Dane and Kahni

Dane and I were inspired to travel to Thailand for our love of Thai food and gorgeous beaches, exotic scenery and meeting new people. We needed a real adventure and desperately wanted a soul satisfying vacation in a land we'd never been to...and all I can say is, "WE DID IT!"

This is the last entry for our 2010 Thailand trip. If you want to start at the beginning, scroll to : *Start here: Back to Bangkok" and click {view full entry} Leaving Thailand does not get any easier with practice! We determined to enjoy the last few days at our resort, and spent the time wandering through the acres and acres of manicured gardens, swimming in the different pools and in general being spoiled to death by the staff who bring you towels, drinks, fruit, even cold towelettes. We had invited Pooh and his family to come on Saturday, the day before we had to head back home. It turned out to be one of most memorable days, starting out with the marketing! This is not Walmart, Costco or Safeway, not even close! It is lively, ... read more

We took the ferry from Koh Samui to Surat Thani and then to Pooh's hometown of Phangnga, where he picked us up. We were so glad to see him. He had brought his niece and little daughter with him and they all took us to our hotel in Phuket. He insisted, worried that the mini bus would not drop us off right at the door, as the Marriott is set off the main road quite a ways. Our hotel room was perfect on the second try...we got a beautifully remodeled room on the top floor overlooking the royal suite and the gorgeous Andaman Sea. Even better than the last time, a bit closer to the sound of those hypnotic, rhythmic waves, crashing over and over again, massaging the mind and soothing the soul. I felt that ... read more

Fortunately for us, the Lompraya ferry from Koh Tao offers a "take you to your hotel" ground service which was great, as I had booked the "Easy Time" on the opposite side of the island from where we arrived. The Easy Time had "pick up service", but it was the last thing on Massimo's mind, to pick us up. He was way too busy running the hotel, which he had designed. The restaurant, bar and computer were all open air and outside, no locks on anything. It was a great place and we also enjoyed Massimo, who was half Armenian and half Italian and had two foot long dreadlocks. What a wonderful restaurant. I had lasagne and Dane had a calzone, both meals remarkable. We really did not have enough time to enjoy Samui like we ... read more

In search of the perfect longtail boat driver...that's how we found Ed. Once we decided when we wanted to start (early as possible) and where we wanted to stop, we came back to his office which is a blue hammock tied to a coffee shop right on the beach, in sight of his longboat. Ed is one of those amazing Bob Marley incarnations that we are fortunate enough to find now and again. Always a fun time sharing the planet with those guys. As agreed, the next morning at 7a.m., we found him bailing out his boat and tidying up. To provide the shade he had promised, he simply borrowed a canopy from the boat next to his who was not using it at the time. Very neighborly. And just like that, long before the heat ... read more

Is there anyone, who at one time or another, didn't yearn to be on an exotic tropical island, about 8,000 miles from home, where the water is crystal clear, turquoise, and warm, the beaches are pure white like salt, and there are actually teak huts with thatched roofs, no glass in the windows and only the sound of gentle waves and jungle noises at night? When I booked the Sensi "Paradise" Resort, I didn't honestly EXPECT real paradise, but that is EXACTLY what we got. I won't even tell you how cheap. You will be so jealous. Well, it gets better. Not only is the the prettiest island I have EVER seen in my life, but the little town is just adorable. There are enough streets to make it interesting for shopping, eating, nightlife, and enough ... read more

Kanchanaburi In the interest of saving time and still seeing as much as possible close to Bangkok, we signed up with a mini tour (8 people) to take us to Kanchanaburi, made famous by the 1957 movie, "Bridge on the River Kwai". I was not prepared for the beautifully maintained cemetery grounds, or the poignant words inscribed on the headstones. There, in simple eloquence, parents, wives, siblings, children and other relatives spoke last sentences to soldiers who lost their lives in unspeakable conditions, as slave laborers on the Death Railway. The Thais have enormous respect and appreciation for these soldiers, and it's obvious by how well they maintain all the displays. There are books written on this subject, so I won't go into any detail, but it's very interesting and very emotional. The river was much ... read more

(Click "view full entry". When you are finished, click on "next entry". We knew when we left Thailand in 2008 that we would come back. There was so much more to see and do, and we had never even been to the Grand Palace, which someone told us was one of the seven wonders of the world. There is no over-the-top word to describe it. To call it a "palace" is like calling the Louvre a "museum". Anyway, We arrived at our hotel near the airport just after midnight on May 26, 2010. Morning arrived and as we stepped outside into the convection oven that is Bangkok, we wondered how we could have possibly forgotten how hot it is...we needed a day just to get ourselves acclimated, and over a couple of Thai ice teas, decided ... read more

My best tip would be to make sure you have a great travel agent like ours who will book you a flight on Singapore Airlines. You will be treated like royalty. The attendants are amazing and stunning in their jewel-like uniforms with impeccable manners. You can order special food ahead of your flight, like "Vegetarian, no MSG" and they will come beforehand and make sure you like the FOUR meals you are going to be served! Second "in flight" tip is to walk around whenever you get the chance, or you may find your feet have swollen and you can't get your shoes on the next day. Which is fine, because you will have a great excuse to take naps and keep your feet up at the pool all day. Third, once you have arrived, DON'T ... read more

Our story continues from the previous blog. Ming told us only that we were going to a river that runs back and forth into the sea, so we were not prepared for an everglade so gorgeous that tears sprang to our eyes in wonder. My heart ached just looking at it, being actually IN it, like some kind of artist's animation or even a wide-awake-blue-ray-dream. The color of the water glowed; supernaturally verdant and luminous, so alive, so radiantly ALIVE. The twisted and gnarly mangrove trees had roots growing up out of the water around their own trunks and then down again, very slender, very graceful, everything seemed magical and enchanted. We didn't want to say a word to spoil the silence. We were able to walk all around on a well constructed six foot wide ... read more

Only two days left, and we are wondering why we didn't arrange to stay longer. Our list of "must sees" now turns into "hope we have time". I am anxious because I haven't even experienced all of the resort, we have only eaten at two of the twelve restaurants, and I still can't get around without the map! We squeezed in our last activities: intro to Thai language, dancing, and origami, which I flunked, but excelled in Yogilates, Ab torture & stretch, and finished well on a wonderful sunset bicycle ride. We bought a last bunch of bananas for Yum Yum, but how do you say goodbye to an elephant? When it came down to deciding where we wanted to go, we chose to try for "Krabi" and we would have to go through Phang Nga, ... read more
