Spending a year living in Darwin, Australia...!!!

Wowee. We're driving along through the flat flat desert and then it's sort of like bam! All of a sudden there's this huge giant beautiful rock in front of you. Uluru is the Aboriginal name for the rock that is also known as "Ayers Rock". Uluru is sacred to the Aboriginal people and is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Australia. People travel from across the globe to visit it. At one time you could climb it, and you still can if you really want to, but the Aboriginal people ask that you don't. So instead we did the beautiful 11km hike all around the base of the rock. There were many locations that were deemed especially sacred and there were signs asking that you refrain from taking photos, so we opted to not take ... read more

Mataranka was a pretty sweet camping spot. In the morning as Majeed prepared our morning coffee, he noticed a funny looking branch that turned out to be a Tawny Frogmouth bird! And his partner one branch up! They are these really amazing birds that become still as a branch, and look just like the branches except for their crimson red eyes. After sharing our discovery with fellow campers, who all came by to "ooh and aah", we headed out to the Mataranka natural hot springs. They weren't really hot, just warmer than you'd expect. We brought our snorkelling gear and did half of it face down and half of it floating with our heads out of the water. It was beautiful and cleansing. After walking back to the car and changing into our dry clothes, we ... read more

Gorges Springs

Published: July 26th 2012Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Katherine

Gorgeous is a word that Australians use to describe food, which is an expression I quite like. However today I'm talking about 'gorges', as in deep canyons. We hiked around Katherine Gorge -breathtaking- and bought Majeed a leather hat, so he totally looks like you imagine a dashingly handsome dark-haired Australian would look. We saw these totally awesome birds called "Great Bowerbird" doing their mating thing. The male birds makes these grassy doorways and throws all kind of materials in the doorways to attract the female. It's quite a show and we were very excited to be able to see it. Then we drove to Mattaranka Falls to find a campground and sleep the night. Tomorrow, Mattaranka natural hot springs. Scroll down for more photos!... read more

"Travelling in a fried out combie"…begins the song "From a Land Down Under" by Men at Work. That song has become our theme song. This morning we headed out on our wonderful Adventure Down Under. We plan to travel for just over five weeks through Australia, travelling south from Darwin, through the centre of the continent, stopping at several places including Uluru, one of the most famous landmarks in the world. We will head south all the way to Adelaide and then take the Great Ocean Road and head to Melbourne, Sydney and then Brisbane and the Great Barrier Reef, including all the little towns and beaches in between. Then we will go to New Zealand for three weeks, USA for one week, Hamilton Ontario for 3 days and then home sweet home for September! We ... read more

Beautiful Bali

Published: May 13th 2012Asia

We went on a lovely one-week vacation to Indonesia. The Darwin airport is about 10 minutes from our house, so we asked the taxi to be here 20 minutes before the time we wanted to arrive at the airport. Plenty of wiggle room and we were proud for being so on the ball. We were starting off our trip on the right foot! Our pride turned into disbelief and then into fear, when halfway to the airport the taxi driver ran over a curb and we heard: "whooooooooshhhhhhh". I said: "Did you hear that?!" and the driver said "oh don't worry, that's nothing". Well the 'nothing' turned out to be a flat tire. So we pulled over, a five-minute drive from the airport. So near, yet so far. There we were stranded on a busy street ... read more

Last weekend we went on an organized two-day tour of Kakadu National Park (pronounced Ga-ga-doo). Really beautiful place with lots of Aboriginal rock paintings, many that are thousands of years old! As per usual, there were plenty of "look out for the crocs" signs but our tour guide said it was safe to swim in this one location where there was freshwater and a waterfall! And we did loads of hiking. It was beautiful. It was rainy the whole time, which was great because it's much cooler than when the rains stop and the humidity build up starts. On the down side, the mozzies were full on (translation: the mosquitoes were very plentiful). During our hikes we saw a few wallabies hopping around -they are SO cool and we also went on a jumping croc tour. ... read more

Reptilian Rhapsody

Published: January 19th 2012Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin

We've seen loads of different lizards here: water monitors, many different kinds of geckos, goannas, frilled necks, and others I don't know the names of. Yesterday I saw a snake! I was pretty freaked out, it was quite big but unfortunately my photo didn't turn out (and I only took one due to being scared). According to a woman who knows about snakes, it wasn't a poisonous one, although she wasn't sure at first. I had goosebumps for a good hour or so after that. The lizards stay SO still it is very easy to not even notice them. Now that we've been here a while we are experts at spotting them. The frilled necks are probably my favourites. Usually they are sitting very still under trees and they look like a pile of leaves. It's ... read more

Count the carts!

Published: January 18th 2012Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin

Darwin is the world capital of misplaced shopping carts! It's really bizarre how you see them EVERYWHERE. People take them from the stores and just leave them wherever they feel like. We had one parked just outside our building for a few days until I couldn't take it anymore and I wheeled it to the nearest store. There was a new one left in the same spot the next day. It looks so dumpy. So after spending some time wondering what I could do to make Darwin look prettier and help the stores hold on to their carts, I thought of the solution: locking wheels!!! You know the ones that lock once you wheel the cart too close to the invisible fence? I saw them at some store somewhere in Ottawa once. So I looked into ... read more

No shoes, no shirt, no service. Those words mean very different things here in Darwin. No shoes: it is extremely common to see people walking around barefoot. At the gas station, at the grocery store, at the restaurant, wherever. I would say about one in five people are barefoot. At first I thought maybe a lot of people couldn't afford shoes, and while that might explain why some people are barefoot, for a lot of them, it's just a choice. It's the way they live. I see a lot of parents with shoes walking around with their shoeless kids. I have to say I'm not used to it and I don't know if I ever will be. I mean I know I've led a pretty sheltered and order-filled life in a lot of ways, but it ... read more

Cyclone Santa

Published: January 6th 2012Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin

It is incredible how the media can help to instill serious panic. As Christmas approached, the front page of the seriously sensationalist NT News (see earlier blog "No news is good news") got scarier and scarier, warning us about a cyclone (hurricane) that was travelling towards us. There were radio ads with a man with a very stern voice warning people to take it seriously. I imagine there were TV ads as well (we don't have cable). Some locals scoffed at the warnings, while others went completely berserk, emptying all the stores of canned goods and bottled water and waiting in huge line-ups at gas stations to fill their tanks. Some stores even had seriously overpriced "cyclone kits", which were comprised of first aid kits, batteries, flashlights, candles, waterproof matches, and pr... read more
