Wishing all our friends relatives and assorted readers a very Happy New Year from fabulous Fiji. This is the most fabulous place and very relaxing after 7 weeks 'on the road'. Started with 4 days at Yawa island in the western Yasawa chain. That was a lovely place with a beach side Bure, from which the pacific virtually lapped our toes. Spent our time fishing (unsuccessfully), eating fish that someone else caught, swimming, snorkeling over the coral, lying in a hammock with a beer, and generally working hard doing nothing! Needless to say, Shirley is very happy..got her sun, heat (33) and sea,, and we stay in the same place for 4 whole days! Got cramp snorkeling on 1st day, and struggled to get out of a rip with only one leg working, so got dragged ... read more

Time to kill and free WiFi whilst waiting Fiji flight.. Time to reflect on travels so far. Been good, seen lots, never really stopped much so quite tiring, but once in a lifetime stuff, so trying to pack in as much as possible. Shirley finding a bit tough at times as more of a nest builder than me, and never stopped in same place for longer than 2 days so couldn't weave too many twigs. However we both having fun, and despite 10 days in a camper van (__testing for most relationships I would expect), we have survived and are still looking forward to the rest of our trip together, esp the next leg in Fiji. Should be able to get plenty rest and sun before the Indochina month..once more full on traveling. We had, for ... read more

Following the stunning beauty of Kaikoura and our Xmas day sunshine, we started boxing day watching albatross and whale, and finished off in the middle of a francophile filled volcano cone. Like an ice cream but without the flake. Apparently the French 'bought it' from the Maori in 1838...not in the military sense, you understand...in fact in that sense the Maori 'bought it' from a rival Maori tribe, virtually wiping out the locals, and somehow the British then nipped in and nicked it from everyone..under a sleight of hand called the treaty of Waitangi. Any roads, the subsequent descendants of the original FESMs decided to preserve their heritage and, it has to be said, have slightly overdone it. A beautiful South eastern NZ seaside town ( which does, actually sit in an extinct…we hope..volcano), has rues ... read more

Hi. Shirley here just to prove I'm still alive Well, this year Xmas was certainly different. Started with a long lie, opened curtains to brilliant sunshine, and quiet breakfast. Missed the noise and chaos of normal Duff family Xmas, and second glass of Bucks Fizz. Kaikoura is a lovely place but little in way of Xmas spirit, ie, no tree or decorations. Went for nice long walk in sunshine, had crisps and bottle water for lunch looking out to sea for further albatross or fur seal sighting. Then returned for that 2nd Bucks fizz on balcony with mince pies. Went out to restaurant for lovely dinner, though not a cracker or tinsel in sight. Had an early start today to go on whale watch trip. 05.30 start...quick glance through curtains reveals a bit of a storm, ... read more

Wishing you all a very happy Xmas from Down Under. Hope youse have all finished your shopping, trimmed your trees (isn't that a daft verb?), chopped your logs, set your fires, lit your tables, brandied your puds, minced your pies, and defrosted the bird in readiness for the annual stuffing. Missing you all and wish that we could be with you (but only if you can come to us)…..there's plenty room down here! Seriously though, have a wonderful time and try not to worry about us...we'll cope! Love. Ross & Shirley. XX... read more

OK then..not exactly, but it was Macs Gold All Malt Lager & Marlborough Cab Sav, not gin. And it was IN a town called Geraldine and not some random woman i met in a bar (I should be so lucky...i'm a pensioner, you know).. And we couldn't have a drink in Timaru cos I had to drive to tonights camp, ie temperance..…but that's too long for a blog title, so gin, etc it is. Get over it. Drove Eddie, Margaret and Shirley to Gerry last night (god, its getting crowded here) after STUNNING drive to Mt Cook (NZ highest & 3 x Ben Nevis)...along lake Pahakai. Resisted temptation to climb it as only had a couple of hours..so had a cappuccino and pear muffin instead. Clearly not as satisfying but sometimes you have to compromise in ... read more

That's glow worms. Larvae actually. Not allowed to take photos in caves as they believe that taking photos will steal their souls and they won't morph into moths. Or was that the Aborigines? It all blurs into one big dreamscape after a while. Actually the Aborigines believe that they come back as moths (or is that possums?), so probably correct anyway. Anyway you'll have to imagine a big cave in the dark with lots of tiny green and blue led lights on the ceiling....and they charge you lots of money to get in....a bit like Santa's Grotto at B&Q..except you don't get 10% off on Wednesdays ( that's a private pensioners joke..you'll understand one day....soon). Well, that was 2 days ago at Te Anau, if anyone's bothering to look at a map..and why would you, what ... read more

So, left Moeraki & went to see the 'world famous' Moeraki Boulders. Never heard of them? Neither had we, but reckoned if they charged $2 to get through the fence to see them, they must be good. Well, we were underwhelmed. Round...yes. Interesting patterns..OK, but compared to, say, the Devils Marbles in Oz..they were little pebbles. If there is anything worth seeing in NZ, the kiwis find a way of making you pay for it. Eg, we went to the tip of the Otago peninsula to walk along the headland to the lighthouse to see if we could see Albatross, only to find the whole headland fenced off and asking $45 (£25) each to get in. Thank goodness for 'lonely planet'.....they said that you sometimes see them from the car park for free..and we did! Stayed ... read more

This is how I had always imagined NZ to be! Sparkling turquoise lakes and a backdrop of snow tipped mountain ranges. And Tekapo doesn't disappoint... It was just amazing.....no apologies offered for splashing about the superlatives but I don't know how else to describe this landscape. True, there can be miles of flat, almost boring plains, but then you turn a corner and...Ka Pow! Your blown away. We switched to Camper van after Christchurch, and are now doing our second overnight in her. Why do we tend to call boats, cars, etc after women? We still haven't given her a name, but she is big. Almost obese. And she is thirsty. In fact maybe we should call her whatsername....you know..Patsy's pal in Abfab? It'll come to me about 2 am...that's 1 pm your time. And we ... read more

Nothing prepares you for this. Touring a post major quake city is one of the most sobering and humbling experiences I have had. Following the massive quakes of 2001 and 2012, virtually the entire city center collapsed or was so badly damaged it had to be demolished. Nearly 200 people were killed, most in a single building. Many more were seriously injured. Roads and underground services were wrecked. There is no city center left other than a few unsafe buildings waiting demolition decisions. The streets are virtually empty other than a few tourists. Few cars as streets are closed off still. The main malls around Cathedral Square are gap sites, yet on one such site they have hurriedly assembled a novel mall made from Containers. It is amazing and testimony to the ingenuity of the inhabitants, ... read more
