The Hermosa beach in Jaco is the ideal place to relax and do nothing. Actually, this would be misinformation for the avid surfers for Hermosa is the surfers paradise. But since I don't surf at all I liked it because it was quiet, devoid of much commercial activity and the hotel we were in was right on the beach. We did go out on a sky walk tour near the Carara Biological Reserve but we were unlucky as we didn't get to see any toucan or macaw. We saw some other birds and a lot of green and black poison dart frogs. We spent our evenings mostly walking up and down the beach, enjoying the wonderful view of the sunset and taking pictures. The two days at the beach provided us with the much needed rest ... read more

Before I visit any place, I always try to find out what my options are with food, what is local and famous. When I was doing online research and reading guide books in Costa Rica, I didn't find much being mentioned about food. The only comment about food was that it was bland and there weren't any specific suggestions. Costa Rican's eat simple and the dishes comprise of simple local ingredients. Rice and beans are staple and constitute the major portion of a meal. Rice and beans don't sound very inviting but they make something called "gallo pinto" by mixing the two, and that with scrmbled eggs is super delicious. I have been having 'gallo pinto' and eggs everyday for breakfast and I'm simply loving it. There is also pleanty of seafood to be had in ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Alajuela » Arenal September 7th 2009

Yesterday was Day 2 in Costa Rica. Volcano Lodge, the hotel where we stayed is a wonderful place. The hotel is almost empty due the green season, but the staff is super friendly and service is excellent. Yesterday was our time for horseback riding in the morning and zip line canopy adventure in the afternoon. We rode up to the waterfalls on horseback while the rain came down up on us heavily. The ride itself was a treat, one and half hours through fields, settlements and some steep climbs and descents. When we reached the waterfall we were greeted by a surprise host, a black pit viper. It was out of its hole and sliding accross the trail when one of the park attendants caught it. We got a chance to see it's massive fangs as ... read more

Today was our first day of the week long vacation in Costa Rica. We arrived in San Jose yesterday and stayed in a hotel just outside the city. Today morning we were picked by the tour operators (pre-booked) from our hotel for a day long visit to Arenal volcano and surrounding areas. The drive from San Jose to Arenal is about 3-4hrs long and on the way we passed through Grecia, Sarchi, Naranjo and San Ramon. We saw a beautiful church in Grecia. The tour guide told us the structure was metallic and was made that way to withstand earthquake tremors. At Sarchi we got a chance to visit a handicraft shop and also saw artists at work. We had a great time at the Tabacon hot springs resort. Had loads of fun in the hot ... read more

I have been planning on a holiday for a long time now. I am a travel addict and never miss an opportunity to take a break from work. a couple of months back some of my friends visited Costa Rica and said the country is beautiful and the trip was a memorable one. Most importantly i would be able to avoid the hassel of obtaining an entry visa, my US student visa was good enough. I have booked my tickets and trip already. I am going for a pre booked trip and hope it would be good. Also, I am daring to visit the country during the "green season" and sincerely hope the rains won't spoil all the fun.... read more
