Yes, I am now a Thai cook. And, according to Julia Child, never apologize for your meals when they don't meet one's high standards. So - in the future - I will only apologize when I can't find the right Thai ingredients. Where does one find holy basil in Alaska? Or Thai eggplant? Pia (a new friend) and I went the Thai Farm Cooking School just outside of Chiang Mai. We were picked up from our hotel and taken, along with five others, to the local fruit/vegetable market where we were shown a variety of local ingredients that make Thai food unique. I was able to wander around a bit, and found some cotton fabric that is unique to the area. I had been looking for it for a number of days and really felt like ... read more

Today started at about 2:30 in the morning when the hard bed pads got to be too hard for my pressure points. I know! Poor me, having to sleep on a hard bed in the loft of a kind Thai family after being feed a delicious home cooked meal. Really roughing it here - especially the blueberry cheesecake and iced coffee at Cafe de L'Amour in the middle of Chiang Mai listening to a little bossa nova in the air conditioning! We did get going at 7:30 to make an offering to the monks at the local temple in the village. It's a tradition (I don't know if that adequately describes it) to take some of the food from the family meals and offer it to the monks, so we joined Aoi this morning and each ... read more

We are starting to get used to these early mornings, even those who believe they are supposed to be on holiday and shouldn't have to get up on a schedule. Today was a ride in our trusty songteaw out to the first elephant hospital of it's kind. It was started by a very courageous Thai woman who truly has a heart for the suffering of animals who can't speak for themselves. The Friends of the Asian Elephant foundation was started in 1993 with the woman going from village to village in the Chiang Mai area and witnessing for the ethical and safe treatment of elephants. With support from world and local organizations she built the hospital, and it has become a home for five permanent resident elephants, two of whom lost one of their front legs ... read more

Another early morning began after spending the night on the hardest "bed" I've ever tried to sleep on and finally calling it quits and getting up at 5:30 am. Most of the folks on the trip were feeling the same as many of us were hanging around the common room pretty early. After a nice breakfast we climbed into our trusty "local limo" - or songteaw - for a short drive from New Sukohthai to the historic park. It was an amazing adventure that began with twelve of us trying on bikes for the ride around the site. I just had to have the hot pink one! We all got on our bikes and rode up and down the alley testing our brakes, seat hights, and bells. I'm sure it would have been quite the spectacle ... read more

Last night - before meeting our group for the obligatory meet up with our tour leader (who is adorable and has the most amazing sense of humor) Noelle and I went on a search for a few temples. I have yet to really figure out if they are temples or monasteries. I think they are a combination of them - as most of the ones we've been to are more like complexes of many different buildings, some of which are for the upkeep, the cooking and eating of meals, and the housing of the monks. So far, it seems the temples housing the buddha images are in the center of the complex. They have all been labeled as "wat" - so I will continue to refer to them as such. So, Noelle felt her trip to ... read more

Bright and early?? Well, early by my standards, we got a wake up call at 6:15am so we could get all packed and breakfasted by 7:30 pickup time. We took a small car over to Khao San Road and transferred to a mini-van and picked up several other travelers bound for the floating market about an hour and a half outside of Bangkok. The trip out was very uneventful - thankfully. While the traffic is still a bit disconcerting and your driver may occasionally flash a brief look of terror, it all still seems a bit civilized. We drove out toward Damnoen Saduak, south east of Bangkok, and passed some pretty interesting fish farms and rice paddies along the way. It was cool to see some of the traditional dress of the fish farmers - complete ... read more

Well, downtown Bangkok is living up to it's reputation. It's loud, dirty, vibrant with the pulse of humanity, and crowded with some of the kindest most tolerant of people. There are thousands of tourists on our street in historic downtown Bangkok, Th Rambutti, which parallels the famous backpacker's haven of Khao San Road. The entire street is not much more than open air restaurants, bootlegged goods, cheap trinkets, street cart foods, foot massage places (complete with fish pedicures and couches lined up on the sidewalk, and tour offices. Thankfully, the locals who work here have been so friendly and helpful. My first evening in Bangkok, and I choose to take a free shuttle over to the Aksra Theatre to see if I could catch a performance of the hun loo-ang (royal puppets). Alas, the theatre was ... read more

One doesn't have to travel far to see things that can confound and fill the spirit. I've seen it all today, and it's only 10:15am. I've packed everything in the apartment, including the coffeepot, so what choice did I have but to pop down to Sagaya's for a bagel and coffee on a beautiful, sunny summer morning. Unfortunately, the miles long line of runners/walkers for the "Run for Women" had not been in my radar and was now between me and my coffee. After a 30 minute drive around the start line and over the trail I arrived. The line for coffee was almost as long - but that did not deter me. I mean, it's Kaladi's iced coffee we're talking about. The confounding part came when I tried to get into my truck to drive ... read more

Travel is travel, regardless of where it begins, right? I took a short trip down to Homer for a short stay at a dear friend's cabin over the weekend. I needed a little break from the school year before seriously packing up for the summer and the trip to Thailand and then back to Southeast. It was a great drive, with some welcome rain. The beach in Homer and the sights along the Turnagain Arm and Kenai river region are some of the most beautiful in Alaska. Today is officially "less than two weeks" before heading out to Thailand! I'm in a "packing crisis". Just how much is too much or too little?!?! Rick Steves or Samantha Brown - I could use a little help if you happen upon this blog :-)... read more

The count down has begun! Noelle and I leave in 32 days. For me, there's only one week of school left. And only four days with students. I have a lot of planning, packing, and moving to do before this all happens. I could not be more excited for our trip. Tonight was Multicultural Night at school, and my wonderful and amazing aide, Kushmal, who is from Thailand, gave me a tourist copy of a Bangkok map. It will be fun studying. I can't imagine how Noelle is hanging in. She still has four weeks of school to go - I think she works on Monday - and leaves on Thursday! Send her good "end of year" vibes. I am trying to figure out if I can add photos from my iPad to the blog. One ... read more
