Getting down to the end of the trip and its fair to say that your roving reporter is starting to feel the pinch. I am abbeyed, cathedraled and churched out to the point where feel I should take up the calling! To a certain member of the St Stephen’s community (read John Brown), no longer can you refer to me as a part time parishioner! If I see another castle, fort or roman/viking ruin, I will cut a swathe myself. The history in this place is overwhelming. The influence of Roman, Saxon, Viking culture now gives me a greater appreciation of why they the Poms recruit their cricketers from all parts other than England…..they have been coming from all parts for centuries ! We were in York earlier in the week and there was an exhibit ... read more

Evening everyone, Here we are in beautiful Durham - we’ve only just arrived so nothing to tell you about the place except the B&B is lovely and Steve has just locked himself out of the house while I was in the bath! We had 2 lovely nights in Edinburgh, although the B&B was a bit naff - bit old and manky and the bathroom & toilet need a good clean - but the beds were comfy and we were close to everything. It was absolutely FREEZING on the morning we went adventuring - I was starting to lament the fact that I had packed coats, not yesterday!! We rugged up and hit the high street catching the city tour bus for a lap of the old town. Once we had been around once we settled on ... read more

Hi All, The one thing that is driving me mad about blogging is that we don't always have access to the internet! Unfortunately a couple of blogs have arrived out of order - thought that I'd sent them but had only saved them . Anyway, here is the next installment. Caernarfon was ok, the B&B was comfortable but needed redecorating. We had a stroll around the city when we got there and decided to see the castle and ride the railway to the top of Mt. Snowdon the next day. We were up early and decided to do the train trip first as we had to drive up the mountain to meet the train. A dinky little cog railway took us up the mountain - fantastic views, the photos don't do them justice - absolutely FREEZING, ... read more

Hi All, Bath was glorious! “What did the Romans ever do for us?” Well, they did give us sanitation, and baths. The complex must have been something when Biggus was a boy - hot water laid on, slaves to cater to your every whim - the Romans really knew how to enjoy themselves. Met a Roman matron who told us all about her make-up and perfume all made from minerals and local plants, honey and waxes. Clever buggers the Romans! Lovely little town, easy to get around - park & ride for a couple of quid - we had a lovely day. Had a look through Bath Abbey and were serenaded by a fairly decent French choir who gave a lunchtime concert. Went to the Fashion Museum for a browse - beautiful, beautiful gowns and gloves, ... read more

Greetings All, Time for your roving reporter to provide an update. Finally got out of Serbia yesterday (Thursday) 4 days after we were scheduled to leave. We had just about conceded on the English part of the trip as it would have been too hard to pick up lost ground. Big thanks to my cousin Emina who contacted British Airways last Saturday. As a result, managed to rebook on a flight for Thursday. At the time, I saw it as a pain the arse but as it turned out, it was the first flight out of Belgrade so it was fortuitous. Thanks Emina, you are the best!!! In the interim, spent extra time with cousins, nieces aunts, uncles that until recently I didn’t know of. Spoke to my cousin Milan who told me that my father ... read more

Hi All, Finally leving Serbia for the UK - will pick up our driving holiday, albeit 4 days late, in Bath. Will be sorry to leave the family behind - parting has been very difficult, the final farewell at the airport today will be a real wrench. Everyone has been very kind to us - Tetta Rada and her sisters, Maca and Savka have been determined to feed us until we burst! What a lovely family they are. Had a call from the boys to tell us that Mum has been in hospital. She had another dizzy spell at Guild on Tuesday and has been in the Anglis Hospital for tests. She is on her way home as we speak so I don't know any more just yet. My heart-felt thanks to the ladies at church ... read more

Hi All, As stated above, there is movement at the station - some flights going back to the UK and further north have started today. Everything is pretty messed up but we are booked to fly to the UK on a flight tomorrow sometime in the afternoon. We are due in Bath Thursday night and it could be a very late check in at the B/B. Keep your fingers crossed that the flight goes ahead. I suppose we are in a little better position than if we were in a more popular tourist spot - we had trouble getting a flight to Belgrade in the first place, it's certainly not on the mainstream tourist track - hoperfully that means that there aren't too many folk needing to head back to the UK. Going out to a ... read more

One week down and its time to put the bloke’s perspective on things. At the time of writing, your roving reporter is on the ground in a place called Kremna, a little village 240 kms south west of Belgrade in Western Serbia. London was terrific, with the Westminster Abbey and Tower of London being the highlight. Went to the Sherlock Holmes museum in Baker St. So, so. Still trying to work out how you can have a museum for a fictional character! If you’ve got some spare cash, stuff the stock market. Invest in local business on the East side of town, particularly lawyers who specialize in Immigration law. Judging by the look of the local populace, it’s fair to say that it is a growth industry lead by a gent called Ahjay Bagwan who ... read more

Hello All, Well, how to describe the night we have had tonight! Our niece Dragana took us to a beautiful seafood restaurant on the shore of the river Danube for dinner, the food was wonderful but the music! - the music was breathtaking! For all my music friends, you missed a fantastic experience - a 5 piece acoustic Serbian folk band; mandolin, bass fiddle, accordion, lead and rhythm guitars and voices like angels!! Our niece has a lovely contralto voice and she sang some folk songs with them . They made my heart SING!!!! You know, I think that Ainslie is right, God really lives in music. I’ve felt a bit down, one thing and another and I really needed tonight. Steve says that we have had a highlight in each day and for me the ... read more

Hi All, Well, here we are in sunny downtown Serbia. Yesterday we went for a long walk through the centre of Belgrade from the city square to the Kalamegdon fort the place is HUGE - first built by the Romans, then added on to by the Ottomans and later the Austo-Hungarians. It looks out over the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. The old city is really lovely - lots of gardens and parks, we were entertained by a group of young people playing classical music - just lovely! The Serbian Marathon was on yesterday - lots of hot Serbian blokes, Beansie, thought of you immediatly - the city was like an ant's nest stirred with a stick. There were people, dogs, kids, bicycles everywhere competing with the runners - if this had been Melbourne, ... read more
