Wednesday 29th December 2010: Travel day. So we flew from Washington DC to Powell River, while we were in Vancouver we had a yummy lunch at a pub recommended to us by Paul. We were lucky that the bad weather didn’t affect our travels, though there was a lot of snow on the ground when we landed in Minneapolis for one of our stop overs! So we arrived in Powell River and were greeted by Paul, Brett’s old boss from London. We ate a quick dinner and went to watch the mighty Kings win their hockey match (though missing out on 6 goals and the first period because the game started earlier than we thought). Then it was off to bed for a well deserved sleep. Thursday 30th December 2010: Brettie’s birthday! Brettie got a book ... read more

Putz! Moron! The cinematic delights of Grumpiest Old Men entertained (figuratively speaking) us on the bus journey from Philly to Washington DC, helping the journey to speed by. My focus wandered between the small screen and the scenery passing us by. We stopped along the way in The Wire territory – Baltimore, Maryland. We were considering travelling up here from Washington one day but after our quick stop, neither of us was overly enthused about returning. Pretty grim and best that The Wire maintains our illusion of ‘grandeur’, so to speak. Washington was only a short hop, skip and a jump away – jumped on the subway and then had a short (always seems much longer with 20 odd kilos on the back) trek to our hostel. Keen to get a glimpse of Obama (pretty sure ... read more

I just wanted to add something to Brett’s Boston blog, we left Toronto and were travelling somewhere in the U.S., in the middle of the night, I woke up, looked outside and saw that it was snowing pretty heavily, snow on the road and the bus was fish tailing along the road, freaked me out, I just went back to sleep and pretended that it never happened – denial – I have come to conclude is my favourite friend! So we left Boston on Sunday morning, not happy about being awake early on a Sunday morning, but thems the breaks! We caught the bus to Philadelphia, via New York. We drove into Manhattan, changed buses and drove straight back out again. Being there made us want to stay in New York of course! So we arrived ... read more

The clean up was relatively painless – scavenging at such a high standard by Ms Biggs and able assistance by Pete (transporting our bags and thus saving our backs) made our last day or two in TO go without a hitch. Hospitality was laid out on a plate to us by Sarah and Pete (and I couldn’t go on without mentioning the ever so cute Inara) and we spent our last few hours watching Shrek, eating pizza and being entertained by Inara. Twas soon time to depart – we were dropped off by Pete (big thanks) and met up with Xtreme aka Ash. A last minute fill of that btch (said very affectionately!), a hug and we were off. No sleep for me on the way to Buffalo but Zoe managed a bit. Customs was relatively ... read more

The adventure is only two weeks away now. The countdown at the moment is really in relation to the 8 more days of employment.....soon the countdown will consist of hours/minutes. Still trying to finish up last minute planning and getting the trip organised so very little of that has to be done while on the road. Writing this however makes me wish I could leave tomorrow! Boston I'm ready ;-) Here's the plan for the USA and Canada - first stops are along the US east coast, followed by a stint in BC visiting my old boss Paul, then it's down to check out the west coast of the States! ... read more

Friday night was Halloween party in our dress up stuff…if we hadn’t already discovered this, we were soon to realise that the Canadian’s go crazy over this holiday. I decided to run with the Aussie theme….Steve Irwin….the whole death thing….seemed appropriate at the time anyway. That wig looked horrendous (and was bloody itchy) but what really made it was the hand puppet croc. Zoe went as a biker’s hoe/slut/dodgy chick. I hope I don’t get into too much trouble for saying this but she pulled it off remarkably well!!! The night was topped off like all good nights in TO…..with a large hot dog from my dude on Bathurst and College…..great stuff that street meat. Sunday we did the whole pumpkin carving and had some Kiwi friends (those butches) over for Halloween themed pumpkin risotto and ... read more
