Today We went to Ottawa, Canada and saw lots of old buildings that are government buildings now. They were really pretty. We also saw the Museum of Civilization. It was very big and had lots of things to do in it. Then, we saw an Imax film about sea monsters from millions of years ago. The screen was huge! It was a dome that came all around you so it felt like you were really there. After that, we tried some poutine. They are French fries with cheese curds and gravy. Surprisingly, we all thought it was very good, except Trevor. ... read more

North America » United States » Michigan » Mackinac Island September 10th 2008

We took a boat to Mackinac Island and explored some of it. The whole island was only three miles long and there were no cars or buses on it, mostly horses. We found a park, a cemetery, and a cave. There were lots of trails going all around the island. Then we went back downtown and ate at a restaurant. We looked at some more shops until it was time to go. About half the shops sold fudge and candy, because that’s what the island specializes in. Then we took the boat back, and crossed to border into Canada and drove to Sudbury, where we spent the night.... read more

We went to Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in Michigan today. There was a beach that was supposedly behind the biggest dune. It ended up being about 2 miles behind it over several more dunes and lots of sand. It was a pretty beach there though, and we had it mostly all to ourselves, because everyone else had given up on walking to it. We saw lots of animal tracks on our way and it was really fun to run down the dunes. We stayed at Wilderness State Park for the night.... read more

North America » United States » Michigan September 2nd 2008

We stayed two nights at Ludington State Park to rest, unwind & and do some cleaning and laundry. The first night we walked down to the smaller lake and the kids all got in. Last night Ciara and I where sitting outside while the kids watched a movie ad a ratcoon was not more then 2 ft from us under our table. This morning on day two here we took what started out as a small hike and ended up much longer. The hike took us over boardwalks, thought forests, hills and over many sand dunes so what was about 3.5 miles there took quite some time. There where all sorts of animal tracks in the sand. We where rewarded with our own private beach at the lighthouse, where we all got into the nice cool ... read more

We could see the Sears Tower on the other side of the lake. We then drove to Van Buren State park in Michigan and went to the lakeshore there. We found lots of cool rocks and it was really fun. We stayed there for the night.... read more

North America » United States » Illinois » Chicago September 1st 2008

Today was Chicago! First we walked past Soldier Field to get to Buckingham Fountain, and we passed the Chicago Jazz Festival on the way. The fountain was huge! It sprayed really high up every 30 minutes. Next we passed through Millennium Park to get to the trolley so we could get to Navy Pier. We saw lots of downtown on the way there. Navy Pier had shops, restaurants, and a few carnival rides. We ate at Bubba Gump shrimp factory then went to the pier area. We rode the Ferris wheel and you could see the whole city from up there! On the way back to our car we saw the Sears Tower. This was my favorite part so far.... read more

North America » United States » Illinois » Springfield September 1st 2008

We went to Springfield, Illinois today, and the first thing we did was go to the Lincoln Museum near a real 100 year-old train station! It was a great museum, and we were very Glad we went there. Next, we saw Abraham Lincoln’s real house from right before he left for the white house. There was all kinds of old furniture, and decorations there. We went to the Lincoln tomb next. It was very beautiful and it was made of marble with lots of bronze statues on and inside it. After that, we drove to New Salem, where there was a recreation of his old town in Kentucky, where Lincoln lived when he was 22-28. It was very pretty here as well.
