These were the Hotels/B & B's that made the trip enjoyable. Day 1 & 2-EDINBURGH- THE SCOTSMAN An upscale hotel located in the center of town, walking distance to so many attractions, restaurants and transportation. Ivar, the doorman, was key to our success while in this city, and looked at him as our first Scottish friend. A lovely, comfortable refurbished hotel. Definite recommendation. Day 3 & 4-OBAN - On the western coastline at the OBAN BAY HOTEL As one Scotsman put it, 'it's a tired Hotel'. It was nice to visit, but we would have preferred a less 'touristy' town. (Uh, yeh, we're tourist, too). Nice selection of restaurants, beautiful scenery, fun Oban Whisky Tour and sampling. Day 5 -7-ISLE OF SKY - in the town of Achnahanaid, 6 miles south of Portree . As we left the beautiful isle of Skye, even though it was cloudy, misty, hi-50’sF, our next destination: Laggan. This was our ‘wing-it’ B&B that reservations were made Tuesday night. We were pleasantly surprised how nice the accommodations were; cozy, comfy bed, common lounge area, as we visited with other guests, and a toasty cast iron fireplace. Awaiting for us in our room were fresh homemade shortbread cookies. Yum!!! Fiona and Simon were 1st rate owners with a fabulous Scottish breakfast. Earlier that afternoon,we traveled northeast to Newtonmore to stop at the 125 yr old golf course, which would have been challenging to play because of the winds. We shared a hamburger and chips as we visited with the lovely lady who managed the club. What a delight, she even had family in Columbus ! Thursday, was ... read more

Very relaxing days at our studio apt(known as ‘self-catering apts). After our self-made American breakfast, we waited for the rain to pass then we started our drive north of Portree(capital of Skye)around one of the finger peninsula. This is the Trotternish and Quiraing area with a magnificent and breathtaking landscape. As we stopped to hike up the path to some ruins, we encountered 50-60 mph gusty winds that literally ‘moved’ me. Just glad the wind was blowing away from the cliff!! Crazy narrow roads, but we made it back safely. Villages are far and few between, with a strong history background. Little change will be seen in years to come. Tues, we walked the grounds of the house and hiked down to the rocky beach where we were told to whistle and you’ll see a seal. ... read more

Driving to the Isle of Skye,we drove through cells of rain, mist and clear weather. The farther north we reached, the landscape changed drastically ... it was a wow-factor. Majestic mountains with small gushing waterfalls and the formation of the clouds allowing the sun to peak through as we traveled along the 2 lane road. We’ve never seen so many rainbows in 1 day! You can spot those ‘from away’, they’re the ones who stop to gaze up at them until they disappear. Settled in our remote studio apt overlooking the Sound of Raasay and the mountainline. AWESOME! Weather is cloudy, spots of rain, 50’sF. ... read more

Left Edinburgh on Friday, just a slight drizzle and in the 50’s. Traveled north of Glasgow, to Oban, bt way of Loch Lomand and Trussachs National Park. Loch Lomand is Scotland’s largest lake Very nice day to travel, at that point. Once we passed Glasgow, the roads were very narrow and some were single track roads. Again, another quaint town, Oban (‘small bay’)is a busy port town and popular destination for visitors. Delightful weather (hi 50’sF-mid 60’s F),fun British Isle food and some musicians playing outside. Oban is also know for it’s global brew of ‘Oban Whisky’(circa 1790) as we enjoyed a tour, just before dinner. Since we’re not whisky drinkers, the ‘New Bay’ version had a nice hint of honey. Of course, the guide wanted to convert us all to favor the malt whisky. Saturday was intended ... read more

After taking the red-eye flight to Edinburgh, we took in a lot for the first day in this wonderfully quaint town, which became the capital of Scotland in the 15th C. Needless to say, we’re slowly recovering from jet lag. On Wed, we checked into our centrally located ‘home-hotel’ for 2 nights, the modernized Scotsman Hotel. This was the former headquarters for the Scotsman newspaper for about 115 yrs, with a lot of the original features restored. Then it was off to tour the city via the hop-on hop-off City sightseeing bus, giving us a feeling of this amazing city. Dinner was at the Beer garden at the Beehive Inn on the historic Grassmarket Rd. The Castle of Edinburgh is located above the row of taverns Excited to see a couple of bagpipers and street entertainers ... read more

This is our intended driving route to our destinations and area discoveries. Edinburgh (2 nights) Oban area (2 nights) Isle of Skye near Portree (3 nights) Mystery night (1 night) We like to wing-it and we also seem to find a charming place to stay. This will be someplace between Isle of Skye and St. Andrews. This leg of the trip might be open for rerouting. Edinburgh (1night) ... read more

Max and I will always have fond memories of this amazing province with their rich history, loyalty to family history, friendliness, native foods, arts/music to name a few. The geography is breathtaking and introduced to some ‘obscured’ locations and experiences. How many times will you be involved in the cheese making process, milk a goat, hike every day and be spoiled by local music and food. Atlas Obscura did a tremendous job and our group of 12 was a perfect combination. We truly will miss our travel mates and hope we may meet again. Try something ‘obscure’ in your life, we did! Until we meet again and thank you for traveling with us from afar. ... read more

We were sad to leave the amazing Bell Island with the fantastic local music, food, sights, and the friendliest people. Boarded the ferry early with a brown bag breakfast- Alfred and staff really took care of us. If you’re ever in the area, this is the place to visit and stay at the Grand Wabana Inn. Rain just about all day but that didn’t stop us for having lunch at Steve & Lisa’s off-the-grid homestead. On top of their hill Overlooking the Bay, we ate rabbit pizza, turkey pot pie, blueberry cobbler w/ custard ice cream and drank maple/blueberry mead. Thanks to their rabbits, goat milk, turkeys and garden. Then climbed in Jerome’s minibus, and traveled to small town museums, art shops and a community musical festival in Ferryland. This town is known for historic immigrant fishery dating ... read more

Another wonderful breakfast at the Inn. Belle island is known for their abundance of iron ore mines, which have been shut down for years, we toured one of them. A 45 min guided tour underground was so fascinating-known as the safest mine in N Am. People from all over the world came to work in the mines starting in 1902. Also, Germany bought a lot of it during WWII. Picked up our picnic lunch at the Inn, headed to the lighthouse area over looking the Bay/ ocean. Beautiful! Finally saw a whale’s tail. After lunch, went to th theatre in the mine. Locals performed in one of the mines.Another amazing dinner,3course as always. Great time with new friends, wine, beer and local musicians came to the Inn for a jam session. Such a charming time!... read more
