A final welcome chance to chill out after 13 weeks of full on globetrotting. Excepting Fiji the first time had same bed for more than 4 nights.... Fiji again .... Otherwise 3 nights in Luang Prabang (Laos), Hoi An (Vietnam), and Siem Riep Cambodia), so good to spread out a bit. Unfortunately my belly has also decided to spread out a bit... No surprise really after 3 months of exotic food and not 1 day without a beer (or three). So also time to start thinking about diets and excercise. As I lie here on this Thai beach. simmering gently in the tropical heat with waves lapping my tanned toes, I'm exhausting myself with such thoughts! So intend to enjoy last few days enjoying the memories of the last few months, perfecting my tan, honing my ... read more

OK, ok. I know its a weak title but it seemed appropriate, given that the gov have just issued warrants for the arrest of 18 red shirt leaders! However, the city seems eerily quiet with almost empty roads compared with the chaos of a month ago. We were out for a meal last night and no sign of any trouble, though some light army presence noted, so expect to get to airport today ok, hopefully. Quad biking was great and saw a lot more of countryside that way. Said goodbye to the rest of our group this am, and exchanged a few addresses as seems appropriate after a month together..whether any are followed up remains to be seen,...I hope so, as they have been a great bunch, fun all the way, and we will certainly miss ... read more

(She was a famous film star many summers ago!.. for our younger readers). Had a long, but fascinating road trip across Cambodia to Siem Reap and Ankor Wat , the ancient capital. First half was very marshy and fertile with rice fields and many other crops. The road was very rough and bumpy and narrow in many places, but currently being replaced by new road. Villages and settlements very basic with little huts on stilts..much flooding in rainy season...and most dwellings had a haystack in front of house and a cow or two also, along with ducks and chooks. People very poor and work long and hard with no apparent mechanization. We saw carts drawn by horses and oxen, and people toiling up to their thighs in water. Arrived in Siem Reap, which is another town of ... read more

Ouch! Those of you old enough to remember Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge will remember what a terrible recent history Cambodia has. You cannot help seeing / experiencing this place without feeling a desperate sadness and despair for our species of so called civilized animals. We are old enough to recall the terrible media footage and news reports of the mid 70s when I was still at university....just under 4 decades ago.. Possibly the worst episode of mass genocide known to us, with nearly 2 m people killed by their own countrymen over a 4 yr period of psychotic regime. How could that ever be possible? But it did happen and it happened before (Germany), and its happened since (Uganda, Yugoslavia) and god help us, it will happen again. Being here, seeing the prison, torture ... read more

Arrived in Saigon last night...no one here calls it Ho Chi Minh City...and immediately noticed the contrast with Hanoi and indeed Bangkok. Hanoi has the Communist govt and is the Capitol of unified Vietnam, whilst Saigon is the business and shopping capital. It oozes wealth and sophistication and could be any major city in the world, inc Paris or London..it has all the big name expensive stores, no visible street markets (although they do exist), and food and beer 50% more expensive! It does still have squadrons of scooters and m/cs, but also plenty of good cars..and no tuktuks.. We did still see chickens wandering the town center, which was a bit bizzare. We visited the Chu Chi region where the surviving Viet Cong tunnels are. We had the rare privelidge of having as our guide, ... read more

Found a rare quiet moment whilst waiting transfer to airport for short flight to Saigon, now aka Ho Chi Min city. Not quite the, same though, is it? Hoi Ann is a relatively peaceful place though the center is a bit manic with the driver's...mainly m/cs and cycles having absolutely no rules..its crammed with markets, and of course, the famous tailors. We went a bit daft yesterday cos its so cheap and they ship it home. So new suits, jacket, shirts, dresses and blouses. Shirley got some stuff made too. More bike rides in country round paddy fields, riding water buffalo, and playing at farmers. 3 nights here, which afforded a rare opportunity to unpack the bags and air the, by now, well worn wardrobe! Also gave us a fair bit of free time just to stroll ... read more

Bloody Norah! We have been Hanoi'd! After a short flight from Vientiene, capital of Laos, to Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, we experienced a total culture shock. From the laid back attitude and extreme poverty of Laos, to the intense energy and chaos of north Vietnam's capital city on the red river, the contrast over 1000km or so was striking. If we thought Bangkok drivers were maniacs, they had nothing on these bad boys. There are no rules, no lanes, no stopping for red lights, policemen, pedestrians or sod all, in fact. We were warned not to run, but walk steadily across roads....the cars, tuktuks and bikes (in their trillions) would work round us...buses would mow us down. If we ran, they couldn't anticipate our trajectory and would run us down...and we would be culpable!! We have ... read more

Laos, for being one of the 5 communist countries in the world, is amazing. The scenery is spectaculour with magnificent mountains and rivers, and again, lovely people. Turbulent past what with Vietnam war etc..most heavily bombed country in world with yanks dropping a B52 load of cluster bombs every 8 mins for 9 yrs during Nam. Now they pick up fragments still and make jewelry out of the aluminum ! Also still riddled with land mines still causing death and injury. People poor, hard working but happy and kids always smiling, playing with simple bamboo toys and stones etc. Went on hefalump trek followed by washing them in Mekong and being washed by them! Awesome experience. Village visit in Vang Vieng, during which we stayed with local peasant family, we were split into men, 3 to ... read more

Well, two actually, but who's counting? Smooth flight from the (relative) culture of Oz to arrive in the total chaos that appears to be Bangkok. Sensory overload is putting it mildly, though it was a thoroughly pleasant and fun experience. We hired a private guide for first day to show us round the Grand Palace and our first temple, and help us get orientated, learn to cross the street and find our way round the endless street markets. We then met the rest of the traveling companions with whom we would spend the next 4 weeks. They numbered 15 and seemed a happy, friendly enough crowd, ranging from 3 x 21 yr old girls (2 Ozzie's, 1 English), a 28 yr old Elgin lad, a Canadian couple in Mid 20s, a Canadian couple in mid 60s, ... read more

On the trail again..had amazing 9 days in fantabulous Fiji with the most friendly and happy people (despite 78% of pop living below poverty line) Puts our lives into sharp perspective. The Yasawa islands were beautiful and the weather was fantastic. Hope to live long enough to revisit sometime. Fishing again yesterday..again unsuccessfully, tho this time our skipper caught 7 beautiful fish to our zero bites..same bait, same boat..D'oh...must have poisoned our bait I think. Snorkeling was magnificent and finally got the secret of a good mask seal....unfortunately the tash had to go.but worth it. We were told plane would come at 3 pm which was ideal as oz flight 6.30. So, as is my want, I dived in for a last snork over the reef, not wanting to waste life lying around. After about half ... read more
