Our task when we arrived was to find how we could catch a bus from Coimbatore to Ooty – our chosen destination high up in the hills of the Western Ghats. I walked about a bit while Zoe guarded the bags and found out we needed to make our way to the new bus stand – we fought with rickshaw drivers for a while to get a decent fare and eventually caved as it was way to early to struggle too hard over what was effectively 25 cents. Out at the bus destination we were thankful to find a bus waiting for us to jump on. And the fare at Rs60 for the both of us to get to Ooty was cheaper than the bloody rickshaw ride to the bus stand which was Rs90. Settled into ... read more

Another night, another train. Zoe and I are starting to get fairly acquainted with platforms, train numbers and oh…the staring. We left Jaisalmer close to midnight and had a pretty short journey to Jodhpur. We got in at the crack of dawn (literally) and stood about for an hour or so waiting for our connection. All aboard again, we discovered we had an AC2 compartment of four berths to ourselves. This helped us get some more sleep and make the time pass on the way to Ahmedabad, our next destination. The trip was largely uneventful – cards, cards, nap, mouse (our feet stayed up for a while), arrival. After rolling in past Ghandi’s ashram at Sabarmati, the first thing we noticed about Ahmedabad (or at least the train station) was the stench of urine – one ... read more

So we arrived in Jaisalmer at 5.30am, slept on the train, gotta love sleeper berths! We were picked up by Karim, one of the employees of the hotel we stayed at called Desert Moon. There was a lot of water on the ground and Karim said that it had rained during the day, rain in a desert, who knew. He showed us to our rooms and off to bed we went for another 3 hours sleep, hooray! We woke up for breakfast and it felt like we’d been in Jaisalmer for a night already. We wandered into Jaisalmer Fort which is apparently under threat of being eroded by the water being used by the inhabitants of the fort. We did a tour of Maharaja’s Palace – there is a lot of restoration being undertaken here to ... read more

Well we can safely cross off catching a bus in India from our list and look forward to not doing it for some time. Our 6 hour bus ride from Udaipur to Jodhpur, turned into just under 8 hours and was the most bumpy bus ride I think I’ve ever had. Brett had an egg on his head from where he bumped it on the roof and I had a sore neck from all of the jolting around. For a main road it was pretty shitty….I was even wishing that I was back on a Greyhound bus skidding along a snowy road somewhere in the US….well maybe not. So Jodhpur, our accommodation was lovely, with views of the city and the fort, we still weren’t feeling the best, so we had an early dinner and early ... read more

Before touching down in charismatic India we had a brief stopover in London. Clearing customs after some initial doubt that they might chain us to the terminal, we brought our Oyster cards back to life and got the tube to South Kensington. We had little trouble in locating a pub to bunker down in and then hung out with Marian, George, Jane, Jatinder (all old work people) and Schillo from back home. A few pints later and it was time to head back to Heathrow – great to catch up. The short sojourn only encouraged Zoe’s desire to move back to London! Eight or so hours later and we hit the tarmac in India. Our bags eventually arrived and we were greeted outside by Nerida – Zoe’s sister. It was great to see her – Zoe ... read more

Our quote of the day and possibly the week is “so lets fight about it”. This is when we realise that we are starting an irrelevant argument with the other person. I’m trying to think of a new way to start off my blog entries, other than “So we then…” but it’s not been too successful and after not getting that much sleep last night, I can’t think of anything better to say, so tough….Anyway as Brett will tell you and I’ll concur with him, I get irritable and not very nice to be around when I haven’t had my 10 hours of sleep at night. So we spent last night on a bus from L.A. to San Francisco, waking up in the middle of the trip to see the bus driver hooning it while she ... read more

Our bus trip into downtown LA was marked by bumpy bounces (go figure) and sore heads. The amount of potholes in this city didn’t augur well especially at 5am in the morning. We somehow negotiated the streets and jumped on a local bus that took us pretty close to our hostel. We were literally zombies carrying big heavy backpacks but we found our hostel soon after. To our delight, we walked into the hostel and it was ghost town central – what we were doing here! There was a dude passed out on the bean bag as we walked in who subsequently turned out to be our check in man. We dumped our bags and continued the zombie strut as we weren’t able to check in for a few hours. Starbucks answered the call and we ... read more

So we collected our car at Las Vegas airport and started driving out to the Grand Canyon – it took us about four and a half hours to get there. We drove past Hoover Dam, which Brett and I think is famous for some reason – possibly it’s the architecture of the dam?!?!? Then we drove into the Grand Canyon National Park, free entry because of National Park Day, or something – it saved us $25, so we were happy. Then we found our accommodation – which was on the rim of the South Canyon! We dumped our stuff and headed out to explore the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon has two visitor points, the South Rim, where we were staying and the North Rim, which was about 10 miles away from us as the crow ... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas January 25th 2011

So we arrived in Las Vegas at night, flying over the city was pretty cool, lots of fluro lights going on. We landed, collected our bags and caught a shuttle bus to our hotel, the Imperial Palace, cheapest one my travel agent Brettie could find, but I have to say that I was impressed. Nice big bed and our own toilet and shower! YAY! Even our own balcony and T.V. It was a little bit of a shock walking into our hotel and seeing the casino, poker machines, blackjack tables, etc in our hotel lobby. Massive as it was it was even more of a shock to see people sitting there smoking in the casino, I thought the U.S. was a little more up with the times, clearly I was wrong. So we went downstairs to ... read more

Unloading from the ferry, we wound our way along the jagged cliffs of North/West Vancouver, drove over the bridge (the name escapes me) that splits Stanley Park and landed at Central Station. A short skytrain ride later and we were in the city – thankfully we only had to lug our backpacks four blocks (they’re not getting any lighter). Checked in, we got in the lift which stopped half way up and into the lift walked our mate Richard – small world. We went for a stroll soon after and then quickly found a pub for a refreshing ale and poutine snack. Richard had some inside knowledge of a good place for dinner and we made our way down to Gastown (past the ‘memorable’ steam clock) to the 6 Acres. A good feed later washed down ... read more
