how do you measure a year? For us the year was measured through your eyes, blogs, phone calls and emails. Through your ups and downs, successes and not... Your accomplishments, your realized dreams and attained goals. Our hearts are pounding with the anticipation of your arrival tomorrow. We are busting our buttons, so to speak with all that you have done, accomplished but more importantly with who you are. It seems that we sent away a boy and truly have a man returning. We know there is so much more to these 10 months than were written in your blog and we know what it took to work through the struggles and turn them into triumphs. Bravo to you, our son, Bravo!
See ya on the 21st Interesting, very interesting. One of the things you were particularly interested in finding out was WWII from their perspective. Guess you found some answers.
Yasunkuni We also visited the memorial while in Tokyo with your Host Father. Similar sentiments from him to us. The festival was being set up and it was a carnival like atmosphere. The yellow lanterns are not the names of the deceased soldiers, but rather the names and sentiments of those who come there to visit the loved ones buried there. As with the rest of what we saw in Japan, such a mix of the old and new. Almost as if Japan does not know where to fit in. Interesting. xox mom
Going away party Emanuel I just finished reading your blog for the second time. It was so intriguing that I wanted to read it again.Hearing you sounding so happy, confident and fulfilled warmed my heaart. We are so proud of you.You have accomplished so much in the eleven months that you have been in Japan, not only academically, but you seem to have also acquired an appreciation of their culture, people and life in general. Again , let me say how proud we are of you as a person too.We love you very much and can'f wait to see you.Love Grams

circle this circle and your membership in it has contributed greatly to your blossoming in the Japanese culture. I am thrilled that you had the foresight to evaluate and join, regardless of the initial differences and difficulties with language, customs etc. Again, you made an excellent choice for yourself, and for them also. They have benefited greatly from you membership also.
ramen ok, so it escapes me how they eat all of these carbs and greasy stuff and still remain stick thin. I will have to chose carefully, not as adventerous as my son. xo
No Man is an Island I read an article recently about Japan continuing to be one of the few truly homogeneous populations remaining in the modern world. Sounds like you are experiencing both the wonder and the frustration of both sides of this coin. It is difficult to imagine as our culture is so diverse and heterogeneous - but a unique experience which will serve you well. Sending a kiss and a hug - "Mrs. Migliaccio". :)
More fantastic countside, and adventures! I want them to adopt me. They are amazing! Especially HM. A woman after ny own heart, 2 minutes, Coach, $500! what a woman. xo
Trees This looks beautiful. I used to love the cherry blossoms in DC in the Spring (they were a gift from the Japanese) and these are showy and fantastic. Happy Easter to you! Can you believe only 4 more months until you are home again? PS - NYC can be a bit of a death trap. . . xo Auntie M and Uncle Mark
under the sea! Wow, another indescribable adventure! Cant wait to see this on the "tourist" route! The writing and description was beyond belief. Felt like I was there.
KOREA glad you got a "taste" of Korea, just wish you had not got the food poisoning along with it. As usual your blog and descriptions could make for a travel brochure. Bravo!! love you, xo
Beer Hi Emanuel: Reading this during the SuperBowl and Uncle Mark wants you to know he loves a good Molson Canadian! Just back from New Hampshire from a great restaurant that had no less than 20 beers, some microbrews and regionals on tap. The North Country seems to have a strange affinity for homebrews and quality - when you get home I strongly recommend a trip to Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire. Keep smiling.
Eman, Uncle Ed and I just caught up with your amazing life in Japan!! We're so happy for you and for this unbelievable experience you are having. Thank you for sharing it with us, your blog is really something else! love you!!!
