Sunday 2 May 2004 Just after one in the afternoon, I left my driveway, heading out of town for another country job.
I needed a change in direction; instead of going through Yarra Glen, I followed the Maroondah Highway through Healesville, then over the Black Spur to Alexandra. A short time later, the road joins the Yea Road, which in turn passes through Bonnie Doon. It was a nice change and the traffic was light.
By four o’clock, I had arrived at the Commodore Motor Inn, located in the centre of Albury. As I walked into the reception, I noticed on the door it was a three and half-star complex. The room seemed to be larger than the room I stayed in, on a recent trip to Canberra. I unloaded the car and made myself comfortable for the next four nights.
The motel is within a dozen steps to the main street and remarkably quiet at night. A very nice meal at the pub just round the corner.
Monday 3 May 2004 I slept well last night and woke up around six-thirty in the morning. Had a shower, drank a couple cups of coffee. On the job card, I noticed the starting time was nine o’clock. I was only a few kilometres from the centre and left half an hour before I was due to set up.
Just after nine the director arrived which gave me a chance to chat with her and then one by one the staff arrived. After another cup of coffee in the staffroom, we waited for the children to arrive. It was another hour before I fired my first shot.
This is a great Kindergarten. The ladies at this centre are very friendly and helpful which allows me to work at a leisurely pace as I photograph the children, inside, outside, portraits and finally a group shot. Today I only had to work in the morning.
Seven o’clock that night I had to return to the centre to photograph the staff and board members.
When I got back from the Kindergarten, I had a meal then spent a bit of time photographing the Post Office, which was bathed in lights. Using a long time exposure, it came up well.
Tuesday 4 May 2004 The mini flood of eighteen children went ahead at the expected time. I was able to start with the portraits. It did not take long to finish the inside shots and within no time was outside setting up for the activities. When that was finished, I only had the group shot to do.
Before lunch I was able to start on the afternoon children and had their portraits “In the can” by mid-day.
The afternoon session went without stress. The weather did not look good, so we did the second group shot for the day soon after the children finished their lunch.
The afternoon session finished around two-thirty, which gave me time to post Monday and Tuesday’s exposed films back to Melbourne.
Waited the rest of the afternoon for the meals at the local pub to start. Once again I chose to eat at the Bar and Bistro in the Dean Street.
After which I has a long phone conversation with my girlfriend before getting an early night. Working morning and afternoon sessions wear me out.
Wednesday 5 May 2004 An early finish had me wondering the streets of Albury in search of something interesting to do. Been to this town so many times in the past that I have visited all sights that interests me. One more day to go!
