Thunupa The Thunupa volcano is the faithful guardian of the town of Salinas Marka located in the department of Oruro Bolivia, a beauty of landscape and ancient culture for the Aymara communities of the region.
Thunupa Thank you for the information in your comment Mario. Thunupa is also a volcano of extraordinary beauty that is truly a guardian that inspires. Thank you for sharing.
Good friends are everywhere Always a pleasure to read about friends....they are everywhere if you look. Always time well spent, even if it's been a long while.....The Dangerous One
Good friends are everywhere One of the beauties of Travelblog is good friends are there for connecting with in the ether and opening the opportunity for meeting and even for traveling with in reality. That's how Denise & I met some mighty travelers including you guys, Dangerous One & MJ...it doesn't get better than that!!!
A good History of Sikhs sperad acroos the world You narrated it well, Dave. Actually Nairobi has a huge Sikh diaspora, many have migrated to England, but roots are still there. My brother-in-law is a Punjabi (not sikh, but Hindu Punjabi), so I had experience of visiting many Sikh families when I was in Nakuru. As a matter of fact, I was fortunate to spend one night in the famous Gurdwara in Makindu on our way to Tsavo. Canada also has a huge establishment of Sikh communities all across the country. Like in India, Sikh in Canada contribute to Canada's large farm products and they are hard working. Thanks for the blog, Dave.
A good History of Sikhs spread across the world Glad you logged on to be able to see this blog, Tab, considering your connection with Punjab and the subcontinent. The history of the Sikh religion and Empire is the stuff of legends which its community are determined it endure. To enter a Sikh temple and be led to be served to eat is an experience that is impossible to not feel touched.
Sikh & Ye Shall Find Nice to read your always very entertaining & informative blogs Dave! Wow what amazing info on the Sikh community, and you are right, Canada has a very healthy population of Sikh's. Half a million in a relatively small country (33 million). One of our political leaders is Sikh; Jagmeet Singh is the leader of the NDP party here. In our recent election last month, at least 18 Sikhs were voted to the Canadian Parliament. I loved hearing about your friends & their homes. Wow. How do I get friends like that Dave. :) What a beautiful experience. I'm looking forward to catching up on your blogs my friend. You're one of my all time favorites. : Sal Gal/Playagal
Sikh & Ye Shall Find Thanks for the info on Sikh representation in Canada, Sal. I would like to have provided more info on the achievements of the 10 Sikh Gurus and the torture some endured for their faith as it would provide rivetting reading. But 'tis hoped the history I provide gives a hint of the fascinating. This blog was also for friendships forged from travelling which for us are priceless.
Sorry about the cancelled Bluesfest So sorry to hear that the Bluesfest cancelled. I have understood that it is something you really looked forward to. Two weeks ago I went to a concert for the first time in almost two years (seated audience, limited size of audience and seating separated to avoid mixing of people in separate parties). By the way, you might know who the musician is. His name is Per Gessle and he was half of the duo Roxette that were quite popular in late 1980-ies and early 1990-ies. He is still touring and making music. It felt really good to hear music live again. I've been missing that. /Ake
Sorry about the cancelled Bluesfest Hi Ake. Per Gessle from Roxette...glad you took the chance to experience such a blast from the past. We have supported a lot of live music over the years as 'if there are no bums on seats they can't afford to play'. Then Covid hit and live music died. We have been to a few live gigs since and each time the band has been exuberant as it was the first time they had played for over a year...brilliant gigs that only live can bring. Then the Delta strain hit. Check out TB's 'Surviving Covid-19...the Music' thread in the Word Music Forum to lift your spirits.
Yamba Been staying there at least once a year for the last 20 years. Best kept secret on the north coast since Byron was betrayed to the kiddie tourists. Sadly, the best caravan site which was off the main road and quiet has closed down and turned in to a retirement village.
Yamba Understand why you have enjoyed its charms for 20 years, John, but not the best kept secret any more. Many years ago we pitched a tent under a tree at a caravan park next to a Yamba Beach that is no more. When we were there recently the brochures were spruiking Yamba as the next Byron Bay, so that's a worry but to us 'I don't think so'!!!
You are good at switching to Plan B... a much valued attribute in this age. So you get to see Scottish Highland Games and mine are put off for another year.
You are good at switching to Plan B... For us travel is two thirds attitude and one third luck...'cos one cannot exist without some luck. Taken many years for me to score such good surfing shots as on page 5 of my blog. But you are so widely travelled Bob, that I kinda think yours is nine tenths attitude and one tenth luck. Hope your one tenth does not leave you much longer to wait.
an excellent recap of the terrible times in the US As you laid out so well the US has been going through some very difficult times. We also were reminded of coups in other nations never imagining it would be happening here in the US. It will be a steep hill to climb to bring the country back together but hopefully we will manage it. We have to keep positive thoughts about that as the alternative is not the country we have always been proud about. The world is definitely watching and we hope we can become the country that is a viable member of the world community again. Thanks for your efforts in doing such a wonderful job of presenting this topic
an excellent recap of the terrible times in the US Your's is the sort of comment Janice that gives me confidence that with enough like-minded folk there is hope for the USA. I like you fear for the alternative. Must confound you with thoughts of sailing into the sunset to escape it all. But what will you find when you return?
Guilty as Charged David, such an excellent indepth damming information of the guilt of the President. But, except for a few of the Republicans, the rest were too scared to publicly find him guilty. If it was a secret ballot then the verdict would have been very different.
Guilty as Charged Thank you Cass and I believe you are right. If it was a secret ballot Trump may have been indicted. I regard the "weak Republicans" as not the ones Trump pointed out in his speech on 6 Jan, but the ones who were too afraid to support the impeachment for fear of political demise in the Primaries. I was pleased that what I said in my blog has been confirmed in later investigation, except the issue of whether he could continue to receive the perks of past Presidents seemed to have been ignored notwithstanding it came under a different section of the US Constitution.
The burning of Washington From Wikipedia....
"The Burning of Washington was a British invasion of Washington City (now Washington, D.C.), the capital of the United States, during the Chesapeake Campaign of the War of 1812. To this date, it remains the only time since the American Revolutionary War that a foreign power has captured and occupied the capital of the United States.
Following the defeat of American forces at the Battle of Bladensburg on August 24, 1814, a British force led by Major General Robert Ross marched to Washington. That night, British forces set fire to multiple government and military buildings, including the White House (then called the Presidential Mansion), the Capitol building, as well as other facilities of the U.S. government.[3] The attack was in part a retaliation for the recent American destruction of Port Dover in Upper Canada, as well as American forces burning and looting the capital of Upper Canada the previous year.[4] Less than a day after the attack began, a heavy thunderstorm —possibly a hurricane — and a tornado extinguished the fires. The occupation of Washington lasted for roughly 26 hours, and what the British plans were beyond the damage are still a subject of debate."
The burning of Washington Thank you John for the further information on the 1814 burning of the US Capital, Washington DC. In the current situation with the Impeachment Trial Of Trump, if ever there was a mirror of the moral decay that led to the Fall of Rome, this is it.
My wife Denise & I like to travel "on paths less travelled" that capture our imagination, inspire my photography & where we mix with locals & remain safe.
