Hello! My name is Dorothy and I am phd student working with Dr. Leslie DeChurch at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA. I am working at the Grenoble Ecole de Management in Grenoble, France as part of a data collection effort for a National Science Foundation grant titled "Innovate Against Time: Drivers and Mechanisms of Knowledge Innovation Within and Across Organizations." This grant is focused on identifying antecedents of effectiveness in globally distributed multiteam systems. Over the course of the spring semester 2012, teams of business students at GEM are working with teams of psychology and ecology students at George Mason University to develop an innovative solution to an environmental problem. I'm assisting Dr. Chollet (a professor at GEM) with all aspects of the project from the France end, while collaborators at George Mason, Georgia Tech, and University of Central Florida are working hard to make sure the project goes smoothly in America.

When we bought our train tickets to Aix Les Bains, the very helpful woman at the counter convinced my friend and me to buy a discount pass for a few more Euros. These passes allow you to travel very cheaply around the Rhone Alps region, especially on the weekends. So, rather than waste our new found travel freedom by staying in Grenoble the next day (Sunday) we decided to travel to Lyon. Lyon is GORGEOUS! And, as the second largest city in Paris, it offers a lot of interesting areas to explore. As soon as we got off of the train, we took a "funicular" to the top of the "Fourviere hill" (a mountain that overlooks the city). This hill marks the founding point of the city of Lyon--a Roman colony in 43 BC. The first ... read more

This trip has truly been the most amazing oppotunity. When applying to graduate school, I never imagined getting to travel to Europe and meet fascinating people would be a part of my education! Over the past few weeks, I've gotten a chance to do some traveling around france and see some incredible sights. Two friends of mine from the states visited, and I had a wonderful time while they were here! I was actually co-authoring papers with both of them, so we took the opportunity to write while we were watching the french country side go by on train rides, or sitting beside the medeteranian sea, the eiffel tower, or the french alps. I'm pretty sure those are the best "offices" I've ever had. The innovation project seems to be going very smoothly over here. The ... read more

Over the past two weeks, I've managed to really settle into daily life at GEM. However, I've really felt like part of me has not left Georgia Tech! I'm finishing up a teams seminar at Georgia Tech next week (I've been attending the class virtually from 8:30 to 11pm from my hotel room) and have been collaborating with the researchers at Georgia Tech, George Mason and Northwestern University on various papers. Not only am I studying globally distributed virtual multiteam systems, I definitely feel like I am a part of one now....with all of the challenges inherent in these systems. When students working on their projects say that they have trouble scheudling and attending meetings across the six hour time difference on a regular bais, I completely understand. I am also really enjoying meeting new people ... read more

After 3 planes (Air France is great!), 1 train ride, and one automobile ride, I arrived in Grenoble on Wednesday Feb 15th, 2012. Then, right away, Bart Chollet (the collaborating professor at GEM) and I prepared our presentation for the business students. I was pretty jet lagged, but the presentation went well... The students seemed really excited about the project, and interested in learning about the virtual communication tool that they will be using throughout the semester (WebEx). My hotel in Grenoble is really comfortable and actually larger than my current apartment in Atlanta haha. On Thursday I took a train ride to Geneva to attend a Management and Networks conference at the University of Geneva. The train rides to and from Geneva allowed me to see some AMAZING french and Swiss countryside with great views ... read more
