Varanassi is probably the most bizarre place I have ever visited. Apparently it is one of the most holy places in the world, probably because the average person would drop dead after drinking holy water from the Ganges, providing a short cut to the grave! We have just spent the morning floating down the Ganges in a rowing boat while witnessing some of the most insane sights that I am still struggling to comprehend. While floating down stream we would pass a local going to the toilet in the river followed by someone drinking from the same water. A little further, and someone would be cleaning their clothes next to a sewage outlet while his friend lathered up in soap and jumped into the river. We would watch in amazement while dead goats and cows would ... read more

I should have known today was going to be one of those insane days when Bollywood came bashing on our door at 6:00am. We had agreed to be extras in a Bollywood movie the night before, but forgot we had booked our train to Varanasi. We refused to answer when a lunatic began bashing on the door and shouting at us to get out of bed. Hay, it’s not everyday you get to piss off Bollywood! Anyone would have thought we were leading actors judging by the way it all kicked off. A great start to the day! We spent the day on Elephant Island. It was a complete rip off. The boat was supposed to only take 20 minutes. It took a couple of hours. Once there we had no choice but to pay Foreigner ... read more

Mumbai Madness

We have left Alleppey after traveling around the Indian Backwaters on a thatched house boat. We spent our time floating down the small rivers watching the basic way of life on the river banks. I got to steer the house boat across the largest lake in the Indian state of Kerala. The Indian Backwaters are extremely peaceful and beautiful in contrast to the rest of India. Unfortunately because of the trouble in Tibet and the elections in Nepal we have been told by the British Embassy not to go into the countries since the entire region has become dangerously unstable. This has caused us major headaches in re-organizing our trip into China since we can not pass overland invalidating out visas. In addition to our Nepal/Tibet problems, since arriving in Mumbai we have been hit by ... read more

Big Trouble In Little Varkala

We have arrived at the cliff side hippy/backpacker hideaway known as Varkala. All of the shops, bars and accommodation line the edge of the cliffs surrounding a secluded beach. There is more Bob Marley bars than you can poke a stick at and every step you take along the cliff edge is followed by the words "hashish, hashish" fading into the distance. Most of the locals wonder around stoned, mixed in with a very chilled out vibe and dreadlock type travelers swinging in hammocks hanging from coconut trees. If it wasn’t for the events of last night I would say this is probably the best beach resort we have seen in India, but to be honest the beaches in India are not all that and we didn’t come to India to find beach resorts. Last night ... read more

After another 24 hour train journey traveling from Mysore to Kanniyakumari via Bangalore I was yet again climbing the walls of the train. Complete boredom is the only words I can use to describe the long train journeys we endure... and for what? to see yet more mayhem in another part of India! Is it worth the effort .. Probably not, but we keep pushing on to try and find the real India advertised in those glossy magazines. We left Mysore (eye sore!) very disappointed. Apparently it is supposed to be the next big IT centre following Bangalore. I still can't imagine it to be true. The place is a shit hole and the fastest internet connection I could find ran at 128kbps. Again everyone tries to rip you off and you have to suffer constant ... read more

The Insanity Of Indian Transport

I can't help but laugh at the insanity of Indian transport. Following our lengthy train journey from Agra to Goa (36.5 hours) we decided to try the bus. Thinking a sleeper bus with air con sounded rather comfortable we booked through a reputable travel agent for a trip from Goa to Hampi (about 9 hours) with the thought of National Express in our minds. Our thoughts couldn’t have been further from reality - we should have known better! The clapped out bus arrived a couple of hour’s late (India time) and boarding the bus was complete chaos. Only in India could seat numbers cause so much confusion. In the end we just sat where they put us, and as you can imagine there was no air con or toilet. Actually there were no seats. We were ... read more

After visiting the Taj Mahal we got caught up in yet another scam and ended up boarding the Goa Express Mail Train from Agra to Goa. We had paid for the fast train which was estimated at 22 hours, but it took us a staggering 36.5 hours. Although we had a decent bunk, I was climbing the walls by the time we reached Goa. We were exhausted, so I crashed out and slept most of the first day in Goa. We spent 5 days in Goa, most of which was spent on the toilet with food poisoning. Goa has got a nice chilled out atmosphere but has nothing on the beaches of Thailand. To be honest, I was a little disappointed; probably from the hype I had been lead to believe. On Palolem beach, it is ... read more

We have just had the most surreal couple of days. Last night we went on an evening safari to try and find some Tigers in the Ranthambhore jungle. In typical Indian style, as soon as we entered the jungle our jeep broke down with a split tyre. The driver spent over an hour trying to repair the wheel before we were on our way! During that time there was a nervous silence while the jeep was repaired. Unfortunately we didn’t see anything that evening but we were just relieved we didn’t end up as dinner. The following morning we spent over an hour following a 2 year old female Tiger. She was a beautiful animal. It was the most surreal experience that I would recommend to anyone. Our guide told us there is 10% chance of ... read more

The Elephant Festival initially looked like an organized event which quickly turned into chaos with locals and tourists walking in-between Elephants and the band, eventually blocking the procession. It was fantastic to watch lots of elephants painted up in different colours strolling around a stadium, but the lack of control made the event insane, with a few angry looking elephants about ready to mow down anyone in their way. Later that night the locals lit bonfires on every street corner adding to the intoxicating pollution of India, making Jaipur look like a war zone. Drunk locals ran amuck and all madness broke lose! The Festival of Colour was probably the most bizarre event I have seen. Words can’t describe the insanity of the day. At about 6am I climbed out of bed and wondered into the ... read more

Something is wrong and you know you are in trouble! Your stomach begins to ache and you feel like your bowls are going to explode. A bubble of air escapes between your cheeks filling the car with death. You beg the driver to stop while you leap from the vehicle and run towards the nearest bush. In a blind panic your shorts hit the dusty ground leaving you completely exposed. You assume the Indian crouching position and pray for the pain to stop. With one final breath you hold your stomach and let loose. Sweat pours down your face as you wonder how it has come to this. For a brief moment it suddenly dawns upon you - you were poisoned by the big spoon! On our last evening in Kumbalgarh the hotel provided us with ... read more
