Krabi seems to come to life after sunset, I think possibly because it gets so hot in the afternoon. I decided to have just one more night before making my way across the border to the island of Penang in northern Malaysia. I went for a wander around 'Walking Street', which is a night market. It turned out to be a place where I could sample loads of local food, and the best I've had so far in Thailand. It was a mixture of rice, spices, veg combos and meat. And also seafood, which seems to be pretty cheap in this area. I only had a couple of weeks in Thailand and it seems I have picked some areas geared up for holiday makers, so happy to move on quickly. However, Krabi, despite being so close ... read more

I arrived at Phuket airport wondering if perhaps if I should have gone to the other side of the country instead because I was torn between heading to Phuket, Koh Phi Phi (P P Island) and Krabi or to the full moon party in Ko Pha Ngan, on the other side of the country. Whilst it's easy to get from one side to the other, I needed to choose what I was going to do and keep heading south towards the border with Malaysia. I can't do everything so have to choose and I want to allow time to stop off in Malaysia on the way to Singapore... Phuket airport is about 30kms /18 miles from Phuket town, towards the other end of the island. I had planned to simply get the airport bus to the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai February 13th 2011

Spending fourteen hours on a sleeper train just to go to Chiang Mai for two nights seems a bit extreme, especially since it's in the complete opposite direction to where I wanted to go, but it was worth allowing the time. The sleeper train itself was excellent. I opted for a second class four berth / two bunk compartment which apparently is 'acceptable by European standards'. The compartment started out as seating and not long after the train got going the man came around and prepared the bunks, made our beds for us and took our orders for the evening meal and breakfast. A curtain goes around the bed, so when you're inside with the curtain drawn, it's like a little tent... or like a little den you might have made when you were about 6 ... read more

I arrived from the bus ex the Cambodian border with three nights accomodation booked, just around the corner from the bedlam of Kaosan road to the edge of central Bangkok, a main meeting point in Southeast Asia for mainly backpackers. If your on a big trip around Southeast Asia or just around Thailand, there is no doubt that you have to stop here for a night or two! However, I arrived late with a banging headache, hot, needing lots of water, totally tierd and not really in the mood for changing hotels. The hotel room was shocking, so I abandoned it and found a better place just around the corner at the other end of Kaosan road. Funnyly enough, in the same hotel as two Australians I met on the bamboo train just a day before! ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Battambang February 9th 2011

I decided to cross the Cambodia / Thailand border by bus from Battembang to Bangkok, this only involved a bus to Poipet on the Cambodian side, a ten minute walk across no mans land and through Thai immigration and on to a minibus for six hours straight to Bangkok. This area of no mans land is known as the casino zone, I think because the usual rules do not apply to either country (not that there are many rules in Cambodia) so there are loads of casinos! It was full when I wanted to go so had an extra day in Battembang, a dusty town set on a river to the north west of Cambodia. There isn't much there except for a market and not many westerners, but there is the bamboo train. It's just a ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap February 3rd 2011

The bus journey to Siem Reap was an interesting one. Although I was secure in my own seat, the bus kept stopping for locals to hop on and hop off. I think it doubles as a bus services for the towns it passes through but there weren't enough seats for everybody, so from nowhere littles plastics stools appeared for people to sit on in the isles lol... it was funny... but he was driving pretty close to the edge sometimes... Siem Reap is a small town to the North of Cambodia. It provides a base for a visit to the Temples of Angkor and as a result there is a hotels, bars and resturants district for people to entertain themselves in the evening, this is a buzzy area that revolves around 'Pub Street' and you'd never ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh February 2nd 2011

One of the things I love about backpacking around in this way, other than seeing the countries themselves, is meeting people along the way. I meet local people but I might also meet others from around the world having their big trips. It's great to do stuff with people I've just met, but it's possible that we meet again futher down the line, if we have similar plans. Much time is spent in internet cafes keeping in touch, cordinating plans and establishing where we all are in relation to each other. Some of the people I have met are doing similar trips to me so it's a good opportunity to compare notes on where we've been or to find out what might be in store further down the line. Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta January 30th 2011

After staying in Vietnam for a bit longer than anticipated I still hadn't done the Mekong Delta. I decide that perhaps a faster way to do this and get to Cambodia would be to do a tour. I found a two day tour that could show me around the area, get me across the border and finish in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Whilst this was a two day tour, I was the only one doing it so they combined my tour with the one day tour, which returned everyone else to Ho Chi Minh City in the middle of the afternoon on day one. I had my own tour guide for the rest of the first day which finished at Chau Doc, close to the border on the Vietnam side and for a couple ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City January 26th 2011

The biggest city in Vietnam is Ho Chi Minh City, formally Saigon. It provided the base for visits to the Cu Chi tunnels, Mekong Delta and the War Remnants Museum before moving on to Cambodia. Some people say that Saigon is busier than Hanoi, but as far as I can tell, Hanoi is much more closed in and not as westernised. Hanoi is my preference of the two. On our first day in Saigon, we thought we had arrived at the War Remnants Museum because there were tanks and a fighter plane outside. We paid our entry fee and went in. Once we got in we found that we went to the wrong place... We had in fact gone to the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group Partnership Meeting lol.. We made a quick exit! Upon eventual ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast January 23rd 2011

The next stop south along the Vietnamese coast was Hue, pronounced 'H Way'. The experience getting there on the over night sleeper train for 12 hours was moderately ok. The four bunk 'soft sleeper' compartments had sold out leaving only the three level six sleeper hard sleepers. I opted for the bottom bunk which was the best of what was left. But twelve hours on a 600KM train journey for about GB20.00/USD30.00 Isn't bad, I guess?!?! Hue, itself wasn't a particular tourist spot, although the beer and food in the western / hotel area is more expensive. It was more westernised here than in Hanoi but the only thing here particularly worth seeing is the Citadel, a former imperial city. It was heavily bombed during the Vietnam war by the Americans and they are still doing ... read more
