The Lotus Center, conveniently located at the coroner of one of those intersections, is the equivalent of the American Wal-Mart. The store consists of three separate floors. First floor is used by individual retailers and other separate little shops. Simple stuff like a T-Shirt shop or purses or other stuff that will definitely sell better if it is a store and not being sold off the streets. The second floor consists of all the regular household appliances that you might find at a Wal-Mart from electrical fans, flashlights, and towels to sports equipment. The three most popular sports items are ping pong paddles, bad mitten rackets, and basketballs. Onto the third floor you find the grocery store. All the floors are separated by these escalators. Walking down the streets of Beijing is almost as entertaining as walking through the Forbidden City. Best way to describe an intersection is as one big cluster f***. So you have three fundamental things, people on foot, people on bikes/motor bikes, and then the people in cars/taxis/buses. Although they generally remain separate on the streets and sidewalks at an intersection it all just comes together to form a congested and reckless area without almost any regards for traffic lights and rules. In America it’s like people are always trying to stay clear of the cars but here it seems that cars are having to avoid the people. Arriving in a city as large and as important as Beijing can cause both erroneous difficulties and an incredible sense of excitement. For the record while flying in the Great Wall can be witnessed from an airplane at 10,000 ft but I’m still not sold about the theory from the moon. The health inspection on the airplane was far more serious than I imagined. The inspectors came in with full body suits, goggles, and the whole works to take everybody’s temperature before getting off. Even once again in the terminal every airport official wore protective masks and what not. Riding in the Subway system from the airport to the Hostel was impressive.
