship. We organized the stateroom a bit and then while I went for the Internet, ... read more

Geo: 37.9792, 23.7166If you read the story about our day in Crete, then you know how a day began in Athens, only this time with Frank. He was holding a sign with our names on it when we exited the port. This time we rode in a 12 seat luxury van. He said that we were the only ones scheduled so it was all ours. To get ahead of the crowds, He took us straight to the Acropolis, showing us sites on the way. We got there and there wasn't hardly anyone there. By law, he can't enter the site since he is a driver and not a guide so he waited at the bottom while we started our ascent. The pathway up to the Acropolis is paved with marble and can be slippery even when ... read more
