Sunday, 30 May It was eight O'clock in the morning and I had just closed the garage door and started a four and half hour drive to Griffith. It didn't take long to get into the right frame of mind for traveling. I have no trouble relaxing while driving long distances and many thoughts go through my mind. Planning my future, reflecting on times gone by and think how lucky I am to be able to see so many parts of south east Australia and get paid for the privilege. In fact after this week in Griffith I may have to work in Melbourne; the very thought of that leaves me feeling very uneasy. Almost every working week this year I'v been in some country town, either in Victoria or New South Wales and more then ... read more

Monday, 24 May Two other trips away before this one. Mooroopna near Shepperton and another visit to Warrnambool. Both uneventful trips. This morning I waited for the peak hour traffic to subside before leaving home. Joined the Caulder Highway just outside of Melbourne. It was a bleak morning. The clouds over head looked as if rain was going to fall at any moment. In fact as the day drew on, it became fine and I later heard it was the warmest 24 of May on record (twenty one degrees) When I arrived in Sealake I had travelled close to four-hundred kilometers from home and the weather was now quite warm. Its been two years since I had worked in this town and decided to visit the pre-school to refresh my memory as to where it was ... read more

Sunday, 9 May I didn’t leave home until ten this morning and made my way onto the Hume Freeway by way of Yea, through Bonnie Doon to Benalla, The weather was good throughout the eight-hour drive to the nation’s capital. Found my way to the Rex Hotel. This time my room was on the first floor with a balcony that overlooked the hotels air-conditioner units. I tried two places for a meal that evening, both without luck, either too busy or booked out. In the end settled for take-away. Where I was staying there was a door leading to an adjoining room and through the door; I could hear the occupant’s conversations. Went down to the reception to ask for another room. Ten minutes later back at the room I packed up my gear and moved ... read more

Sunday 2 May 2004 Just after one in the afternoon, I left my driveway, heading out of town for another country job. I needed a change in direction; instead of going through Yarra Glen, I followed the Maroondah Highway through Healesville, then over the Black Spur to Alexandra. A short time later, the road joins the Yea Road, which in turn passes through Bonnie Doon. It was a nice change and the traffic was light. By four o’clock, I had arrived at the Commodore Motor Inn, located in the centre of Albury. As I walked into the reception, I noticed on the door it was a three and half-star complex. The room seemed to be larger than the room I stayed in, on a recent trip to Canberra. I unloaded the car and made myself comfortable ... read more

Sunday, 25 April Anzac Day March. Every year the company I work for, send half a dozen photographers to document the event. I always make myself available to join them. This year I had asked and was granted the same area as I had worked last year, between Bourke and Collins Street at the Spring Street end of Melbourne. My job is to ask the marchers if they want a photograph to remember the event. When they say "Yes" I take the shot then hand them a reference card. The company make the shots available to buy at a later stage. The first person I asked, declined and that response made me feel uneasy. Others were different and I soon had one spool exposed. The diggers you meet and talk to at this event are friendly ... read more

Monday, 19 April The Caulder Highway takes you from Melbourne towards the town of Hopetoun in the northwest of Victoria. I decided to stay at the Hopetoun Hotel/Motel. The rooms are pretty basic but the meals are the good old country style which suits me down to the ground. After a short walk around town I found the Kindergarten I was to work in the next day. For the life of me I could not remember being there before but there wasn't another centre in town so it must have been the same one I had visited two years earlier. On the outskirts of town I took a long walk around Lake Lascelles. It has been more then a couple of years since it has seen any water. This drought is evident in many places I ... read more

Sunday, 4 April It was a cool start to the day. I put the last of the gear into the car and followed my usual route towards the Hume Freeway via Yea. Along the way I passed through countryside still brown from the summer heat and Lake Eldon at Bonnie Doon still had no water. As I crossed the bridge I remembered in my youth spending time on a power boat under this very bridge. At Benalla you join the Hume Freeway and don't leave it until Goulbourn where the road branches south to the Barten Highway which in turn leads all the way into the nations capital city of Canberra. The weather was fine, in fact by time I arrived at the Rex Hotel I was down to my T-Shirt. At the reception they gave ... read more

Sunday, 21 March It took an hour to reach Gembrook. I parked the car outside the Puffin Billy railway station and waited for another photographer to arrive. Our assignment was to photograph the scouts being presented with awards at Gillwell Park. As usual I had arrived ages before we had arranged to meet. This gave me a chance to catch up on some sleep. We hadn't seen each other for a while and over a cup of coffee, supplied by the friendly ladies of the scout movement we took the opportunity to find out what had been happening since we last worked together. The "shoot" started around nine o'clock. For the first hour members of each troop wanted group photos so they could be forwarded to their local newspapers. When the Governor arrived, we were introduced ... read more

Sunday, 14 March Four hours driving had me arriving in the east Gippsland town of Bairnsdale. After booking into a motel I realised there was still a few hours before the sun was due to set. The weather was fine so I drove south out of town to Paynesville to see if the town had changed much since my last visit. The area has a population of a little over two thousand. The foreshore has fishing boats moored and ready to set sail on the morning tide. The town is situated on the straits between Lake King and Lake Victoria. For me, not much had changed which is a common observation of so many towns I revisit. On the way back to my motel I diverted to Eagle Point. The Mitchell River Silt Jetty is a ... read more

Wednesday, 25 February Towards the end of last year I had pretty well made up my mind that enough was enough and photographing little children would not be my main stay of employment in 2004. In the long break that took in November and December of last year until now, I did the occasional wedding and a few other photographic jobs including formals and a large university graduation. Yesterday I drove from Melbourne to Portland and spent what was left of the afternoon resting in the motel room with the Discovery Channel playing on TV. It also gave me an opportunity to find out some interesting facts about the area. It seems Portland was Victoria's first permanent European settlement. One of the early families to make a living in the area were the Henty's. They owned ... read more
