South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu December 15th 2009

So we arrived in Cusco almost one week ago. At the bus station we decided to check out our first choice of hostel but after realising that it was around 3 times the price of everywhere else we have stayed we passed and ventured off into the city to find something else. After 30 mins of walking we haggled with a hostel and got a really cheap rate and its only two minutes from the main square. That first day we had already been on a bus for 21hours so took it handy and just looked around the city. The second day we decided to check out some places to book the Machu Picchu trek. After looking in a few different agencies we decided to go with the first ones we had check that are based ... read more

South America December 8th 2009

We arrived in Huaraz late last wednesday evening after a 24 hour jouney from Mancora. The journy should have been a lot shorter but unfortunately travel in SOuth America is not always as it should be! The first day we managed to find a hostel in the rain and get some dinner before heading for an early sleep. On Thursday we decided that we needed to organise what to do here and we wanted to visit the Cordillera Blanca. This mountain range has the most amount of peaks over 6000 meters in all of the Andes. After a visit to a few different agencies we decided to book the Santa Cruz trek. This trek last for 4 days and goes directly through the range. That evening we stocked up on tasty pizza, packed our bags and ... read more

South America » Peru » Piura » Máncora December 1st 2009

After all the border formalities between Ecuador and Peru we arrived on Peru soil at 5pm on Saturday evening. We could already feel the change in weather and could see the mosquitos looking for my blood!!! Once through the border our bus was bound for Tumbes where we had to change for a combi bus to Mancora. In tumbes we had to get a Tuk Tuk to the combi which then took around 2 hours to reach Mancora. When we arrived at Mancora it was dark so it was hard to judge what the place was like. The only thing we could tell is that we had not really arrived in Peru but some little gringo filled surfers home. One bad point is that we arrived at election time and for some reason that meant most ... read more

South America » Ecuador » South » Cuenca November 27th 2009

After arriving in Banos on the first night we met up with Mark who stayed with us in Cotopaxi. He is with a large group from all over the place so we had a couple of beers with them and also Richard and Tom from the UK. We were quite tired that night due to travelling from Cotopaxi so took it handy enough before heading to bed. The next morning we had a big day planned. We started at 8am with a large breakfast in our hostel. Once the belly was filled we made our way to the agency across the road to rent mountain bikes for 5dollars per day, not bad eh?!! There is a brilliant cycle to do from Banos to a place near the jungle called Puyo which is 60km away. The cycle ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Cotopaxi November 23rd 2009

Once we left our hostel in Quito we arrived at their sister hostel in Cotopaxi. This hostel was like a paradise exceot for the temperature as it is 3500 meters in the mountains! On our arrival we were given our lunch and then brought for a short trip to a near by waterfall followed by the 4 dogs of the house. The house itself sits on two hecters of land and overlooks the giant volcano which is still active. That evening we played some Extreme Jenga, had a beer and went to bed. On Saturday morning (My Birthday), we were collected at 11.30am by our two guides for the climb. We also had a new member to our team (Andy) from England so now our team was made completely of the british and Irish Lions!! Our ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito November 23rd 2009

So we arrived in Quito on the 14th of November. Quito is the capital of Ecuador and is at an altitude of 2800 meters. My main plan for Ecuador is to climb a mountain (Volcano) called Cotopaxi which is a couple of hours south of Quito. We figured that the altitude training would help. On arrival in Quito we made friends with a spanish couple (Martin and Layla) and we decided to stay in a hostel called the Secret Garden. I did not realise how touristy this Hostel would be but it proved to be great fun. The hostel itself has a 5th floor terrace overlooking Quito city and also the mountain called Pichincha. The first day we just took it easy and just tried to get used to the altitude. The following day we spent ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota November 13th 2009

After another day in Medellin spent with Elliot from London we made our way by another night bus to Bogota. Unfortunately on this bus our seats would not recline very much so we were stuck in an upright position for 9 straight hours but I think I managed a few minutes sleep, at least our bus wasn´t leaking!!! We arrived to "Hostel Platypus" at around 7am and was told our room would not ready until 12! Shortley after while we were trying to wake up in the lounge area we met to New Zealanders, Matt and Melissa. The of us then went out for a quick wander to get some breakfast and some lovely Columbian coffee! We ended up seeing a cable car going up a mountain and thought it could be a good idea. We ... read more

South America » Colombia » Medellin November 10th 2009

So we have arrived safe and sound in medellin, the home town of El Señor, Pablo Escobar. Our bus journey unfortauntely was not as pleasant as some before. We luckily got the seats up the front but there was very little leg room and then to make matter worse there was a leak above my seat so my pants started to get soaked. I stuck some tissue up in the roof which slowed it down but I awoke at 4.30 in the morning with weat tracksuit bottoms. Fortunately 30mins later the bus stopped and half the people got off the bus so I was able to jump into one of their seats for the remainding few hours. When we arrived at Medellin Bus station Anne went to put back on her flip flops only to realise ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena November 10th 2009

So I had previously written this blog only for the computer I was on to crash and leave me with nothing I had written so I had given up but I will attempt it again now. We ended up ataying for a total of 4 night in Cartagena, orginally we had only planned to spend a couple of nights but we heard that the Carnival for their independance with a finale of Miss Columbia was on so we could not resist a couple of nights at a South American carnival. We ended up spending quite a lot of time with the American couple from Oregan we met on the first night. Their names were Eric and Jodell and they were spending 6 weeks visiting Panema and Columbia. After our first night with them in the local ... read more
