The Islands So we set off for the ferry from Georgetown very early, and after a rough 2.5 hrs on the water, we finally arrived on Langkawi island. First impressions, weren’t helped by the dull weather, cloud and rain everywhere, but as well as that it was dirty and hardly any westerners at all. Instead there were poor flea ridden cats with half their tail chopped off everywhere on the island. We checked in at the ‘Azio’ which was a very nice hotel, then went for a walk around the Kedah area which is where we were staying and scoped out the shops and street stalls, got a bite too eat, from a local (busy) restaurant then went back to the room. At night time, the markets were on, so we went back out again to ... read more

Singapore to Malaysia After an amazing calm flight to Singapore Changi airport on an A380 air bus (seriously, the plane was amazing, comfy and so spacious) our first impressions of Singapore were that it was so clean and so pretty - the buildings reminded us of Las Vegas, all lit up and huuuge! We got a taxi to our hostel ‘The five stones’ which was a brand new hostel, really nice and modern.. Once we had checked in, we went to our 6 bed dorm to see who we would be sharing with and were chuffed when we realised that we had the entire room to ourselves, yes! We went for a little walk around the boat quay and decided to go for a drink in one of the bars behind the boat quay.. We later ... read more

Tuesday morning we left Mark n Tracey’s in Christchurch and set off to Kaikoura for a couple of days. The drive to Kaikoura is a lovely scenic setting of the hills and then the east coastline. We arrived at our hostel for the night the ‘Sunrise Lodge’ which was very nice, then unpacked and drove to the seal colony and watched the seals lazing around the rocks, then wandered around town for a few hours. At night we decided to go to one of the caravans on the bay for a seafood snack of scallop and whitebait patties then chilled back in the hostel. We had a 3 bed dorm to ourselves all day, and then just before reception shut at 8pm the owner came in the room with a very smelly Frenchman and booked him ... read more

The morning we left Queenstown we were partly relieved and partly gutted. Relieved to not spend as much money as it is expensive there, but gutted as it was like having a holiday within a holiday. The Stray bus picked us up at 9am and we met our 4th Stray driver of the tour - Seagull. They all have funny names, so we had originally Gollum, then Scratch, then sideshow Rob, and now Seagull. On the bus was our German friend Felix again, who had caught up with us on the trip so we chatted away all morning. Once we left Queenstown we headed towards Mount Cook, doing our usual stop offs for toilet breaks and scenery pics. Once we arrived, we were informed that due to the freak winds we experienced in Queenstown, the roof ... read more

We set off as usual 9am for the bus ride to Makorora, leaving the ice behind us and heading towards the sunshine. The 1st stop was Lake Matheson, the mirror lake, only problem being the wind was so bad that the ripples in the lake stopped the mirror affect, so we were gutted we missed that. Rob the driver then took us to a tiny fishing village nearby so we could all sample whitebait patties, which were absolutely amazing. The next part of the road trip took us to the blue pools. We all got off and went for a walk, some of the guys including our stray driver all went cliff diving into one of them. I would in a normal situation but as Tim our friend who did dive said afterwards - it was ... read more

Stray Second week adventures! Another day, another road trip.. this time leaving Taupo and making our way over to the Blue Duck Station in Whakahoro (pronounced f***-a-whore.. much to everyones amusement!). We stopped off at Taupo Bungy as some of our group wanted the morning adrenaline fix. Always fun watching them, especially the big guys who are most scared! We then took a leisurely cruise up to the farm, which is the most remote area of the North Island.. Nice drive up there, and we were assured the scenery is spectacular, although the rain was so bad we couldn’t see much! Upon arrival, Wendy who helps run the lodge gave us a rundown on the history and all the conservation stuff they get up to. The place was stunning - we had 9000 acres to explore! ... read more

The Stray Tour bus turned up at our Ponsonby backpacker hostel at around 8.10am. As soon as we boarded the bus there was lots of enthusiastic ‘good mornings’ said to us. We set off for Raglan the first stop of our Stray journey. On the way the driver ‘Gollum’ kept pulling up for us to take some gorgeous scenic views, and also to collect some alcohol and food for the night. We all paid $10 each to arrange a huge barbecue for all 24 of us on that 1st night- proper good feed! Once we arrived in Raglan, we checked in to the Karioi Lodge, and went for a trek around the infamous ‘Loop’ track which was very steep muddy and hard work. When we set off, nobody would go first, so Jen talked me into ... read more

First time in the Southern Hemisphere for me - Jen had been to NZ before. First impressions were that it was exactly like England, cold and grey clouds. Ha-ha. The weirdest part about flying to NZ was that we set off at 11.30pm for Los Angeles on Sunday night, for a 13 hr flight, and arrived in Auckland NZ at 9.05am Tuesday morning. Due to the time difference etc we completely missed Monday. The flight wasn’t too bad this time, a little turbulence but I even managed to sleep for about 2 hrs, Jen slept or about 8 hrs! Once we arrived in Auckland airport, we got the blue bus to Auckland city centre, only costing $16 each for a 30min trip. The currency was better in NZ, it was half to the pound e.g.£1 was ... read more

VEGAS BABY!! After a very turbulent 45min flight from L.A we finally arrived in Las Vegas. I normally freak out at turbulence but a nice Canadian guy we met called Bill (who was an entrepreneur in the meat and real estate business….in other words - wadded!! ) calmed me down on the plane as he was explaining that he goes every year to Vegas, and when we fly over the mountains it always gets turbulent and as soon as we fly past them it stops. Bill was spot on as I had a window seat and as soon as we flew past the last mountain, it stopped (thank god!) Once we arrived in Vegas, we took a shuttle to the Hostel Cat (which is starred in the Hangover film). First impressions were really good, spacious and ... read more

After an amazing time in San Francisco, we head off on the BART to the airport for our flight to Los Angeles, and this is where it all started. First of all, we checked the board to see that our flight had been cancelled, so they put us on stand by for another flight, which happens to be a delayed flight from before ours, so we rushed through security, and legged it to the gate just in time. When we arrived at LAX, Jen was a little disappointed as still cloudy everywhere and no sunshine again. As we were waiting for our luggage, Jens didn’t arrive, so we had to go to the info desk, only to be told that it was put on the flight after ours, so we had to wait another 20mins. Once ... read more
