It has come to my attention that I have again, been neglecting my blog so here is hopefully a fairly accurate account of the last month. So I last blogged in Cuzco just before starting the Inca trail. The morning we left it was raining, which actually was not a bad thing as it meant that we had cooler weather to trek in. The first day was not too strenuous with a few up hill sections and we arrived into camp with our tents set up and a fantastic dinner prepared for us. Surprisingly, even though there are around 500 people on the trail each day, we did not encounter too many other trekkers. The second day was tougher as we climbed to 4200metres to tackle the dead woman's pass. It was a challenging but enjoyable ... read more

Sorry for not updating for a while. Since leaving Bonito we have packed in quite a lot. We first headed to Pantanal which is a big nature reserve. We spent two days there, sleeping in hammocks, and wildlife watching. They have a great bird population there and we came across more than a few toucans. We also saw many caimans, capybaras, otters, aardvarks and Mosquitos! We spent one morning piraña fishing and then ate them for our dinner. It is an extremely tasty fish but full of bones so there wasn't much meat. We also went horse riding and i was allowed a couple of canters which was fun. We then crossed the border into Bolivia and were instantly aware that we were in a poorer country. We took an over night train on a very ... read more

We have been travelling for just over a week now. Since my last update we returned to the mainland and visited a beautiful colonial town called Paraty. I really liked this town. It reminded me of Antigua in Guatemala with cobbled streets and colonial buildings but it had the advantage of being on the coast. We went out for an amazing Thai meal on the first night and though expensive, it was probably one of the best meals I have ever had- shrimps with asparagus! My favourite. The next day we went out on a "party" boat. We were fortunate to have great weather and we visited a number of beaches and could jump off the boat into the moderately warm, but crystal clear sea. Due to its party boat nature it did also involve some ... read more

Hi, Well I had amazing 5 weeks in the UK and now that wedding fever is over I am back out in South America hoping not to develop any other kind of fever! I arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday night and made it to my hostel despite the efforts of my accelerator foot heavy taxi driver. I had found a nice hostel and in the morning I got up and went for a run around the neighbourhood. I felt safe and my only annoyance was the heat! I spent the day visiting the central area of Rio and saw the Cathedral and an art museum. I then went to Santa Theresa which is a nice area with cobblestreets and arty types and nice cafes. My plan was to get the tram there but as ... read more

Hello! Well, I´m shattered but having an amazing time. Been here nearly 2 weeks now and have done so much. There are about 33 volunteer managers here at Raleigh Costa Rica and we are all getting on really well. Most people are aged between 24-30 and all have interesting lives and stories to share. Our field base is in a beautiful area at the base of another active volcano but apparently we would not be hit if it erupted... Living is basic but we are being fed well and have WIFI so I am pretty happy! We spent the first couple of days having training on how to use radios, teamwork and other things. Then we went trekking for a few days and spent one night camping and one night in hammocks in the jungle. Of ... read more

Hola from Costa Rica, It has been a lovely week here! I have been with Caroline this week and it has been lovely to spend time with a friend! We have had a week of pampering with high end hotels which has been such a treat. We arrived in San Jose and spent a day enjoying commercialism. I felt a bit shell shocked after Cuba. We went to have coffee, nice food and watched a movie. Costa Rica is a very well developed 3rd world country. It is also very expensive! We visited La Fortuna for 2 days which sits at the base of Volcano Arenal - another active volcano. We spent the first afternoon cooking in the hotsprings and drinking cocktails at $11 a go. It was very pleasant. The second day we went on ... read more

Hello, Sorry for the delay and this being brief ... Cuba was a very interesting country to visit. I was with a fantastic group of people and made friends from Oz and NZ who I hope to keep in touch with. We started in Havana, and headed East as far as Baracoa. The history was evident everywhere and we were able to visit many historical sites from the revolution. It was interesting to be in a communist country. There was no advertising other than government propaganda. No McDonalds and no Starbucks! The supermarket shelves were fairly empty and there was not much available to purchase. Internet was scarce and slow and it was actually quite expensive to be there as a tourist. They have two currencies and the Peso that the locals use allows their minute ... read more

Hello! Well it is my last night in the 2nd most dangerous country in the world! I am sad to leave. The people I have met have all been very welcoming. I have enjoyed the culture, the geougraphy of the country is amaxing and the food has been great! Despite the horrific statistics about Guatemala, if you avoid the main city and take some care you can enjoy a great country! I have achieved a lot in my 3 weeks. I can speak some basic spanish, twirl a lot on the dance floor and touch my toes! All in all a pretty succesful trip. As usual I am leaving with a big to do list so no doubt I will be back to visit in the not too distant future. I am excited to be moving ... read more

Hello Everyone, Feliz Navidad! Hope you have all had a great, relaxing Christmas. Last week I mostly filled my days with salsa, Spanish and yoga. At the weekend I visited Lago Atitlan. The original plan was with one other friend but we ended up a group of 5! We stayed in an Eco Hotel called Isla Verde. It was beautiful. Amazing gardens and a great view of the lake and volcanoes. We had a very relaxing weekend and enjoyed fab food at the hotel. It was so fantastic that 2 of my friends stayed to volunteer there. I am a little envious! I returned to Antigua last night. It is nice to be back though it seems very hectic after the lake. There is a new woman in the house who is American and in her ... read more

Hello, I just wrote all this and the computer crashed so fingers crossed it doesn't this time. The first week has flown by with Spanish School and seeing the city. I have spent most of my mornings exploring and studying and all my afternoons occupied by Spanish School. The Spanish is going well but everything I can say is in the present tense which is limiting somewhat. It is nice to have Tyler, the American, in the house as I can pick up on his and Tina's conversations though I may just be getting better at reading hand gestures. I have started attending Yoga classes in the mornings which are painful but relaxing. They take place in a very swanky hotel. I am also having private Salsa lessons. My teacher, Nancy, informs me that she is ... read more
