Our arrival back into India was a little bit calmer than our first in Chennai when we encountered the tail end of Cyclone Varda. We got to Thiruvananthapuram after a short 40 minute flight. This plane, Sri Lankan Air, was smaller that the last we took to Colombo in one significant area. The length of the seat belts! I had to spend 40 minutes holding my breath to enable mine to do up. Mind you I could have just not done the seat belt up as it wasn't checked. At least with it done up I didn't bounce out of my seat when we made our touch down. Worse touchdown ever experienced since a flight into Dunedin back in the early 80's. We had plenty of rupees left over from our earlier visit ( which technically ... read more

We left Kandy on the early morning (6.15am) train which meant the stunning view over the first hour of the three hour trip had clear light with a nice misty covering. The descent is only about 400m but from the train you can see the taller mountains off to the south. We had booked our last night at a beach resort close to the airport , Negombo. Colombo airport is in the middle of a runway resurface. I read in the local paper this hasn't been done since 1986 and if it wasn't completed in 2017 then they would loose their accreditation to land International flights. This means the airport is closed from 8.00am to 4.30pm. Our flight back to India was scheduled for 3.00am! Negombo is a beach side tourist hang out so had some ... read more

What a relaxing town. Centered around a beautiful and clean(ish) lake, Kandy is a mix of modern hussle bustle with old heritage and religious attractions. The central religious attraction is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It supposidly houses a bhudda tooth and three times a day it is revealed to devotees. We joined the throngs of people to witness this in what was fun filled hour of queing to see the relic. All you can actually see is a smallest golden urn but it is revered by all. We visited a small graveyard close by where the English settlers were buried. The caretaker gave a small tour explaining some of the significant tombs. He was proud to inform us that Prince Charles had visited around 2004 and took special note of a 24 year ... read more

we had arranged for our driver Albey to take us on to Kandy with a bit of sightseeing along the way. True to form it wasn't that straight forward. His car turned up with a different driver. He had bought with him a wedding invitation that showed Albey had other plans! The replacement driver was nice, a retired school bus driver and very cautious. Our first stop was Dambulla. We hadn't expected to find such a great place and it turned in to another highlight of the trip. Situated up a hill behind a Bhudda built in 2000, complete with neon lights, were 5 cave temples of varying size. The detail and scale of them was impressive. They dated from 100BC and construction on them started by the same King who established Sigiriya. Next on our ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Central Province » Sigiriya January 3rd 2017

Sigiriya is a huge rock jutting out of the plains of central Sri Lanka. It has been used over the centuries as a place of worship and a defensive palace. Getting to the top is a bit of effort ( the guide book said it is equivalent of 60 stories of stairs, that might be an exaggeration but it felt like it) and if like me don't handle heights it's a daunting prospect. Getting to the top makes the view so much more enjoyable. The prospect of wasp attacks mentioned on several signs on the way up did not eventuate. We took it nice and slow and made the top. The next day was spent lounging by the pool and resting sore knees and calves.... read more

We had planned to head down the East Coast of Sri Lanka however the weather forecast didn't look promising for some beach time. The North East monsoon which normally occurs this time of the year was late and the long range forecast when we left Colombo was for fine weather for some inexplicit reason decided to start at exactly when we planned to head East. The forecast was for two days of rain. We had been chatting to some people about other places and thought a place called Sigiriya, north of Kandy, where we had to catch a train back to Colombo in a few days, sounded interesting. This proved to be good advice and turned into one our highlights of the trip so far. The train we had booked our ticket on carried on past ... read more

First day of the New Year and a mini-adventure planned. To get to the closest point between Sri Lanka and India we would have to cross Mannar Island. Our driver was a young Air Conditioning Engineer who was as excited as us. He had never been to the end of Mannar Island before either. At various points on the trip he was waving to his friends on motorbikes and we even passed his father who owned a garage on the way. The road (about 150 km each way) was relatively new except in a few places where the tidal waters obviously swept in. There were several army barracks on the way, signs of the conflict that occurred in the past three decades. At the end of Mannar Island is an old port where the ferries that ... read more

Today we had booked first class train tickets to Jaffna, a town right on the northern tip of Sri Lanka. It looked to be the best spot to try and get to the start of Adam's bridge for photo two and large enough to find a party for New Years Eve. Our train was the Colombo to Jaffna Express and extremely modern. First class had much more comfortable seats than the previous trip although the trip was only 3.5 hours so I will hold back on saying they were great. Sri Lanka changes considerably up in this northern area. It's very flat and desolate, it sort of felt like heading to the end of the world. The roading and rail infrastructure is new, having been rebuilt and extended recently resulting in an increase in tourism. The ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » North Central Province » Anuradhapura December 30th 2016

Anuradhapura had been the capital of Sri Lanka from around 200BC to 1100 AD. It's legacy are the many Dagoba's that were built to house the earthly relics of Bhudda. some of these rivalled the Pyramids in Egypt in terms of height and wealth contained within them. We had a small disaster on our trip around the temples. At each stop we had to drop our shoes. Unfortunately someone with feet half a size smaller than Shelley's put on her pair and left a par of the same brand. They were a different colour and in much worse condition. One of our packing techniques to minimize the weight we have to carry is only take one pair of shoes. Hopefully the shoes that Shelley has inherited can hold up. My Keen's rock shoes also had a ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Western Province » Colombo December 30th 2016

The day awoke clear and hot. We didn't have a lot on our agenda before catching the train at 3:55pm so we decided the National Museum could be a good introduction to the history of Anuradhapura where we were destined. It proved to be awesome with a good coverage of the history of the various ancient seats of power in Sri Lanka's history. The omnipresent Buddhist faith scattered in amongst various rulers and races controlling the country painted a clear picture on how significant the religion is to most of the country. From the museum we went to an upmarket shopping complex that had been recommended. Shelley needed a couple of new tops as the Indian laundries had almost destroyed some of hers. Nice to sit down and order a flat white and a long black ... read more
