Friday, October 22 The wind was whistling over our heads when we pulled out this morning, listening to Chris’ complaints of slipped disks and ripped neck muscles. They think our alternator is screwy. The sails filled as soon as we left the channel, the motor was cut, and we cruised today. It was probably the fastest we’ve gone. There are huge, gorgeous, rolling swells out in the open. I getting the hang of anticipating when the center of gravity of the boat will shift at the crest and we begin the slide down into the trough. I actually spent much of the morning inside writing away, by hand, as my computer is not starting. Not sure if it didn’t charge in Tilos or if getting wet has fried the whole thing… Just after noon there was ... read more

Thursday, October 21 We planned for an early start today, but didn’t get going until eleven. When I woke up this morning much of the cabin had little puddles of water everywhere, including the computer/navigator desk, so all of our maps are soggy and my computer is feeling under the weather. We’ll see if it starts. The wind is coming from a bit off due south, and we are headed nearly due south, so we have the motor on, as well as the two sails up, in order to be able to head a bit too far into the wind without lofting. This is what they tell me, I really have no idea what it all means, but I smile and nod. I’m starting to figure it out. I spent all day up on deck, sizzling ... read more

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 We discovered that today is NOT Thursday, as we had thought yesterday. Slow morning. Really calm when we woke up but within minutes it was pouring rain for about a half hour. This was our hint about what day it was. Battery will NOT charge past 11.2 V, just enough to drag the anchor up three links. It was so clear after two hours that we decided to sail but we were stalled by the battery’s inability to haul up the anchor. Kar and I abandoned the guys to figure that one out and headed over to the shore in the refueled dinghy. We officially have the “first in the Med” prize on the crew. I swam out to the crane that’s left out off the shore but the water around it ... read more

Tuesday, October 19 Scattered rain showers all day, but the temperature is so warm, and the wind isn’t cutting like it can be at home, so it’s really nice to be out. I had kiwi yoghurt this morning for breakfast, which is delicious. Kar and I headed over to do some more intensive exploration on the island at about ten thirty. The rocky shore is covered in black sea urchins that are apparently harvested. We found piles of empty shells behind one of the buildings. The buildings are definitely WWII German military. The coast pilot book thing here describes a cartoon written by one of the soldiers that was stationed here. I’d like to see if I can find it. There is a much older structure right besides one of the bunker/ buildings. It is circular ... read more

Monday, October 18 Transcription. I am having the best day yet, though writing by cloud obscured moonlight is a little difficult. I woke up at fourish this morning and couldn’t go back to sleep. I think I did my math wrong and thought that it was near sunrise. Plus I’m obviously more jetlagged than I had thought. Karleen was also up, so we played cards for a while, probably until about six, and then I sat down to read and slept until eleven, when Kar woke me so I could join them for breakfast. We had a strange breakfast of flattened eggs, grilled ham and cheese, and jam on “rusks”. We didn’t know what that was either, it’s ok. After eating we wandered up into town. Karleen was looking for the school, so we tagged along ... read more

Sunday, October 18 I am wide awake at three o’clock in the morning, sitting in my little cabin wishing it wasn’t a bad idea to go exploring by myself at this hour. It is the first time I have been truly awake since Thursday. I really had no idea how long the trip here would take! We left around nine thirty Thursday evening and arrived in Rhodes, where we picked up our boat, yesterday at four in the afternoon. It’s like Friday never happened! I did write a little yesterday, but I was so tired that my entry is nearly illegible. There is such a sense of disorientation when I fly, perhaps more and more so. Anyway, long trip aside, just the fact that I am here is surreal! Visiting Greece has been on my list ... read more

6 months late... Monday, May 21st I am EXHAUSTED after last night’s flying fiasco and a little nervous about starting the field school a week late. At least I know almost everyone on the crew. I had to get up really early this morning to make it to Lander and pack before 8, but it was also nice to get the update from Adrienne before we started, so I don’t feel that much out of the loop. We met at the Lander CWC Center at 8 this morning, though only half of us made it. There was a bit of car trouble and such, so I guess the rest of the group are joining us either at the highway or at camp. Buying groceries was interesting. We must have had four carts out there, with people ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida March 20th 2010

Wow, it's been a while since I posted anything, hasn't it? It's certainly not because I haven't had any adventures, but I guess I've just been so busy having them that I haven't had time to write about them! Right now I am reclining on my king sized bed in my hotel room in Merida, staring at all of the notes I have made about cows, sheep, globalization, "Andean culture", and I have no idea where to go from here, so I'm going to give a rest and write about my day, even if it hasn't been terribly exciting. I flew out of Riverton yesterday, surprisingly reluctantly. I mean, Mexico! And it was starting to snow! I have really started to love that little corner of the world. Actually, corner is a misnomer, as that implies ... read more

South America » Peru » Ancash » Cordillera Blanca August 2nd 2009

I got up earlier than usual, around six thirty, so that I could get to the camal, or local slaughterhouse, and back before breakfast. Got directions from Patti, and took a wrong turn as soon as I got to the bottom of the hill, so I ended up at least a kilometer off in the wrong direction. It was fun though, I got all sorts of help form the local little old ladies. They loved telling La Gringa that she was WAY off from where she wanted to be. So I hiked back to the square and caught a moto-taxi, which is essentially a dirt bike with the rear wheel removed and replaced by an axle, upon which sits a canopied two person seat. Very interesting. It took me several minutes to convince my driver that, ... read more
