Those of you who are not generous of nature will be glad to know that this morning was a cloudy one with the temperature at 56 degrees first thing. However, the humidity is still quite low at 44%. Not too shabby! If we could, we would send some of this back to you. Since we can’t...we will just continue to enjoy! We had a very light breakfast today because of our plans to walk back downtown and have lunch at the Alpine Inn, which we have been told is the best restaurant in town. We would certainly not argue with anyone on that particular issue. We got there about 12:30 and had a short wait before being seated in one of the several dining rooms. The place was packed, and after we had our delicious meal ... read more

We can explain...well, really, no we can’t... Yesterday afternoon we left you with the information that we were going to walk downtown and if anything happened, we would report on it today. Well...it really is a sad tale, and it is all Lora C’s fault. She wanted a picture of a bakery. Well, we walked to the end of town and started back up when we spied Turtle Town Candy Shop. We walked inside and I took a picture of their candy display. It is lovely as I am sure you will agree. Even though it looked delicious, we bravely left Turtle Town and continued our walk up Main Street towards our campground at the other end of town. As luck would have it, we passed Hill City Cafe and Bakery. We walked inside but didn‘t ... read more

What can I say—another beautiful morning. I would say that it is getting boring...but it isn’t! Since it was such a pretty day John came up with the idea to call a local company, Ken’s Hill City Tours and Taxi, to see if it was possible to get a driving tour of the Needles Highway. It was a wonderful drive the other day even in the rain, but we thought that since we were here and don’t know when or if ever we will be back it would be nice to see that area in bright sunshine. As luck would have it, we got Ken himself (the owner of the company) on the phone and he said that he had a couple of hours open today. That sounded great to us, so we made an appointment ... read more

Our intention today was to have a very slow one...and that was more or less what we did...kinda, sorta! We were up fairly early but that was because we were in bed last night fairly early. We took our time getting cleaned up and then having a late breakfast. Our morning was spectacular with cool temps (44 at 5:45 this morning) and a brilliant sun in crystal clear blue sky—just the way we like it. Of course, the humidity is very low here and the sun did warm us up quickly. Since we are so close to town—actually we are on the outside edge of Hill City—we decided to walk down the “rails to trails” path that goes right through our camp ground. We had intended to make a 2 mile or so walk into town ... read more

Well here I am rested up and ready to tackle catching everyone up on our marvelous day yesterday, as well as what has gone on today. It is amazing what a good night’s sleep will do. By the way Brently—here is the weather report for you...when we got up this morning it was 56 degrees outside and 60 degrees inside. You can shudder now... YESTERDAY Picking up at Custer State Park just after we left our gentlemen with the well pedigreed Ford truck at the Blue Bell Lodge: Wildlife Loop Road We continued on our road trip up the Wildlife Loop Road. It is a 18 mile road that takes visitors through open grasslands and pine-speckled hills that much of the park’s wildlife call home. On this drive we saw Prairie Dogs, deer (and one precious ... read more

Note on yesterday after I sent the blog posting—a BIG storm hit at 5:30 local time including heavy wind, rain, and hail!! Luckily the hail wasn’t too terribly bad and we didn’t have any damage. Note of interest to family—Today is Daniel Conner’s 25th birthday. How in the world did we ever get old enough to have a Grandson that age?? Happy Birthday, Daniel! We were up very early to facilitate getting on the road for a big travel day in a rental car. Things got complicated with our rental due to the fact of a miscommunication between the front office and the gentleman who rented the car for the previous two days. It took almost an hour to get that straightened out so we were a little later getting started than we had planned, finally ... read more

We pulled out of camp at 9:00 into an already warm morning at close to 80 degrees! By the way, concerning our report of the power outage last night—we did finally get some juice about five minutes before we would have decided to move on. John was especially glad because this was a “full hookup” night in preparation for dumping the sewer this morning. Those of you who don’t RV go ahead and gag. Those who do RV know that the process of unhooking water, electric and sewer just after going to the trouble to hook up to all three (especially when you are tired) and heading down the road another 20 miles would NOT be something that you would jump for joy over having to do! At any rate, power was restored and we were ... read more

We woke up to a stormy looking sky...really scary looking to our west and south. We got cleaned up and then prepared Mufasa to leave camp before having breakfast. It actually was quite nice having breakfast in our little cocoon as we had the windows open and thus had a nice comfortable breeze coming through the RV. We pulled out of camp at 9:30 and headed north towards Sioux Falls. As we headed north, we realized that we were pulling away from the Lewis and Clark Trail as the Missouri River was now further to our west. Our big shock of the morning was the fact that the speed limit on South Dakota Interstates is 80 MPH!!! Wowzer for sure! Our drive this morning had some variations. We moved out of the Missouri River delta area ... read more

As a note of interest today: we were on or were very near to 5 different trails today. The California was as it sounds, the route that many took going west. The Mormons left from Council Bluffs/Omaha area. The Oregon Trail left from St. Joseph, Lewis and Clark came up the Missouri here (a shout out to Rhonda and Larry with whom we made the L & C Trail adventure with in 2001!!), and the Pony Express left from here! Whew! All of these trails crossed and recrossed each other on their way west. We mostly followed the Missouri River today and thus The Lewis and Clark Trail. We passed the monument to Sargent Floyd who was the only one on the L & C Expedition that died. The thought is that he died of appendicitis ... read more

We weren’t sure what we would want to do today, but we decided that even though the campground we were in is very nice and our site is a good one, the negative is that the power is weak as is the wifi. Since it was forecast to be fairly hot today we were worried that we might have trouble with our AC...NOT a good thing when the weather is hot and humid for sure! Therefore, we pulled out of camp at 10:00 heading north towards St. Joseph, MO. Driving out through Branson, we were amazed at the growth of the town and the huge improvements to the road system there. Our drive today consisted of lovely views of wooded hills which perch upon high rock faces. Our trek took us onto plateaus that had green ... read more
