It's been tough to get adequate internet access in India to post a new blog entry, and I apologize to all our readers who are eager to hear about our new adventures. This entry is old, summing up our time in our first three stops, but it's all I have for now and I've been trying to upload it onto a public terminal for over a week now. The owners of the internet cafes don't allow USB memory keys to be plugged into their computers, so I had to be sneaky and James Bond like in getting this entry and pictures uploaded. Fitting, since we are in Udaipur at the moment, and the movie Octopussy was filmed here. It's not hard to forget either, seeing as every budget restaurant in the city plays the movie nightly. ... read more

Full Moon Madness

Strange behavoir has a reputation for occuring during the full moon. There is certainly no exception on this small island in the Gulf of Thailand. Every full moon on Koh Phangan backpackers from all corners congregate to participate in the largest party in all of SE Asia, the Full Moon Party. It's somewhat of a legend among backpackers, the chaos that takes place on a small stretch of beach called Had Rin. Fueled by the infamous "bucket" people let loose and get wild. If you're unsure of what a "bucket" is, let me explain. Take one child's sand bucket, fill with a ridiculous amount of Thai whiskey called Sang Som, one can of coke, ice and a Red Bull and initiate absolute recklessness. Get one of these things in you and your night is sure to ... read more

Being a Canadian in Thailand we are granted a 30 day visa free period. When this 30 days ends, you can hop over the border at any of the neighboring countries and re-enter, and be given another 30 day stamp in your passport. There are restrictions though, and you can only stay a maximum of 90 days in a 180 day period. Well, our 2nd round of 30 days was coming to and end and we needed to renew our stamps before our friends Kim and Andrew arrived from home. Tourist offices are everywhere in Thailand, offering any combination of tickets to get you where you want to go. Visa runs are no exception, and from Phuket the popular place to go is into Burma. This requires a painfully long day of traveling. The bus picked ... read more

As is the norm lately, I apologize for the lack of blog entries. Life has been interesting and busy on this side of the world, not leaving much time for typing. Here is what we’ve been up to… From January 22-28 we booked ourselves onto a diving liveaboard boat in the Similan Islands. What this basically means is that you have a cabin on the boat, which is somewhat like a floating hotel. You never get off the boat, except to get into the water to dive. To us, this was a slice of heaven for 7 days. It definitely required a lot of effort each day, and I’ll never go so far as to say it was easy, but it rewarded us with the most spectacular diving we’ve experienced thus far and gave us a ... read more

True Island Paradise. No cars, no scooters, just palm trees waving in the breeze, waves crashing on the shore and the occasional "BEEP BEEP!" as a troupe of Thai's hurry past pushing a cart full of luggage from the newly arrived passengers. Welcome to Phi Phi. As I mentioned in the previous blog, we were kind to ourselves and opted to fly out of Singapore and back to Phuket. Singapore has one of the world’s best airports, so we figured it would be an injustice to not see it. Unfortunately since we flew Tiger Airways, Singapore’s discount carrier, we flew out of the “Budget” Terminal and didn’t actually get to see the other terminals (which I imagine contain the “worlds best” stuff, since our terminal was, as the name implies, rather budget). We set a New ... read more

Greetings! It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted a blog entry and for that I must apologize. To be honest I’ve been feeling less than inspired to pen anything about our adventures, or lack thereof. Devlin has been pestering me for a number of days to type something and post it, both for our reflection when we return home and your immediate reading enjoyment. So here we go. On December 27 we boarded an early bus to Singapore. 28 hours sounds like a long but manageable journey, until you are crammed onto a minibus with a broken curtain and the sun is blasting the window you are sitting next to around hour 5. All this on a mere 2.5 hour sleep the “night” before. From what we understood when we purchased the tickets it would ... read more

MERRY CHRISTMAS MERRY CHRISTMAS MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! To be honest, it's kind of a blue Christmas over here for us (and not just because the sky is perfect and without clouds). It was strange waking up this morning and not being at home with presents under the tree, eating breakfast with our families and enjoying the holiday spirit. It certainly has shown us that although Christmas can happen anywhere in the world, it's just not CHRISTMAS without your family, your traditions, and all that love surrounding you. All of you are definitely in our thoughts more than ever today. If we could port ourselves home instantly to spend today with you and then return we would in a heartbeat. Here are a few photos of what we have been up to in this tropical paradise. Visiting monkeys ... read more

We did it! We passed our Advanced Open Water certification today, and are mighty proud of ourselves. We now are official members of PADI, and can dive anywhere in the world to the maximum recommended recreational depth of 40m. Hooray! Today was an amazing adventure, and one I'm sure will stand out from the many made on this trip. We visited three different dive sites in the same area, all vastly different from each other. The first was King Cruiser, a passenger/car ferry which sunk in 1997 carrying 600 people. Don't worry, no one died here, and the unofficial story is that it was sunk on purpose as the insurance was due in 3 days and this is Thailand after all. This was our "deep" dive, and we descended to 30m. Some people experience "nitrogen narcosis" ... read more

I have to apologize about the lapse of entries, we’ve been keeping ourselves quite busy here in Patong. Unfortunately the hotel we chose was completely full so we were forced to find alternate accommodation. It didn’t work out too badly though, we found a small family run hotel 15 minutes from the beach for a great deal. Rates can skyrocket during the Christmas peak season, sometimes doubling or tripling at the larger resorts. This was by far the lowest price we came across, and the increase from Dec 20 onwards was not too much. Plus, we received a 10% discount since we were booking for so many nights (3 weeks). Like I mentioned, it’s not beachfront, to get to Patong Beach it’s a 15 minute walk down the street. All this means is that our hotel ... read more

Hello everyone! It's rather late here but I wanted to post a quick update to let you all know what is happening on our side of the planet... Shortly after the last entry we were researching train tickets, ready to book something for Dec 1 to Phuket. Well, can you believe train tickets were MORE expensive than flying?! The train, for two people, came out to ~$120 and if we waited until Tuesday Dec 5 we could fly to Krabi for $80. So, naturally we decided to tough it out in Bangkok for a few extra days and booked the flight to Krabi. Krabi is not far from Phuket, 3 hours on a cheap bus (we looked into bus tickets so that won't be a surprise). Since we extended our stay in the big city this ... read more
