Escaping Vang Vieng proved no easy task. Within minutes I noticed that the aircon was non functional, we didn't even have any fans and the windows would not open. I believe it was around 35C or so. Sweat began to pour like a waterfall, everyone peeled away clothing, and we literally were all baking within the confines of that bus. A buddy of mine lamented, while gazing at his nearly empty water bottle, how he most likely would not be surviving the trip. Luckily the driver pulled over a few moments later and then toiled away at something before the fans kicked in and at least created some airflow. The fun didn't end there however as the road to the capital city, Ventiane, consisted of zig-zags and ups and downs. I was just passing through Ventiane ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng February 15th 2010

The road to Vang Vieng consisted of mainly cliffside roads with no railings of any kind, in an over packed minibus with completely bald tires. I tried sleeping on the way and my head kept banging into the window cuz of the bumpy road, probably resulting in a concussion and mild brain damage. In any case upon arriving I went to the spicylaos hostel (yeah they have another one in this town) and settled in. The dorm was really neat, kinda of like we're all in a treehouse. This is one of the better hostels I've stayed in so far. I then walked around the town, which wasn't very big, and quickly familiarized myself with the place. Vang Vieng is a quite fabled place, surrounded by high limestone mountains, that many backpackers flock to for the ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang February 8th 2010

The slow boat arrived here in the evening. I could tell immediately that Luang Prabang was a really nice city, extremely clean and infused with French influence. It's actually a UNESCO world heritage city and is filled with tons of temples and European like architecture. I left the boat and headed onto the main strip to get a sense of the area. I headed to the SpicyLaos Hostel, where I originally wanted to stay but found out that they were all full so I had to get another room nearby which was more expensive. Speaking of expensive, this whole town was outrageously so! Kind of surprised because of the fact that it's Laos but I noticed there were quite a few older tourists here and not too many budget backpackers like myself. On the main road ... read more

I crossed over the river to the town of Huay Xai in Laos in the morning. The immigration checkpoint there was a mess! A huge mass of people was waiting to get the visa while another group was waiting to get their passports checked. Both groups were intermixing and I had to fight my way to the front to get my passport in. Then it took another hour before they got to my passport and gave me the visa. Then I had to wait to get it checked by immigration. By then I was already pretty tired. Laos' official name is Lao PDR - or as many nickname it "Please Don't Rush". The country was part of Siam for a while then a French colony, it's influence which can be seen. It's the poorest country in ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Pai February 3rd 2010

I had heard many good things about Pai since I was passing through Malaysia, so I guess it's fair to say I had certain expectations about this small town in northern Thailand, very close to the Burmese border. My new British buddies Henry, Sam and Dave came along with me to check it out. Our minibus traveled through long, windy roads as we made our way through the mountains. We arrived after the sun had gone down and were let off at the main street of the town. Pleasantly surprised, or at least relieved, my initial impressions were good. We strolled down the street with all our gear, and slowly examined the extremely peaceful and laid back town and people. Vendors quietly went about their business, people walked about without a care in the world, and ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai January 30th 2010

Just a short entry describing our night out in Chiang Mai. We had all recently finished our jungle trek that afternoon and decided we'd go out that evening. During the afternoon I went to a local market and just reorganized my pack. Then the English boys and myself went downstairs in our guesthouse and had some beer. Zlatko joined us here as well. We were supposed to meet up with the others at around half passed nine so we left a little earlier and walked towards the old quarter and attempted to find this place called rooftop bar. After a while it was blatantly obvious that we were lost, and we asked several tuk-tuk drivers for directions, most seemed to be either lost or unwilling to help. We eventually hired a tuk-tuk to get us there, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai January 30th 2010

I arrived in Chiang Mai at about seven in the morning. The bus driver had decided that it would be a brilliant idea to play Thai music for the entire night on the way up, and needless to say I didn't get any quality sleep. I had signed up to go Jungle Trekking up here and despite my lack of sleep I was excited to begin the adventure. I took a quick shower and headed downstairs to get some breakfast in me and multiple coffees for a good kick in the ass. Immediately I met another fellow trekker named Sam, who was also sitting down for some food, and then shortly after his friends Dave and Henry who joined us as well. These guys were from England and traveling through south east Asia before going to ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok January 27th 2010

After getting my visa run out of the way it was time to continue pushing north and head to Thailand's sprawling city of Bangkok. Home to over eleven million people, the city stretches on as far as the eye could see. Everything often moved at a hectic pace with motorbikes and tuk-tuks flying about and traffic being an integral part of the city. Pollution is heavy here and the air feels the same. Also, unlike most other cities, Bangkok seems to have many city centers as opposed to only one. On the overnight bus ride up I met a German guy called Robert and and English guy called Henry and they helped make the voyage pass quicker. Robert had a brick of hash that he shared with us. I also ran into Marjorie, a fellow Montrealer ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Kanchanaburi January 26th 2010

Left for Kanchanaburi in the early morning and was picked up by the shuttle from my room. We went around Khao San picking up others and low and behold, I see Manne and the two girls (Annie and Holly) I met previously, piling in. Funny how we always run into each other. After a three hour ride we arrived in the area and immediately were let out at the war cemetery, where the remains of hundreds of allied prisoners of war from World War Two rested. From there we went to the nearby war museum and the bridge on the river Kwai, made famous from the 1957 movie. I really enjoyed that movie and it was cool to see the actual bridge where so many died building it along with the whole Burmese-Thai death railway, in ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ayutthaya January 25th 2010

I decided to take the full day tour and was picked up early morning, then headed about an hour north of Bangkok to the ancient and former capital of Thailand, Ayuthaya. The rest of the day consisted of temple and ruin hopping around the town. Learnt lots about Bhuddism and saw ruins that were hundreds of years old. Seemed like Thailand had a pretty tough relationship with their neighbor Burma, as these two fought 24 wars in the span of a couple centuries, with the final one resulting in Ayuthaya's destruction. At that point the Thai's decided to move their capital to its current location of Bangkok. A lot of famous Bhudda statues were seen as well. Think it'll be a while until I visit temples again...... read more
