Our epic night the other night definitely meant that I slept well last night, though not for long enough. I had to repack and such, so I didn’t get to sleep until after midnight, and I had to be up to catch the train at five. Gross, but I think I’m on track with this whole time zone thing now. I’ll be totally flattened when I get back though! So my adventures yesterday. Let’s see. We went and bought our train tickets so that we didn’t have to do that super early in the morning. It was a very good idea, as I was barely functioning when I woke up today. Then we went for a little walk to Ste. Elizabeth’s Cathedral. Those buildings are so beautiful. This one was a fairly small cathedral, for a ... read more

June 3rd Wow, I though that being up until two would help me sleep for a long time, but nope, I woke up at 5:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep for EVER! I finally snoozed for about an hour between seven thirty and eight forty-five. Ouch. Elizabeth knocked on our door at nine and we were barely moving around. It is so hot here, and humid. Gah. So our plan for the day was to hike over to the Castle District in Buda and explore for a bit, and then maybe join Francis on a tour of the caves and such under the city. We made the hike, which was a bit longer than we were anticipating. Walks seem so much longer when it’s hot!! I wish I had a pedometer. I’m pretty sure we’ve ... read more

I am pretty excited about the next couple of weeks. I had an awesome day today. We got up early-ish (7:30, but after a long day, that’s early), had breakfast at the hotel, and then headed out exploring. We first checked out the train station directly across from us, as that is where we will be catching our early morning train to Cluj, and we wanted to scope it out. There are only two platforms. We’ll be golden. Then we struck out for the Danube, only a glance at our very touristy map after a half hour revealed our direction to be exactly opposite to the one we should have been heading, so we ditched the river idea for the moment and continued on to see where our little utca, or street, would take us. It ... read more

June 1st, 2011 It is eleven forty-five in the morning in Amsterdam, according to the clocks here. According to me, it is quarter to four in the morning and I’ve been staving off sleep in order to conform to the time zone I’ll be living in for the next nine weeks. * Yawn* Here are a few tips for future travelers: 1. Don’t put off packing until midnight the night before you leave, even if you don’t have much to pack. You’ll forget something and be seriously sleep deprived when you travel. 2. Taking only two bags doesn’t entirely count as packing light if you’re stuffing so much into your bags that you feel like you’re packing a sack of bricks around the airport. Ouch. 3. Don’t decide to do an intense hour and a half ... read more

Thursday, October 28 It rained all of last night, with some serious lightning and thunder happening, so this morning when we went out to explore Chania we lit a candle for the guys, for luck. Chania, when you aren’t driving, is really very beautiful. We explored all sorts of tiny alleys full of shops and little restaurants. I splurged and bought myself a foursome of BEAUTIFUL mugs for my apartment next semester. Really big ones I can hold with both hands and brightly coloured. There was some sort of military thing in the square this morning and we watched them getting all lined up. My FAVORITE part was the clarinet in the band who was warming up by playing the Star Wars theme! I wish Logan could have heard that. We decided to leave the big ... read more

Wednesday, October 27 I slept like the dead last night and woke up early, my hair exploding all over the place, courtesy of a humid climate and going to bed with wet hair. It was a bit grey in the morning. The continental breakfasts of Greece, much like those in Israel, put anything I’ve seen in the states to shame, maybe just because I love the yoghurt here. With a little thyme honey and pomegranate seeds? Heaven. I got to drive today, which is quite fun. As we are returning to Heraklion, to meet the guys and catch the plane, we headed on this morning to Rothymnon and beyond. It stared raining as soon as we left and continued on and off all day. I am sooo glad I’m not on the boat right now, only ... read more

Tuesday, October 26 Karleen got up this morning, at eight with the rest of us (Chris had the mechanic come at eight to check out the motor) and announced that she was done with the boat, that the guys could take it down the coast, but we were driving. Ok. Actually, by the time I got up at eight, she had been up for a hour and was fully packed. So as to avoid a hasty decision, we put it off, went window shopping, got breakfast, toured the town a little bit. There is a gorgeous lake right in the middle of Old Town where the four of us had brunch. All of one side is overgrown cliffs and olive trees, with a tiny white chapel in the middle of the trees. Colourful boats are tied ... read more

Monday, October 25. The morning dawned as calm as glass, and it was really absolutely gorgeous. So we pulled anchor and left. Hahaha. Ah well. The goal today was somethingorother starting with a “th” and we made it, smooth motoring all the way, which is good but still puzzling. Nix that, the harbour is called Agio Nicolaus...I think. Crete is gorgeous from the water. I really wish I could spend a bit more time on land exploring, if only to prevent this nasty habit of getting wobbly knees every time I step off deck. They have proper showers here, free to marina users! Yay! I don’t feel dirty hiking or camping for two weeks in a row, but there is something about being half damp all the time that makes me crave a hot shower. Preferably ... read more

Sunday, October 24 We’ve left! I really can’t explain why I wanted out so badly, except perhaps by saying that everyone we talked to there was either just visiting or only staying because of some unavoidable reason. No one seemed to really want to be there, there was always a mother or daughter or fish or some reason. The trip to Crete, however, was absolutely brutal! The winds were still pretty nasty, but we raised the mainsail to about half just to help with the bouncing around on the massive swells. On top of all of that, the motor started inexplicably revving down occasionally. The by word of the trip so far seems to be “catastrophe,” pronounced without the “-e”. It’s very Greek. The nice thing about all of that is that everyone on the boat ... read more

Saturday, October 23 A very slow morning this morning for me. I am having a hard time deciding whether I like this town or not. It is quite strange. Having my computer boot up around noon was a definite plus to my day, along with having Chris, again, inquire about laundry, which meant that it was all packed up immediately and hauled off to the poor wife of a very obliging man (who was not going to be doing the scrubbing himself) to be handwashed. Jesus. Having the computer up and running meant that we had access to all of the maps, weather forecasts, and town write ups we could possibly imagine (there is internet here too) so much of the afternoon was spent debating our course for tomorrow, as the winds are still too strong ... read more
