"'It is easier for a person to conquer everything else than to conquer oneself.' At first I thought I had found a truth, but when I looked behind the notion, I saw that it was only its utter falseness that gave it any semblance of truth" These are the kind of thoughts one can achieve through the laser focus one has while going 9 miles down an icy 7% grade Rocky Mountain pass, in -5° weather with no heat... read more

Editors note: I will add previous entries, but long entries don't work on phone, and my laptop is retarded. My sister in law had warned me not to just pull over anywhere in the south, but I had run out of steam quickly. And when I took the next exit and saw no gas stations or anything, I just parked in the on ramp. As I crawled into my bed, I decided out of exhausted frustration that I would just tell anyone that bothered me that I didn't feel safe driving any further, even if there was a rest stop just a mile down the road. And that's exactly what I told the police officer when he woke me up an hour later. And, after searching my car for drugs, he told me there was in ... read more

Mon, Nov 10th- For my drive from San Francisco to L.A., muthafuckin crazy castles. Yesterday, I toured the Winchester mansion. 160 rooms of early century crazy, executed with 24-7 carpenter support. The story goes that Sarah Winchester felt, due to her husband and only child passing away suddenly, that she was haunted by the victims of the Winchester rifle, and the only way to escape or appease them was to build a maze-like house, and continue building until the end of her life, which would also be prolonged by the building process. The story also goes that the mansion was laid out like that, with doors and stairs to nowhere, because Sarah weas in no way trained as an architect. I thing the truth lies somewhere in between. Layout aside, it is a lovely Victorian mansion. ... read more

Sat, Nov 9- Is this road trip supposed to have a theme, or a lesson, or a moral? Am I trying to get anything out of this? What kind of stuff am I hoping to see while I travel? What is this blog supposed to be providing to you or me? This early in the trip, there seems to be a noticeable undercurrent of the organic side of history. There is the history one can read about in books or on displays in museums, but it has a different element when you are listening to someone tell their story. It was different when I heard veterans telling their stories of WWII, and when I ditched the Spruce Goose talking points speech to hear a crotchety engineer talk about how the movies were wrong, based on what ... read more

Nov 7th, Day 2: Gonna drive on through, with a brief stop at the prehistoric gardens, and get back on schedule for... what, a petting zoo with a baby tiger? Hell yeah. I'll even wait a half hour until you open. For such a small personal zoo, they had quite a bit of space and animals. But it was nice to see the staff have personal relationships with all the animals. The lioness and tigress were very playful, playing hide and seek behind rocks and logs. I checked, they were being playful, not hunting me. Not that it couldn't be both. The baby bears were nice and playful, but at one year old they were already way too big to play with humans. The three cats I got to pet, a tiger, a bobcat, and a ... read more

Nov 5th, Day 0.5: My intention was to drive to Portland and then down to the coast. Before leaving, I had consulted Roadside America to an extensive extent. So, as I made my way down to the coast, I came up on McMinnville, and vaguely recognized the name. There is something to see in McMinnville... I drive through, and on the left is an airport, that rings a bell. Then, on the right, illuminated in the night, is a giant Jet Airliner. Giant plane... oh, right. IT is here. I glance to the right just a bit, and can see it in a hanger, The Spruce Goose. Half mile in from the road, on the other side of a jetliner, and it is still huge. I really should see it, but it's closed for the night, ... read more

Editor's Note:Whoops. I have greatly overestimated the capability of my netbook and smartphone. I will need to make some adjustments, by which I mean coffee shops. Also, my smartphone will not do GPS without a WiFi connection, supposedly, so things might get interesting.I'm not too worried about getting lost or not being able to find things, there are maps and road signs. Always have been.... read more

Day 0: I built a cot into the Festiva; I could tell people I will only use it in emergencies, but if you're reading this you know I'm going to use it at every opportunity. I would like to thank Buphalo for the idea and the insistence that I implement it, and thank Micah, Dane and Kathy for the emotional, intellectual, and physical support necessary to get my compact RV on the road.... read more
