Put a sock on it! An amazing collection of pelican poses. Those with the head thrown back and the beak pointing to the sky above took just a moment to comprehend. They look like someone put a sock over them from the beak and up past the head down the neck.
Wonderful faces Nothing better than a friendly face and a card with your name on it greeting you at the airport! I need to learn more about adventures in the Stans. Sounds like they would be right up my alley...one day.
Wonderful faces Thanks Tommy. We met so many fabulous folk in Uzbekistan that I introduced some of them before I blogged the fantastic times we had. This was our last trip pre-Covid and I kinda think my hermit status since has dulled my sharing gene. Just had our vac boosters so maybe that will kick me to get out more!!!
The Stans - we so want to go We have for several years been talking about that we want to go to the Stans. There are several places there I want to visit and I am sure that there are hundreds of places that I've never heard of that are worth visiting too. But what really makes me want to go to the Stans are all the places where the names sound so exotic, like they came straight out of One Thousand and One Nights. Samarkand, Tashkent, Ashgabat... /Ake
The Stans - we so want to go For us in Australia to get to the Stans is an ordeal indeed as no direct route is available to those Down Under. Yet for resourceful Swedes as you and Emma are, Ake...should be easy. Maybe to run a half-marathon in the High Pamir of Tajikistan, or along the Old Silk Road past the Registan in Samarkand, Uzbekistan or maybe the wide open plains of Kazakhstan. Your running shoes will be spoilt with choice. Dream on my friend...then make it happen.
I've always enjoyed your portraits of people... I tend to take pictures of scenery, but portraits are better at telling the story of a country. And thanks again for the memories of my time in Uzbekistan.
I've always enjoyed your portraits of people... Uzbekistan has to be the friendliest country we have travelled in, Bob. I had difficulty choosing the portraits for this blog I had so many. Really made for a wonderous time as we travelled through the jewel of the Old Silk Road. Truly was highlighted by the people we met. Now gotta make the time to prepare the blogs to do the Uzbeks' justice!
On 'Terror in Tunisia' Actually, I have scanned the photos from Tunisia and plan to write blogs about that trip. If things go as planned these will be written within a few months. I will probably include the two scary stories, because the 'Terror in Tunisia' story is only one of two events that could have ended badly on that trip. /Ake
Trippin'.... around the world Dancing One you do seem to have trouble following you from one adventure to the next. I was tense the entire time I was reading. You do write with passion and intensity. Thank you for the word pictures! Travel memories..... and great stories.
Trippin'.... around the world I found it interesting MJ that my bedside reading of "Bad Trips" described them as the most terrifying to the most uncomfortable...and even the most boring. You know Denise and I...we don't do boring!!! Thank you as you were the one that approached me in my Travelblog early days when blogging Mali to write stories to go with my photos. This blog is the result of your encouragement across the ether...pictures in words can be as vibrant as the most vivid photographs. And for this Terror story I posted some of my favourite portraits. If it wasn't for Travelblog and its colourful characters, like you guys,,,I wouldn't have the opportunity to do that. Thanks for your kind words...much appreciated.
Can't remember ever seen any Sikh in Sweden We in Sweden has also throughout history had the pleasure to welcome many immigrants. But very few of them must have been Sikhs because I can't remember ever having seen one in Sweden. But I have seen Sikhs elsewhere. For instance in and around the Golden Temple of Amritsar. That was in the years before I started writing blogs so we haven't written about that. /Ake
Can't remember ever seen any Sikh in Sweden That's interesting Ake as Sikhs are also in Iceland as my blog attests. The research for my blog had me intrigued to visit the Golden Temple at Amritsar, but with travel restrictions and Covid as it is, India seems but a dream. Pity that!
Not writing a story of my own I was about to write down the story of a nightmare ride I had in a bus in Tunisia many years ago. But once I reas your story I decided not to. Even though I thought I was going to die that night in Tunisia, I have to admit your ride must have been a lot worse. Yikes! /Ake
Not writing a story of my own Only yesterday I was reminded of a time I was climbing a volcanic extrusion called the Butterknife adjacent to the Breadknife in the Warrumbungles in NSW, when I suddenly went from the leeward to the windward and froze for fear of being blown off. Denise had to talk me down. That forgotten event was much more terrifying than the one I've just told. Please write your 'Terror in Tunisia' Ake, so it awakens the memory, lest it be forgotten if not told.
The Day the Music Died Well that was another fun read Dave! Talk about changing things on a dime. But the Scottish Festival seemed to make up for things. Did you happen to don a kilt Dave? Send photos! HEH HEH :) By the way, in Canada I listen to a station called CBC Radio 2, & they introduce music from around the world. Funny enough they played a song by Tash Sultana & I was like, wow! She's a one person band dynamo. Always love your blogs; makes me & me kilt happy. (And I'm Irish so that tells you a lot!) Wink wink!
The Day the Music Died Unfortunately Tash Sultana will not be at Bluesfest 2022 but Midnight Oil, Chain, Geoff Achison & the Souldiggers and the Dancing Duo will be. As in The Small Faces song "Lazy Sunday"..."How's your bird's lumbago Mrs Jones?"..."Musn't grumble".
The Terror... Sweet Jaysus, I had to put on a seatbelt just to read this! What the hell...at least the Uber driver helped you with your luggage after that suicidal ride. Aww Dave, it makes for a great blog. That's what my hubby says when things happen to us. It'll make for a good blog. Glad you're safe. And I second Bob, what the F? Got shot in the back, robbed of your passport? I think you need to stay at home lad! :) Always a fan...Your Gal Sal :)
The Terror... You are a master of words Sal...great comment that brought the laugh from within. May not have been fun at the time but great memories do not come from the dull or mundane. Like the taxi ride in Zigong Sthn China with Denise & our kids that did not make my blog...one hand on the wheel, ciggie in his mouth overtaking cars on blind bends on a wet greasy dirt road. We survived that one too!!!
The Terror Sometimes the best thing to do in those situations, whether it be plane turbulence or a lunatic driver, is just to close your eyes and think of it as a ride. Not much else you can do. At least you wouldn't have given the guy the satisfaction. Great story of travel terror, though!
The Terror Not a time to close one's eyes Tommy though it may have worked if Denise was not in the back. I have a book titled 'Bad Trips' for bedside reading which prompted me to pen my Terror Tale which is well and truly up there. Glad you enjoyed the ride!
Good grief!!! Never a dull moment Bob. Never liked the word "relaxing". Nor do I like reading or engaging with mobile phones while travelling lest I miss something. Yet with our Uber from VKO to DME I could not close my eyes for different reasons! Thanks for checking in.
My wife Denise & I like to travel "on paths less travelled" that capture our imagination, inspire my photography & where we mix with locals & remain safe.
