It is no wonder they respect the elderly in China - they're still game to have a try. I saw a marvellous sight this morning - a wee old dear wearing a thick, curly black wig, her white hair slipping out the front and back of the hair piece. I should explain, Shanghai Maggie Hostel has an unusual set-up whereby they have premises on the 1st and 4th floors, and the remaining floors function as an elderly residents home. It basically combines young, funky backpackers holding a map to The Bund, with elderly, slipper-shuffling Chinese holding an empty milk carton. And despite seeing a flow of foreigners daily, they still gawp. An even grander sight was to be seen on Nanjing Lu this afternoon. This chap must have been 93 - two teeth and liver spots,
