The smog hovered over Beijing as we approached terra firma and there was to be no panoramic view of the city from above. Post landing, we walked for what seemed an eternity to get our bags but they eventually came and we were on our way. The subway into the city was fairly easy to navigate – courtesy of Beijing 2008, everything was in English. After arriving at Hepingmen station we trudged with our heavy packs (not much more of this to go) and found our accommodation. We thought we were staying in a hostel but it ended up being more like a hotel. Can’t complain. In need of a snack we popped across the road to a little shop where the owners slept inside. The only reason this trip is of interest here is because ... read more

Asia » China » Shaanxi » Xi'an May 9th 2011

So we left Guangzhou by plane, arrived late afternoon and checked into our hostel. We went for a wander around Xi’an, got some supplies and then headed back to the hostel for some pizza for dinner. After our free beer, well Brett’s two free beers, we played cards with a couple of people from France who were travelling for twelve months – how jealous was I. Then it was time for bed, we needed to be fit and awake for the Terracotta Warriors the next day! So we decided to go on a tour put on by our hostel to the Terracotta Warriors. We were picked up from the hostel and then taken out to the tomb. So for those of you who don’t know much about the Terracotta Warriors, I’ll try and explain a little ... read more

Destination China began before we even landed. Our predominantly Chinese populated flights from Mumbai to KL and KL to Guangzhou certainly gave us an introduction to just how loud the Chinese people seem to be. Talking seems to consist of not calm and measured speech but outright shouting at one another, regardless of whether the intended recipient is close or not. The flights all in all were relatively painless however – the need for sleep outweighed the noise level. KL was a nice stopover destination also, essentially because they had a little rest area with big comfy seats and, more importantly, the Blue Jays were playing the Yankees on the box. Finally arriving in China, immigration was not a hassle although we got the expected stern welcome. The cabs were pretty easy to find (English signs ... read more

Asia » India » Maharashtra » Mumbai » Bandra April 19th 2011

So this blog won’t really have much writing, but I’ve put up a lot of photos because it’s all about the food!!!! For Nerida’s birthday she had planned a Food Safari, which basically meant going to her choice of favourite restaurants and eating, eating, eating….The list of restaurants kept growing and I think the Food Safari lasted from the day we arrived in Mumbai until the day we left. Brett and I had lost weight during our travels in India because we managed to get sick every couple of weeks, but after our three weeks in Mumbai we have put on all the weight we’d lost and then some! We had a great time relaxing in Mumbai hanging out with Nezzi and Khaliq, seeing the sights of Mumbai as we went. Eating lots of food, riding ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Gokarna April 19th 2011

So after spending a long day on numerous modes of public transport getting to Gokarna we finally made it to our accommodation at Om Beach. We spent the rest of the day on the beach and at the restaurant before heading to bed. We woke up in the morning and although we had been sleeping under a mosquito net we were attacked by mosquitoes. I claim that mosquitoes have evolved to not make that annoying buzzing sound so they can attack you in stealth. So Nezzi and Khaliq had finally arrived in the middle of the night although we had to wait until lunch time for them to wake up! We spent the day relaxing, playing cards (uno and skip-bo), walking on the beach and eating of course! We then arranged to get up early the ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Hampi March 30th 2011

Our arrival into Hampi (Hospet train station) brought with it the expected result that we’d become accustomed to upon getting to any touristy destination – touts! One spotted us before we had even got off the train and started the chatter soon after we got off. We dumped our bags and thankfully, the refusal to engage the tout whatsoever concluded in him leaving us in relative peace. I went searching for a rickshaw (he was there again) and then went and grabbed Zoe who’d stayed with the bags. The rickshaw drivers all seemed more intent on sitting around and chatting and didn’t seem overly inclined to make a deal. Tout to the rescue – our aforementioned friend came to the rescue and took us up to the bus stand for a half decent fee (despite trying ... read more

After an uneventful night on the train we arrived in Chennai early in the morning. I got a bit of culture shock returning to a big city and seeing the intense poverty and pollution of Chennai. We checked into our hotel and ate our share of some dodgy Indian style Western food we decided to do some exploring of the city. We walked to Chepauk Stadium and collected our cricket tickets then jumped on the train to go to Kapaleeshwarar Temple. The temple was very impressive with a lot of colour and movement going on. We then wandered to San Thome Cathedral, which houses the tomb of St Thomas, one of the twelve apostles. We then walked down to the beach which was apparently hit hard in the 2004 tsunami. With everything going on in Japan, ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Kochi March 25th 2011

While we hadn’t been on a boat, Kochi represented dry land. After missing our stop initially in Ernakulam and then getting back there 4 or so hours later, I for one was happy to be able to stretch my legs (even if it did mean lugging the backpack around). We found a pre paid auto stand and separated from Ilaria and Vincenzo (Italian’s we had travelled with from Kannur, having met them at Costa Malabari). 153 rupees and a bumpy 10km journey later, we eventually found our accommodation in Fort Cochin, Green Woods Bethlehem. We were gleefully welcomed by our gracious hosts Sheeba and Ashley – just as the Lonely Planet had suggested we would be. A chai each later and we settled into our room. The settling in process did involve some sort of creature ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Kannur March 22nd 2011

We got up early to get the bus to Kannur. Suneer took us to the bus station and made sure that we got on the right bus. 5 ½ hours on the bus, included on this trip were 5 hair pin turns (I know this because they were sign posted). I’ve never seen an Indian bus driver be that cautious or a bus load of Indian people be that silent, it was a good thing that he was being cautious because if he hadn’t been we would have driven off the side of a very high mountain. We arrived in Kannur safe and sound and took an auto out to our accommodation Costa Malabari recommended by Nicola. We arrived in time for lunch and a delicious fruit salad. All of our meals were included this gave ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Wayanad March 18th 2011

We arrived in Sultan Batheri after 4 hours on the bus driving through what we now know to be coffee plantations. An auto ride to our hotel and then dramas – Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is closed – it closed the day before we arrived and our hotel forgot to let us know. It took us a little while to figure out why it was closed, but we finally found out that there is a lot of bamboo growing in Wayanad and every 30 – 40 years or so, the bamboo dries out and dies, this leaves a huge fire danger risk, so they decided to close the sanctuary for a month.…Brettie was a little cross and I was pretty disappointed. We had come here in the hope of seeing some wild elephants. We decided to leave ... read more
