The next days drive was a long one down to the Cornish coast, via Exeter to pick up George so we could take her back home to Norwich with us. We left the city early after buying the obligatory postcards and set off to our first stop, the mystical city of Glastonbury. My prime motive in seeing Glastonbury was as an alleged centre of paganism and magic since before Christianity. The National Trust managed the Glastonbury Tor, a large hill with a solitary tower on top, so we decided to take advantage of our NT membership (that thing just paid for itself) and have a look. Getting to Glastonbury proved to be the difficult part, every road we turned up seemed to head in the opposite direction and all the roads heading towards it were ... read more

The next morning we woke up early to get the days drive out of the way. We drove into Ambelside to get some Beatrix Potter related presents for people, it is a sweet little town much ruined by the tourist hoards that we saw queuing up for miles to get on on our way out. We felt very relieved for having missed them. That day we drove down to Stratford upon Avon in the Cotswolds, arriving in Warwick mid afternoon. The town was busy, things seem to heat up along with the weather at around 2-3pm in England and so tourists and locals were crawling all over the streets by the time we arrived. We parked a short way out of town in a field and walked over a bridge offering a splendid view of ... read more

After our first night at Roy Bridge we headed out the next day to Fort William to enquire about ferry timetables for an excursion to the Isles the next day and to see what we could do that day. Whilst there we got some pies and sausage rolls from the bakery and headed to Old Inverlochy castle to eat our early lunch. They were very bad, I pity the British having to eat bad pastries when everyone else in the world seems to have figured out how to make them properly. Sitting by the river eating our bad pastries, the sun was beautifully warm, the air was crisp, clear and sparkling and the mountains were capped with pure white snow. It was deceiving to look at the mountains in this setting, mountains that take experienced ... read more

The countryside once crossing the border was fairly English in nature, fields, villages and streams. Yet on approaching the city from the south, isolated mountains began to appear. Stu once again intuitively navigated us into the city centre and we walked from our car up Cockburn Street with our heavy pack. It was still quite cold in Edinburgh so we had to don gloves, hats and scarves for the walk however these soon came off as the street was a very steep one, the recovering smoker and the lazy university student had a bit of a struggle. Our room was across the street from the hostel in an apartment building so after climbing the stairs to the top storey we dumped our gear and headed back out to explore. We turned right at the top ... read more

For the fortnight the skies have alternated between black, grey and blue in rapid succession, rather akin to Melbourne’s weather patterns. Apparently the drought has now broken and everyone is very relieved that the rains are finally here. I have now been on holidays for nearly two weeks and it has taken me this long to get over my essay induced fatigue to be able to bear to sit down and write something. The last month and a half has flown past; it is difficult to believe that I will be home in Australia in only one month as the past five have gone so slowly, it feels as though I have been here for a much longer time. I started ... read more

Sorry for the lack of chronological order here guys, I intended to get this posted before the London blog but I have been very busy with essays so it’s a bit out of whack. Our weekend in York was two weeks before London, just so you know. Meags, George and I had the opportunity to spend the weekend in York with George’s flatmate, Ali and her family. So taking advantage of this, we left Friday morning to the train station to start our day long journey north to the early medieval city of York. We dropped into Norwich on the way to the station picking up gifts for our host family and getting breakfast so by the time we caught the next bus, we had to wait for the 11:57 train. We travelled to our next ... read more

Today was a beautiful day. The sun shined as though it was happy to finally be warming the earth properly, the sky was a rich bright blue and the breeze was perfectly cool. I spent the day with my two wonderful friends Meags and George, having lunch with Meags and then meeting up with George to follow Meags while she did her washing. We went with a squishy cricket ball and threw the ball around in Earlham Park, doing cartwheels with no shoes on, laughing, rolling around in the grass. It was the sort of day where the sun makes you feel alive, as though you are a reptile relying on the warmth it provides. It made me appreciate the change in seasons that happens in England a lot more as I could see the effect ... read more

The weeks since my last blog have been busy and have flown past. Uni is becoming more involved as I attempt to keep up with the readings, prepare presentations and actually attend my classes. I haven’t missed one yet, but I guess that’s not difficult on only six hours a week. These last weeks have been fuelled by frequent visits to the chocolate shop (dangerous place), the fish and chip shop and Caley’s hot chocolate, none of which has any positive influence upon my health aside from making me happy. On a healthier note, I have begun what promises to be frequent patronage to the Spice Man in the marketplace in town. Meags was the first to reveal to me the wonders of this place, full on Hessian bags folded down , containing dried fruits and ... read more

I have had a very busy and exciting time over the last week seeing Norwich and starting uni again. I have gained an even further appreciation of the place and its history; I think the love I already have for the place will be difficult to get out of my system, this could be dangerous. My uni classes are very exciting, it’s so great to be learning history in the context that it was formed and from the people who it belongs to. There are a lot of young people here that are involved in their history which is very refreshing and so exciting. All of the friends I have made are very intelligent and interesting people so we have very interesting conversations at times (when we aren't trying to mimic each others accents). It is ... read more
