Vietnam.... A How To Guide for travelling in a G-String, on a Shoestring with the Courage of a Pirate!!!!!

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Khanh Hoa » Nha Trang October 11th 2010

11th October 2010 We caught a taxi for some sightseeing and headed to the Po Nagar Cham Towers. Initially there stood ten towers which had been built by the Hindu Cham People between the seventh and twelfth centuries however, only four remain. Whilst they are somewhat weathered by time and tourism the locals still come here to pray to their God for a prosperous life. A humbling sight to see as they kneel and pray and light incense sticks as a gratuitous gesture to the Gods. Our taxi, which had patiently been waiting drove us to our next stop, the Thap Ba Hot Springs. Here we were to bath in mineral mud to sooth the ailments of western life and in-liven our skin. We were escorted to our own private mud-tub and looked on in amusement ... read more

9th - 10th October 2010 Welcome to Nha Trang We clambered off the plane and into a bus for the 40km trip from the airport to Nha Trang "City", we were pretty stoked that we were able to organise a bus ride (our first so far) as we were the only foreigners on it and it was half the price of a taxi, therefore saving us $2. I guess were starting to get into the tight-arse backpacker way of life... The bus driver must have been getting paid per horn 'toot' as he was on it more often than not and coupled with his crazy driving made for an exciting if not a little anxious trip to the sea-side town of Nha Trang. Of course we got lost on our way to finding The Golden Lotus, ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta » Kien Giang » Phu Quoc Island October 6th 2010

6th - 9th October 2010 Phu Quoc Island Wednesday morning came too early for some of us - one very sick boy (self inflicted though!). Upstairs to the restaurant we went for omlette and bacon before it all came back up again for Chris.... Anyway, onwards and upwards we went. Managed to catch a cab to the airport and find the domestic terminal. We found Vietnam Airlines ok and were bumped on to an earlier flight to Phu Quoc Island. Chris stepped onto the plane and straight into the toilet to have another look at his breakfast! Anyway, we landed on Phu Quoc and were standing around waiting for our bags when Chris saw his name pop up on a computer screen for the hotel we were staying at. We splurged a little at Phu Quoc ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City » District 1 October 4th 2010

4th - 6th October 2010 (Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City) So... we landed in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh to you non-locals) at about 9:20pm local time. We exited the plane and walked into the customs area. Barely any security - just a normal metal detector thing and then we were outside. As soon as we stepped out of the doors of the airport, we were surrounded by taxi drivers. Being very naive and not really having a clue as to what to expect, we jumped in a cab with some crazy dude. It turns out we were over charged by an extortionate amount however it was our own fault for not being more alert to the system. As soon as we jumped in the cab, the driver started reversing the wrong way through the carpark ... read more

Saturday 2nd October 2010 - Ingham To celebrate leaving Ingham we decided to party with some friends and a pigeon. Dan made some sausage rolls however Prue's dodgy oven wouldnt work so we had to carry them down the road to another friend's house to cook them, they were delicious thank you honey. The stupid iPhone woke us up an hour early thanks to daylight saving and we were on our way to Cairns where Kuta dropped us off at the Airport and promised to take good care of the Prado. We entered the Cairns International Airport for our flight to Darwin - it was a connecting flight for people travelling to Singapore. We had no idea what to expect inside the international airport and passports came in and out of our bags a thousand times ... read more
